MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD

SUBJECT: Standard Operating Procedure for 2/7 IN Battalion Aid Station

1. References

2. Purpose
a. To establish and outline a Standard Operating Procedure for 2/7 IN Battalion Aid Station based off of the above references.
3. Scope
a. The requirements herein are applicable to all personnel within the Battalion who work in or utilize the services of the Battalion Aid Station.
4. Policy
a. Medical care is characterized by the ever present need for continuing education. All medics must be familiar with a wide range of medical references and participate in medical training whenever possible. To aid the BAS in patient screening, the triage process will be utilized to determine who will return to duty and who needs further care.
b. The primary function of the BAS in garrison is to provide the Soldier with appropriate level one medical care at the Battalion echelon. The primary source of follow on care will be provided by the Troop Medical Clinic, while in garrison. The BAS will act in conjunction with the TMC by screening patients, and treating minor injuries only sending Soldiers to further care when it is beyond the medic’s capabilities. Under no circumstances should a medic extend themselves beyond their limitations.

c. To assist in the establishment, assistance, maintenance, and standardization of policy within the BAS, this SOP is developed to ensure and maintain a uniform system of care delivery and procedures throughout 2/7 Infantry’s Medical Platoon.

5. Responsibilities
a. Maintain medical and dental readiness - One of the most important missions of the BAS while in garrison is to keep the unit medically and dentally prepared to deploy. Aid Stations use a web based data tracking system known as the Medical Protection System (MEDPROS). Because it is web based, immunization information for Soldiers can be transferred electronically when they check-in to a new unit. This system provides an overall readiness snapshot of the unit.
b. Conduct sick call – The aid station will act as the primary medical treatment facility for Soldiers in this unit. Sick call will normally be conducted under the direction of the PA and the treatment NCO. Responsibilities of the medics conducting sick call include identifying the chief complaint and performing a routine patient assessment to include vital signs. You may be expected to present the patient to the PA to complete the assessment and develop the treatment plan. It is also the responsibility of the sick call medics to complete much of the official documentation.
c. Trauma Care – The aid station will remain open the length of the duty day IOT provide emergency care for injuries threatening life, limb, or eyesight. Medics will act as first responders until patient can be transported to the emergency room.

6. Sick Call Procedures
a. Check in – Sick call will be conducted Monday-Friday from 0530-UTC(except on federal and training holidays). Patients will sign in and must provide a sick call slip (DA form 638).
b. Patient encounter – Vitals and patient screening documented using the SOAP Note fashion (Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan) on an SF600. You may be expected to complete and document the first half of the note before presenting the patient to the PA, if needed, at which time the assessment will be made and a treatment plan will be developed.
c. Discharge - Basic treatments that can be performed at the BAS will be accomplished as required then the patient will be returned to duty. Routine medications that are stocked in the BAS will be dispensed as needed. The patient is given instructions on the remainder of the plan of care and when they should report back for any follow ups.
d. Sign-in List - Each morning a sign-in roster (Report of the Sick and Injured) is documented detailing individuals who had been seen that day and their chief complaint. It also lists the disposition of the Soldier following treatment.

7. Administration
a. Aid Stations are the focal point of all medical administrative matters for the unit. These include everything from simple limited duty profiles to tracking Medical Examination Boards (MEB).
8. Supply
a. Aid Stations in garrison have limited amounts of consumable supplies. Unit funds are used to provide office supplies and medical supplies needed to provide basic care for unit personnel. Battalion medical supplies (Class VIII) are ordered utilizing DCAM (Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support Customer Assistance Module) through the Brigade Medical Supply Office.
b. The aid station will also restock Combat Life Saver bags and Individual First Aid Kits IOT provides Soldiers with the ability to perform self-aid and buddy-aid when necessary. Medics will not always be available to treat every injury and each Soldier needs to be able to provide basic care in emergency situations until a medic arrives or EMS personnel respond.
9. Medical Coverage
a. Whenever Soldiers train, they will need medical support. Examples of events requiring medical coverage include weapons ranges, obstacle courses, and land navigation. Each line company will be assigned medics who will fall under their operational control. This will allow them to complete their mission with the necessary force health protection.
b. Medics will be versed in patient stabilization and evacuation in the case of an emergency. Some injuries, such as minor heat injuries, can be treated at the BAS. Others may require emergency services. Medical treatment extent and location will be determined on a case by case basis.
10. Self/Buddy Aid Training
a. Medical training will be administered to non-medical personnel to enhance self/buddy aid and litter team responsibilities. Programs such as Combat Life Saver are taught while in garrison. These thorough training programs for Soldiers, to include sustainment training, will save lives on the battlefield and in peacetime emergency situations.
11. Essentials of BAS
a. To prevent the loss of life, limb, or eyesight and provide basic medical care to the Soldiers assigned to 2/7 IN. To train Soldiers in injury prevention and awareness in an effort to conserve the Battalion’s fighting strength at its highest possible level.
