Badminton officiating log.

This piece of coursework will display 8 weeks of participation in badminton officiating through training sessions and tournaments. It also will display the badminton official’s award itself and the requirements of earning the achievement such as signalling systems and scoring.

The Young Officials Award. I completed the course on the 6th of November 2014 at The Henry Box School with the help of Jane Parkinson. The course went over a 4 hour period. We learnt the theory of badminton and practised skills on court through officiating and playing. After the course we had good enough knowledge to officiate for ourselves in tournaments and competitions. Before however we had to display the skills of all roles such as line judge, shuttle controller and scorer. I displayed my skills as a scorer and shuttle controller at a training session at Wood Green School as part of my Sports Leader programme. I later received my certificate from the Youth Sport Trust.

Week 1.
Date- Friday the 7th of November 2014
Facility- The Wood Green School
Event- year 10 and 11 training session
Officiating role- scorer and shuttle cock controller.
Analysis- despite being nervous as I had to teach the Sports Leader Group how to officiate on all roles I enjoyed the experience.
Improvements- be more confident and to the point when announcing as there were questions on what was happening.

Week 2
Date- Tuesday 11th of November
Facility- The Wood Green School
Event- U16 West Oxfordshire tournament
Officiating role- scorer
Analysis- the standard was quite high and made me nervous as it was only my second time outside of the course. Was good practise for competitive events.
Improvements- watch for service faults and not get caught up on scoring.

Week 3
Date- Friday 21st of November
Facility- The Wood Green School
Event- year 10 and 11 badminton training
Officiating role- line judge
Analysis- this was my first time outside of the training course being a line judge so it was fun to use the skills learnt
Improvements- revise signals as I was sometimes not confident on what I was displaying

Week 4
Date- Tuesday the 25th of November
Facility- The Wood Green School
Event- West Oxfordshire Schools U14
Officiating role- scorer
Analysis- this was an event of lower standard in comparison to tournaments so I had to display effective knowledge and explain decisions.
Improvements- be loud when giving judgements

Week 5
Date- Friday the 5th of December
Facility- The Wood Green School
Event- year 10 and 11 badminton training
Officiating role- scorer
Analysis- was good practise but the standard was low as some messed around, I therefore had to be more confident to keep them in order.
Improvements- look for service faults

Week 6
Date-Tuesday 9th of December
Facility- The Henry Box School
Event- year 11 pe lesson
Officiating role- predominately scorer
Analysis- good practise but was of low standard due to no competition so I did not get to display much skills and often was instead coaching.
Improvements- be louder when giving service faults as some ignore and carry on the play

Week 7
Date- Tuesday 16th of December
Facility- The Henry Box School
Event- year 11 PE lesson
Officiating role- scorer
Analysis- overall an enjoyable experience as I was able to officiate the top performers and got to use the skills I have learnt, overall built my confidence
Improvements- more decisive judgements quicker to keep the fault in relevance

Week 8
Date-Monday 26th of January
Facility- Bartholomew School
Event- U12
Officiating role- line judge
Analysis- good practise getting back into officiating and the signals after the school break, much more confident despite this in comparison to when I first began.
Improvements- be quicker to respond

Analysis of three formal competitive matches

Match one
Date- Tuesday the 11th of November
Location- The Wood Green School
Event- U16 West Oxfordshire Tournament
Match- The Henry Box School vs Chipping Norton (girls doubles)
Officiating role- scorer
Score-11-7
Analysis of personal performance
One of the players play regularly at a high standard however the other performers were not regular competitors and so were not to the standard. Despite this the pace was fast ad both displayed relatively good skill. This was my second week of officiating and my first experience of competitive matches and therefore I struggled to keep control of the match as the high standard performer often contested so I gave often had to argue my point and other performers became lost. However after a few disputes I kept control of the game and dealt with decisions swiftly to keep the game moving.
Possible improvements
Do not get distracted with the pace nor the score so decisions can be noticed rather than pointed out.
Pre match protocols
Announced the sides playing and where the court was, upon arrival displayed the shuttle cock being used and decided who was starting. Paper work was dealt with well before the previous match so there was no rush.
Post-match protocols
Completed necessary sheets and confirmed the score. Cleared the court of shuttle cocks and handed sheets in to be recorded.

