Bass had given his students an exam and at the end asked them to identify any test items that had been graded incorrectly by the Scantron machine and submit it to the teaching assistant. After this Bass suspected that some had changed their answers. So, for the next exam, Bass made a copy of the students’ exams and asked them to do the same thing for identifying incorrect answers. After comparison of the copy and the resubmission it was discovered that some had changed their answers. Jack brought the situation to the dean and this resulted in those students withdrawing from the course and receiving sanction letter on their academic file. All the cheaters agreed to this accept one, D.R. Street III. His argument was that he misunderstood the directions and that he should be allowed to withdraw without a sanction letter. When the dean said no he had his father talk with the chancellor and ultimately he was allowed to withdraw without the sanction letter. Entrapment Jack Bass did not entrap his students by withholding the Scantron information from them. Cheating is a serious offence at any academic institution. Yin (1984) defines case study as research method as an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context; when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident; and in which multiple sources of evidence are used (p. 23). It presents details on a bounded event or participant experiencing the event. Case study has its roots in anthropology, sociology, and psychology, but gained legitimacy as a valid methodology for use in other fields of study in the 1980’s. It is useful in close examination of existing phenomena of which in-depth study has not been done, or has un-explored areas. While case studies do fall within the category of qualitative research, they are used when attention to a specific subject, or participant will garnered information about a phenomena or experience that a wide study can not provide. ...Case Study This is a case study of Memorial Health System’s CPOE implementation. There are several factors that contributed to the implementation’s failure. We will discuss them here, and what could have been done instead to help the project succeed instead of fail. Lack of Belief in the Project Members of the organization do not see the need for change, and are resistant to it. They feel the project is more of a hassle than a help, and will cause them problems (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2009). Indicator/Root Cause In this case study, several physicians’ were opposed to switching to a CPOE system. They were not convinced of the need for the CPOE implementation and resisted to the change. Eventually some of the prominent physicians’ left the organization for an organization that does not use CPOE. The root cause in the lack of belief in the project is that these physicians did not have confidence that it would help them. Also the CIO did not help any by making the physicians’ feel at ease or explain to them why and how the CPOE would help them. Solution An easy solution would be for the CIO to hold one meeting for everyone and explain the pros versus cons. Allow for everyone to air his or her frustrations, and address each one. This was not addressed initially and could have saved a lot of hassle and uncertainty from the organization’s employees. The data for the case were collected using naturalistic inquiry and multiple methods including structured and unstructured interviews, review of documents, observation of meetings and casual interaction facilitated by frequent visits over a ten-month period. The case revolves around the hospital administrators' attempts to deal with what they termed a "disastrous deficit" and the most serious financial situation in the hospital's history. Strategies for dealing with the funding agency and board of directors included the management of meaning and communications about the term "deficit."
