...When you hear our first amendment what do you think? Is it freedom of speech? Freedom of religion? Freedom of press, assembly and petition? Do do you think of the millions abusing this amendment day by day? Or actually trying to persuade, inform, entertain and amuse your audience? On April 26, 1983, Matthew Fraser, a high school senior at Bethel High school, gave a speech nominating classmate Jeff Kuhlman for his schools class vice president. The speech was filled with sexual innuendoes prompting disciplinary action from the administration. All though Matthew Fraser thought he was simply helping a friend out, There was much wrong with his profound speech. Does the 1st amendment prevent a school district from disciplining a high school student for giving a lewd speech at an assembly? According to ABC-CLIO When taken to court, the court upheld the school district by a 7-2 margin that officials acted within constitution. With that, Fraser was suspended for three days and his name was removed from the ballet to be selected as one of three to give a speech at graduation. Even though Fraser and family thought it was unfair, Chief Justice Burger delivered the opinion of the court and proved that he had in fact violated and abused the first amendment. While Fraser was giving his speech, school councilor observed the gestures and reactions the many peers of Fraser’s who attended. Some were hooting and cheering on his obscene speech, while many others were very...

...In the essay “On Paradise” Nicolette Bethel starts off by discussing reality based on perspective. To illustrate this Bethel uses two examples. The first example is the image of a beach seen through the eyes of two people; a tourist and a resident. From the tourist’s perspective the beach is a beautiful, warm place where he can lay around and get a sun tan, enjoy the warm air and clear skies; however, from the resident’s perspective it’s a harsh, hot desert like environment that he must escape. The second example is the view of providing hospitality to a guest. In one scenario the guest is welcomed by the host, given the best by the host and the host actively and willingly engages the guest. In the next scenario the host views the guest as an inconvenience, doesn’t care to interact and can’t wait for the guest to leave. The essay further goes on to describe how The Bahamas is marketed as a “paradise” and how Bahamians didn’t create this idea. In fact, they don’t believe this sells pitch. According to Bethel this is because Bahamians have to deal with the everyday realities and truths that come with being a resident of The Bahamas. For example, the magnificent sunshine that can damage crops, the beautiful seas that can become turquoise graves and the warm white sand on the beaches that can get stuck in our shoes and irritate us (152). Bethel states that marketing The Bahamas as a “paradise” is a wonderful advertising tactic to get tourist to visit; however, she is leery of what...

...I can honestly say that I feel like I use my strengths every day. Before I started college at Bethel, though, that was not the case. I loved writing in high school and my first years of college. I enjoyed research, reading, and writing papers that presented an argument and moved the reader. At my current position, the only writing I get to do every day is in the form of short emails. I utilize strengths other than writing while at work, such as planning, prioritizing, teaching and developing my team. Bethel has been the missing piece that has pulled all of my strengths together to a point where I feel they are being utilized, and not wasted, on a daily basis. Reading some of the other posts in this section, I cannot imagine how frustrating...

...won't pretend I'm familiar with other online university programs, and what they offer, because Bethel was my first choice. However, in the small amount of time I've been "attending" Bethel, I can't imagine how other online universities can compare. When you think about an "online university", you think about all of those commercials you see on television, for colleges you've never even heard of, that have no real campus. You imagine the students sitting at home alone, turning in assignments to their "teachers", whom they will probably never meet. That doesn't seem like college to me. With Bethel, so far I have met not only numerous members of the faculty and staff, but also my classmates! My actual classmates, that I'll be embarking on this journey with. Bethel is also a "real college" to me. I have friends that live on the main campus in McKenzie, TN, and attend class almost every day! It's not just some "online university" that no one has ever seen/heard of....

...four cases are Tinker v. Des Moines, Bethel v. Fraser, Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, and Morse v. Frederick. Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District was the first case of freedom of speech for students. This case took place in 1969 in Des Moines, Iowa. John F. Tinker and his siblings and friends decided to wear black armbands to school in order to protest the Vietnam War. The principals and other parents and students were not fond of this gesture because they thought it was disrespectful to the people who were serving in the war. The principals of the school heard about this before it occurred and decided to make a policy that stated that any student that wore these black armbands would face consequences. These consequences included taking off the armband and being suspended until the student agreed to not wear the armband anymore. The children wore the armbands to school and were suspended. The Tinker family decided to take this to court. This case went all the way to the Supreme Court where they ruled in the favor of Tinker. The case law that resulted from this case stated that schools could only suspend speech if: 1) the speech causes problems or disrupts the educational process; 2) the speech has caused problems in the past; 3) the speech violates the constitutional rights of another student. This case decision has been the foundation for the other cases that occur. The second case of student speech is Bethel...

...What is freedom? Freedom is the ability to act, think or speak freely without limitation. The United States of America is notorious for being founded on the basis of freedom and democracy. Freedom is an amazing thing to have but there are times where it is used excessively causing harm around us. It is wonderful to be able to express opinions but there should be a limit as to what we should say to others or in public. John Stuart Mill argues that the government must never censor its citizens, no matter their opinion and that is agreeable to certain extent. The Bill of Rights is one of the nations essential founding documents added to the constitution in 1791. The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments to the constitution that limit the power of the United Stated federal government and itemizes fundamental rights and liberties provided to the people. The Founding fathers wanted to create a strong national government in which its citizens were able to have a voice in what goes on in the government. Though the constitution had already certain rights protected for the citizens many argued that those amendments weren’t enough for many citizens. Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers was pressuring the government to pass the bill of rights. “ A bill of rights he insisted is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth, general or particular and what no just government should refuse” (Bessette and Pitney p.57). In other words, Jefferson wanted the...

