...10B 22 August 2014 The Struggles of Undocumented Students What is the dream of an Undocumented Student? The dream of an undocumented student is to pursue the American Dream of becoming someone professional and having the opportunity to help their family back in their country. What are the reasons that the government does not want undocumented students to continue pursuing an education after they graduate from High School? The government does not focus on what undocumented students dream of becoming in the future. What they do focus on are the jobs they are taking from our country. Undocumented students are being denied the privilege of attending college because they are unaware of their rights to attend college. Every year, there are many undocumented students from different countries migrating to the United States. They migrate from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala in search for a better life. However, once they arrive to the United States they are faced with many obstacles that they did not know existed. Many undocumented students graduate from high schools, but only a few get the opportunity to pursue the American Dream because they do not have the right documentations. I believe the government should give undocumented student a visa in order for them to pursue their dreams. Chicanos and Latinos students are being affected by this situation because most of them end up going back to their countries. Other students end up working in low wage jobs for example, in restaurants...

...personal responsibility is the key not only to college success, but in life as well. As an adult, I reflect back to the teachings of my childhood. I was taught not only personal responsibility, but also how to plan ahead, make conscious-ethical decisions, and manage my time wisely. One of the most important ways to accomplish success, whether it be college or personal, is managing time effectively. Once it is gone, there is no way to get more, there is no reset button and you cannot turn the clocks back. As a student and mother, I think about the endless possibilities of college success and make rational decisions to achieve my goals. The time and effort I contribute to my responsibilities and priorities will determine success. Therefore, I approach time and responsibilities as if I am in control. “Too many students are showing up on campus under-prepared for college; in fact, with scarcely any idea why they are there in the first place” (Long, J. 2010). Instead, most students are more overwhelmed with organizing their dorm rooms, pledging for a sorority or fraternity, and going to parties. For these students, college is a culture shock and it becomes more about fitting in and being known rather than about education, attending classes and maintaining good grades. “And, for most of them, four years later they are handed a diploma, perhaps only barely more educated than when they first unpacked” (Long, J. 2010). From experience, college is easier when you are...

Becoming a college student is not about just getting good grades; it is about having a positive mindset, which will help the student become more successful, despite his or her grades. Personal Responsibility Even though students with low levels of personal responsibility also graduate, personal responsibility is critical for a successful college career because students who display a high level of personal responsibility have higher GPAs and students with high levels of personal responsibility graduate at a higher rate. Therefore, high level of personal responsibility will equal a high GPA and high level of success. There are certain factors that can not be overcome, such as having a disability or not having access to a school system.
