The Big Five Theory of Personality is five major dimensions of human personality. The OCEAN model is what these five dimensions are often referred to as. The term OCEAN is an acronym for Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. It narrows down your personality into five categories and lets you know what your tendencies may be.
I received a score of 20 for Openness to Experience/Intellect. My score for this represents a conventional, narrow interests, down to earth, and uncreative person. My results said that I am somewhat conventional. I scored this way because I am really not open to change. I don’t enjoy change at all because it isn’t the normal for me. It’s like when you’re in school and your parents get a new job out of state and you are uprooted to another place, another school and have to state all over. I agree with this statement, I feel as though it fits me.
I received a score of 69 for Conscientiousness. A high score for this trait shows a person is well-organized, self-disciplined, reliable and careful. My results said that I am well-organized and that I am reliable. I scored this way because I don’t like things out of place. I like my DVDs in alphabetical order and I don’t care for a junky room. I also like to be on time and I get upset when I even think I may be late. My friends come to me for advice because they can rely on me telling them the truth. The results for this trait fits me perfectly, I do agree with the results.
I received a score of 27 for Extraversion. A lower score for this trait shows that a person can be reserved, introverted, quiet, and inhibited. My results said that I tend to shy away from social situations. I scored this way because I know I don’t like to go out and party. I prefer staying home and chilling or having a small group of people around. I agree with the results for this

Personality has been conceptualized from a variety of theoretical perspectives, and at various levels of abstraction or breadth (John, Hampson, & Goldberg, 1991; McAdams, 1995). Each of these levels has made unique contributions to our understanding of individual differences in behavior and experience. However, the number of personality traits, and scales designed to measure them, escalated without an end in sight (Goldberg, 1971). Researchers, as well as practitioners in the field of personality assessment, were faced with a bewildering array of personality scales from which to choose, with little guidance and no overall rationale at hand. What made matters worse was that scales with the same name often measure concepts that are not the same, and scales with different...

Leadership: Nature vs. Nurture

...followers to perform for the overall good of everyone. (Schermerhorn, 2012). Instrumental leaders show a propensity to develop strategy and set procuedures in motion. In addition, the instrumental leader uses all means available to the achievement of organizational goals. While science has shown that most successful leaders have both charisma and instrumental tendencies, these traits alone are not enough to become an effective leader. Reasearch literature has been full of information regarding the qualities of different leadership traits and how they influence change within an organization. It is important to note that, it would be irresponsible not to address how leaders develop mastery of the leadership skill set (Sahgal, 2007). Personality Traits and Genetics Some leadership traits are innate. According to the University College London, there are genetic differnces associated with people who are successful leaders. The article discussed a study published online in Leadership Quarterly, claiming that a specific DNA sequence was found in people who held leadership positions. The genotype, rs4950 is passed...

Dispositional, Biological and Evolutionary Theory

...of these theories? Dispositional theory assumes that there are a finite number of personality traits that can be measured, evaluated and observed. Biological theory suggests that genetics are responsible for personality. Evolutionary theory asks how the evolved mind and present – day environment connect to shape human behavior. Dispositional Theories Dispositional theories explain the relationship between traits and personality. Two of the most well-known dispositional theories are Allport’s Psychology of the Individual Theory and Trait and Factor Theories. Gordon Allport, Hans Eysenck, Robert McCrae, and Paul Costa Jr are the more common of the dispositional theorists. The assumptions vary from those of the other theorists. However, just as the other theories, the dispositional theories provide a basis for the study of personality. Retrieved from: http://intothedepthsofthehumanmind.blogspot.com/2013/05/theoretical-perspectives-dispositional.html Dispositional Theory Limitations “All theories have strengths and limitations. One criticism of Allport’s theory is that it was not based on scientific investigations. Instead his theory was based more on speculation (Feist & Feist, 2009). However, Allport’s writings do constitute the theory. His writings did generate hypotheses although unhealthy individuals were not covered. Allport’s writings were a good basis for future personality theorists. Allport’s theory generated research primarily in...

