...Case 37 – Baker Adhesives Background/Facts This case is about Baker Adhesives which is a small company that manufactures specialty adhesives in Newark, NJ. The setting is June of 2006. Baker Adhesives was a modest company founded by Doug Baker’s father who was a chemist and believed in flexible production systems. Baker Adhesives had recently forayed into international markets with a sale to Novo, a Brazilian toy manufacturer. Alissa Moreno was a sales manager and needed to meet with Doug to discuss the recent results. Going into the meeting Doug is excited at the prospects of finding new markets. As U.S. manufacturing continues to migrate overseas, he is under intense pressure to find new markets. This recent sale to Novo had been a financial boost to Baker Adhesives. The company was able to easily meet the order and in fact it freed up some raw material the company had in inventory. The purpose of the meeting was to finalize details on a new order from Novo that was to be 50% larger than the original order. When the meeting started, Moreno hit Baker with the bad news immediately. The problem was that since Novo order was denominated in Brazilian, the payment from Novo had to be converted into U.S. dollars at the current exchange rate. Exchange rates had changed since the time Baker Adhesives and Novo had agreed on a price, the value of the payment was now substantially lower than anticipated. This was going to hurt profit. So obviously Baker was concerned...

...UV0738 BAKER ADHESIVES In early June of 2006, Doug Baker met with his sales manager Alissa Moreno to discuss the results of a recent foray into international markets. This was new territory for Baker Adhesives, a small company manufacturing specialty adhesives. Until a recent sale to Novo, a Brazilian toy manufacturer, all of Baker Adhesives’ sales had been to companies not far from its Newark, New Jersey, manufacturing facility. However, as U.S. manufacturing continued to migrate overseas, Baker would be under intense pressure to find new markets, which would inevitably lead to international sales. Doug Baker was looking forward to this meeting. The recent sale to Novo, while modest in size at 1,210 gallons, had been a significant financial boost to Baker Adhesives. The order had used up some raw-materials inventory that Baker had considered reselling at a loss a few months before the Novo order. Furthermore, the company had been running well under capacity and the order was easily accommodated within the production schedule. The purpose of the meeting was to finalize details on a new order from Novo that was to be 50% larger than the original order. Also, payment for the earlier Novo order had just been received and Baker was looking forward to paying down some of the balance on the firm’s line of credit. As Baker sat down with Moreno, he could tell immediately that he was in for bad news. It came quickly. Moreno pointed out that since the Novo order was denominated in Brazilian...

...Case #37 Baker Adhesives Synopsis and Objectives Baker Adhesives (Baker) has just made its first foray into international sales and must come to grips with the impact of exchange-rate changes on the profitability of a past order. The company must also formulate a strategy for dealing with exchange-rate risks for future orders. The case is intended as an introduction to exchange-rate risk and the management of that risk. Upon receipt of payment from a past order, the firm realizes that exchange-rate movements have reduced the value of the sale. A follow-on order provides the context for exploring possible mechanisms for managing that risk. In particular, sufficient direction and information is provided to examine both a forward hedge and a money-market hedge. The learning objectives of the case are as follows: * To explore the magnitude and effect of exchange-rate risks. * To illustrate exchange-rate risk management through two conventional hedges—a forward-contract hedge and a money-market hedge. * To demonstrate market parity and identify how preferences arise from unique company characteristics. * To explore issues related to pricing of international bids. Suggested Questions 1. How profitable is the original sale to Novo once the exchange-rate changes are acknowledged? How might the exchange-rate risk, which affected the value of the order, have been managed? 2. Assuming Baker agrees to the new Novo sale, determine the present value...

...Wearing Quick Weaves versus Sew-ins Today women are more likely to be wearing not just the latest fashion, but also weave. There are many styles and methods when it comes to applying weaves. All techniques of weaves styles have different procedures; some may seem more difficult to apply than others. The two most popular techniques are quick weaves and sew-ins. Quick weaves and sew-ins differ in technique, care and cost. A quick weave is a method of installing hair extensions to hair without leaving out any natural hair. The hair extensions are attached to the natural hair by either adding gel to the natural hair to lay it down or by braiding the natural hair down to the scalp and then gluing the hair extensions down on top of that. With this method a person do not have to worry about choosing a color to match the natural hair, or about blending the hair extensions in with the natural hair. This method also gives a very flat and non bulky look to the hair extensions. A Quick Weave can last up to 4 weeks with proper maintenance. It could last longer but the natural hair needs to be washed and deep conditioned every month, especially when wearing braids or hair extensions regularly. To maintain a Quick Weave style a person should never put any oil based product onto the extension hair, for straight styles a person should wrap the hair every night and tie it up with a satin bonnet or satin scarf, for curly styles a person should apply light mouse and roller set to the hair overnight...

