BadIsland written by Doug TenNaPel was a great read. I really enjoyed the book because of the character arc, unpredictable plot, and themes. The story was about a family of four that went on a trip to this sketchy island which started off as a bad vacation; however, it ended off as a frantic adventure for the family. Reese who was the son in the family played as the main character. From the beginning to the end of the story, Reese made a significant change to himself from being an immature teenager to becoming a brave and mature young man. For example, when the family arrived on the island Reese was very afraid of the environment and creatures on the island, but after their many encounters with the scary creatures, he gained confidence in himself and bravery to fight off the monsters and save his family. His father Lyle and mother Karen were always great parents to their two children Reese and his younger daughter Janie, but Lyle and Karen had lack of trust and confidence in his son to being a responsible and mature teenager. The parents’ lack of trust and confidence in Reese began to change when Reese was fighting off the giant creatures and got more impressed in him when Reese rescued his parents from the monsters’ capture. It was very surprising how such little bravery and confidence of the teenage boy was able to save his family from being killed and fought against the creatures about five times his size. The major changes made by Reese were also unexpected because of how immature and selfish he was. I was in favour of his change such that he became willing to spend more time with his family.