Match 2
Date- Tuesday the 25th of November
Location- Bartholomew School

Match- The Henry Box School vs Burford (boys singles)
Officiating role- scorer
Score- 12-10
Analysis of personal performance
With more experience as a scorer I was much more confident with decisions and calling upon peoples actions. I was also making independent decisions as I did not have line judges and was therefore fully in control.
Possible improvements be more clear and vocal on decisions as some did not understand what was going on for example why they had to win by 2 clear points.

Analysis of personal performance
The final game of the day I was eager to get done but did not affect my performance as I kept a standard of equality and just decisions with no messes of the scoring. The play was not interrupted despite parents becoming too competitive of which I had to silence.
Possible improvements
I should have been more firm with the position of spectators as sometimes they were off-putting towards the players and disturbed play occasionally
Pre match protocols
Removed stray shuttlecocks tightened the net and decided the shuttles used in the match with a surplus to ensure swift play. Removed players who were not competing to a safe distance during the previous match.
Post-match protocol
Cleared the courts dismantling nets and clearing hall of shuttle cocks.

Health and safety audit

The agility required in badminton sch as jumping and landing in different positions to be able to move around the court can lead to injury. In addition sometimes muscles canbe overused such as in the arm while being used in the hitting motion
Like all sports injuries can be avoided through thorough stretches in the warm up. The warm up should include cardiovascular intensity raises such as jogging and running followed by static stretches to reduce potential risk of pulling muscles.
The court should be cleared before the match to ensure all hazards are removed and cannot endanger the performer. Suitable lighting is required and suitable areas outside the pitch for spectators and players to move around in.
Only rackets that are legal can be used as ones that are too heavy or strung tightly can generate too much power. Shuttles should never be aimed directly at the opponent as they can lead to injuries.
The players shoes must be supportive and comfortable to protect the ankle from twists that are common in the sport. For eye protection goggles can be worn and gloves can protect the hands from blistering.
Facilities
* Courts should have appropriate areas around to allow spectators and players to not be hit. * Lighting should be suitable and not blind the players * There should be no holes or tears in the net * Posts should be fitted carefully and across the centre of the court
Risk assesments must always be carried out by the officials prior to any games to minimise risk. Officials should keep an eye on gameplay to ensure that the same level of safety is maintained. Any risks should be recorded for future reference.

Child protection and The Official

In response to the governments Every Child Matters strategy, I have a responsibility (under the supervision of my club or school) to safeguard and protect children and young people in sport. The following points outline key practises to ensure child protection. * Always work in an open environment, avoiding situations when you are alone with young people or cannot be observed * Treat all your charges equally and with respect and dignity * Make sporting activities fair, fun and enjoyable and promote fair play in competition * Be an excellent role model- eg never swear smoke or drink alcohol in the company of young people * Give enthusiastic and constructive feedback rather than negative feedback

conclusion overall I believe my officiating log has been a success. It required a lot of on and off court work in things such as revising over rules and hand signals, preparing tournaments and taking notes on performances. I have now completed my Young Officials Award and feel comfortable in all roles on the court. However my weakest point was giving confidence with my decisions and if I were to repeat the log I would space out my logs to display bigger improvements due to the bigger time gap.

Scoring system The rules of badminton states that a badminton match shall consist of the best of 3 games. In doubles and men's singles, the first side to score 15 points wins the game. In women's singles, the first side to score 11 points wins the game. If the score becomes 14-all (10-all in women's singles), the side which first scored 14 (10) shall exercise the choice to continue the game to 15 (11) points or to 'set' the game to 17 (13) points. The side winning a game serves first in the next game. Only the serving side can add a point to its score.