...My family is in the process of re-opening a small business to the north of Atlanta, Georgia call The Cake Shoppe (bakery). We are in the middle of a complete re-model, and this section has been very enlightening for me as I assist them. I found that one of the most important concepts for The Cake Shoppe, especially during this remodel, is technological forces (pg 67), which is defined as “inventions or innovations from applied science or engineering research” (Kern, Hartley, & Rudelius, 2012, pg 67). The previous owners did not use social media or advertise at all, so the new branding of our new products and lines, social media networking and electronic commerce, which is “any activity that uses some form of electronic communiciation in the inventory, exchange, advertisement, distribution, and payment of goods” (Kern, Hartley, & Rudelius, 2012), will be extremely important. We are in the process of re-vamping our logos to make them more appealing for the website, creating social media accounts for the bakery, and even producing online advertising via social networking, online giveaways, and e-mail coupons. Utilizing online savings websites like Groupon and Living Social to promote our business has boosted sales tremendously. Another very important concept is competitive forces (pg 68). Competition is “alternative firms that could provide a product to satisfy a specific market’s needs” (Kern, Hartley, & Rudelius, 2012, pg 68). I believe that attracting customers is...

...DIETER’S DELECTABLES Ltd. For many years, Mr. Dieter Bachembesser served as pastry chef at several of Toronto’s finest hotels, earning a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable people in the field of fine baking. In 1993, he used this knowledge to start Dieter’s Delicacies, a small firm that that sold fine baked goods to several of the area’s finest caterers. These products were made according to Dieter’s own specifications by Browne’s Bakery, a reputable producer of baked goods. While Dieter’s Delicacies was only a small part-time venture, it was financially successful, and Dieter’s reputation spread. In 1999, Dieter decided to quit working for hotels and to start his own business, Dieter’s Delectables Ltd., with himself as president and general manager. This new company operated in a similar manner to Dieter’s Delicacies, in that it did not produce goods, but rather operated in the distribution and wholesale business. Dieter’s purchased its entire product line from Browne’s Bakery, with whom Dieter had established a very satisfactory working relationship, and distributed and resold these to a variety of retail outlets under the company’s own private label brand of Dieter’s Delicacies. In its first year of operation, Dieter’s Delectables’ sales were $150,000. As its reputation for quality and customer service spread, sales grew rapidly, in large part due to Dieter’s knowledge and his personal selling efforts, as well as effective merchandising techniques. In 2002...

...Since I have nothing to relate to this book, the experience I had while reading this book was incredible. While reading the book, I gained knowledge that can be used for a lifetime. The novel made me stop and think about my attitude and the impact it has on others. Jay Asher is a fabulous writer that explains reality in a convincing way. He uses such precise detail that I often connect with the situations included. I finished this novel in 4 days, meaning that it was almost impossible to set it down, alongside all of the things I have. The setting, plot, and characters were phenomenal. Although this book was breathtaking, I was disappointed to see that Hannah Bakers parents were not involved. I was left questioned at whether her parents were able to bear the grief and sadness. The marvelous novel of Thirteen Reasons Why is written by Jay Asher. They say dead girls don’t talk, but that’s where they’re wrong. They talk, but most people are too scared to listen. Hannah’s dead. Two weeks after Hannah Baker’s death, Clay Jensen hears her voice one last time-on a “Baker’s dozen” of cassette tapes she made. Seven double side tapes with thirteen stories of thirteen people-thirteen people who killed her. Clay was mailed Hannah’s obscure suicide note because he's one of the reasons that she died. That she killed herself, one of the reasons she gave up. On the tapes she explained that her death started with a rumor and the reputation the rumor gave her, highlighting the connections...
