Extraversion is defined with the traits of someone who is sociable, affectionate, fun-loving, spontaneous, talkative, and person-oriented. Someone who scores high in extraversion is someone who will “thrive in the social aspects of the team”, however, they are also someone who may lose focus on the main task. Team members may also feel overburden with your sociable personality. For the personality assessment of extraversion, I was given the score of 3.5 with a class average of 4.3 and a standard deviation of 1.6. This personality has a high standard deviation, although I fell below the class average I was only a half a standard deviation below the standard deviation. This means that I am not the most sociable person when it comes to being in …show more content…
The reason this can be a challenge for these high scorers is if they were to become a mentor for a protégé. The mentor is going to provide experience and knowledge for these protégés and if this protégé does get annoyed by their mentor then it will make it hard for them to learn. Because extraversion is one of the big five personality factors then the personality trait of extraversion will be stable for most of their life, which will make it hard for these high scorers to change this. The high scorers who become a mentor must learn a level of balance when providing guidance to these protégés in order for them to gain the most knowledge. When these employers are meeting with several people trying to network with them and get their name out there, they are going to remember the people who were social. One of the barriers to networking in the chapter is being shy or introverted, since I am more introverted then that will make it harder for me to get my name out to employers. This means that for me to network, then I would need to work on being more extraversion or finding secondary networks. Secondary networks mean that I would need to know someone who can hopefully know a high position employee to help get my name and build a network. Age differences were comparable to previous findings using other inventories. One sample (N = 207) also completed two further personality measures (the NEO-FFI and the EPQ-R Short Form). Conscientiousness, Extraversion and Emotional Stability/ Neuroticism scales of the IPIP were highly correlated with those of the NEO-FFI (r = 0.69 to À0.83, p < 0.01). Agreeableness and Intellect/Openness scales correlated less strongly (r = 0.49 and 0.59 respectively, p < 0.01). The Utrecht work engagement scale (2003) and Big Five Personality scale (McCrae and Costa, 1989) have been used for this purpose. Primary data was collected from 333 frontline employees working in different retail formats. The study finds that there is considerable scope for improvement in the level of employee engagement amongst the frontline personnel in the organized retail industry. There, however does exist a positive relationship between the extraversion and conscientiousness personality traits and employee engagement. Based on the findings, the paper recommends measures for improving employee engagement levels through a better fit between employee personality and the retail work environment.