Prior to joining HP, Carly undertook a 900 question personality test. Personality testing is used to predict performance in the workplace (Hoffman 2000). It was recognised that Carly had charismatic qualities including the vigour, enthusiasm, forward thinking vision, drive and aggressiveness, all considered necessary for the position of CEO (Robbins et al. 2008). Personality Traits

...In psychology, personality traits could be explained from many aspects, and one of them describes personality traits as categorizations of people’s particular characteristics (Burger, 1997) while others hold opposite ideas that personalities are more unique and different for each individual depending on his or her peculiar life experience. The former idea relates itself to nomothetic approach, which is a quantitative approach that studies personalities that people share in common to find out a general law that applies to everyone. The nomothetic approach suggests that people show universal traits and that personality traits are consistent within humans. Gordan Allport first brought up this approach to understand personality in 1930s, and after that, many theories has been conducted from it. Individual’s personality indicates behaviour, thus the accuracy of the indication of individual’s personality and behaviour in nomothetic approach decides the validity and effectiveness of the approach. Thus the statement that “ the nomothetic approach is the most effective way to understand an individual’s personality” can be critically evaluated by testing the validity of predictions of the theories. As mentioned above, there are two commonly accepted approaches to understand individual’s personality. The idea that people’s personalities are unique brings the idiographic approach that investigates individuals in personal and in-depth details. According to idiographic approach, each person’s...

The Big Five Personality Theory and Gender Identity

...The Big Five Personality Theory and Gender Identity According to American Psychological Association (2000), personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. The study of personality focuses on two broad areas: One is understanding individual differences in particular personality characteristics, such as sociability or irritability. The other is understanding how the various parts of a person come together as a whole. A number of different theories have emerged to explain different aspects of personality. Some theories focus on explaining how personality develops while others are concerned with individual differences in personality. The following are just a few of the major theories of personality proposed by different psychologists: Behavioral Theories, Psychoanalytic Theories. This paper focus on the Big Five personality dimensions to explain childhood personality development. Big Five Personality theory described the personality in childhood and later in life as a set of variations across five primary dimensions identified by researchers: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness/intellect. Each bipolar factor (e.g., Extraversion vs. Introversion) summarizes several more specific facets (e.g., Sociability), which, in turn, subsume a large number of even more specific traits (e.g., talkative, outgoing) (Gosling, Rentfrow and Swann Jr, 2003). These basic factors can explain and predict...

...Mieke Christiani (01120119287) Everybody have different personalities. What is personality? The word personality is derived from a Latin word “Persona” which means mask. About 2000 years ago Greek actors used to wear mask in theatres so that they may resemble characters whose roles they used to enact on the stage before the audience. Thus, according to the concept of mask, personality was conceived to be the effect and influence, which the actors wearing a mask left on the audience. Nowadays, the term of personality has been defined in various ways by the psychologists who had worked on the problem of personality and the variables influencing its development. "Personality can be broadly defined as the total quality of all individual behavior” (Russell 222). “In the words of Boring, personality is the integration of those systems of habits that represent an individual’s characteristic adjustments to his environment” (Goldberg 224). “Personality is an individual of is the entire mental organization of a human being at any stage of his development. It embraces every phase of human character: intellect, temperament, skill, morality, and every attitude that has been built up in the course of one's life." (Harris 333). Personality is the characteristic patterns thoughts, feelings and behaviors that make a person unique and different with others. Office based employees at Green Curve Interiors were administered a widely acknowledged Big Five personality online test to obtain their personality trait score. Regression line and scatter charts were the tools used in our study to find the relation between the results of personality test score and job performance ratings. In our study we categorised green curve employees according to their occupational groups. From our analysis we found that conscientiousness was the best predictor for overall job performance among different occupational groups. We also found that extraversion and openness traits did not predict overall job performance, but they did predict success in specific occupations like managers and sales staff. We conclude...

These Big 5 traits of personality are: extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness. Each trait can contribute positively or negatively on an individual’s work performance. I will describe each personality trait and how it can contribute positively on an individual’s work performance. Extraversion is characterized by sociability, assertiveness, emotional expressiveness and excitability. People who are high in this trait are often described as being outgoing and talkative, while those low in this trait are described as quiet and reserved.