... Andrew Madison attends Street Law High School (SLHS). He was caught on school property by a police; he was smoking and had a weapon that was supposedly used to give Officer Bates and him a cut. Officer Bates has now charged him with assaulting an officer, assault and battery, and disorderly conduct. These are violations of DJ Codes. Andrew Madison is not guilty for these charges, because he did not do anything that was not protected by the amendments. On Wednesday, November 27, 2002, SLHS had minimum day for the approaching Thanksgiving holiday. Many students of SLHS were hanging around the building of the school and surrounding sidewalks, due to the pageant held. A few officers were patrolling their area in their car, when they noticed Andrew Madison and James/Jamie Lincoln close to SLHS on the corner of Equality Street and Hope Avenue, snacking on chips, talking loudly with each other, and Andrew was smoking cigarettes. Two officers, Officer Bates and Major came back and realized they were having a very loud conversation with a group of kids, so they suspiciously approached them. The officers asked their names and what they were doing on the corner of those streets, but they did not choose to answer. Madison and Lincoln moved towards their pockets and Officer Bates realized something shiny in Madison’s right hand, so he attempted to take it from him. The fight that went on between them resulted Madison getting a cut on his thigh, that was allegedly from his pocket knife...

...Bible Dictionary Project Template Name: Adrienne Hunt Student ID: L26294479 Course: BIBL 104-B16 Date: 6/15/15 Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Genesis Genesis, the beginning, tells the story of the beginning of life coming to be. Hence, why the first verse is, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” I believe, that one line set the mood for the rest of the book of Genesis. It is said to be written sometime between 1450-1410 B.C. to the people of Isreal to record God’s creation of the world and His desire to have people set apart to worship Him. Moses, the writer, starts off with the creation (God working for six days and the resting on the seventh day after the creation of the heavens and earth, along with man and woman), then leads to the fall (the first sin – Adam and Eve), flood (God called Noah to build an ark, so God could restore creation by a flood), and then the formation of the new nations (confusion of languages). To really grasp the reading of Genesis, one must understand that the text centers on God’s promises. The major events are the creation of life (heavens, earth, man, and woman), temptation, sin, first murder, flood, and life after. The main personalities in Genesis are: God, Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, Noah, Abram (Abraham), and so on. Abraham Abraham, or Abram, lived from about 2166 – 1991 B.C., as they say. Abraham was young when God called him for an assignment. He was faithful and did as he was told. His...

...Richard Allen was a regular man whose contributions greatly impacted American society. A self educated man, he was not a visionary nor did he enter this world privileged. Rather he was a man who knew what he believed and stood by those beliefs no matter what the consequences. He was an exemplary man by any standard, and influential for both black and white Americans both in his day and for years to come. BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Richard Allen was born into slavery on February 14, 1760, in Philadelphia. Not much is known of his childhood, including the names and birthdates of his parents and siblings. However his father is said to have been of pure African descent while his mother was of mixed blood. At the time of Richard’s birth he and his family were owned by prominent local lawyer Benjamin Chew. However, poor economic conditions and increasing competition from younger lawyers brought about a decline in Chew’s law practice by the latter part of the decade. In order to prevent public embarrassment to his family he was forced to sell six members of the Allen family; father, mother, and four children including young Richard. The Allen family was sold as a unit which was untypical in those days, as families were usually broken apart and sold off as individuals. The new owner of the Allen family was a man named Stokeley Sturgis who farmed in Kent County near Dover, Delaware. Eventually Stokeley also ran into economic difficulties and sold Allen's parents and three of his younger siblings...

...Strategic Planning Concepts 1 Running head: STRATEGIC PLANNING CONCEPTS Strategic Planning Concepts STAN R. KEY Bethel University Kathy Vest MOD 440 Strategic Planning 6/23/2011 Strategic Planning Concepts 2 Strategic Planning Concepts Organizations from all over the world have one thing in common: competition. In order for organizations to compete in today’s marketplace they have to have a plan of action or strategy. Strategic planning refers to a process which defines an organization’s plan to effectively allocate its available resources (Strategic Planning Performance, 2011). A strategic plan is not the same as a business plan. A business plan tells how and why the company’s products or services will garner revenues. A strategic plan identifies the objectives, goals, direction, and opportunities within an organization and how to go about executing them. Different Forms of Planning A strategic plan must be realistic, attainable, feasible, and flexible. A company’s strategy is the game plan management is using to stake out a market position, conduct its operations, attract and please customers, compete successfully, and achieve organizational objectives (Bethel College, 2005). Having a competitive advantage in the marketplace is crucial to an organization’s success. Just to create a strategic plan does not mean that all is complete, it is only the beginning. It cannot be treated as a “cure all” for an organization, but needs to be treated as a viable option...
