...When we think of the influence that a city like London exercises across the globe, it’s natural to think of that influence being exercised abroad. But that is too simple. While people around the world do engage with London remotely – they learn about it at school, read about it in books and papers, see it on TV, or meet visiting and immigrant Londoners – their most intense engagement with it will be as visitors to the city, whether as students, migrant workers or tourists. Millions of people visit London every year for business, leisure or study, creating a web of human connection which helps the UK maintain a prominent position in the collective global consciousness. So what is it that makes London so attractive to potential visitors? And what can we do to ensure tourism continues to bolster our soft power? Tourism in London is booming. There were a record 16.8 million visitors from at least 60 overseas markets in 2013, 1 making London one of the most visited cities in the world. Last year tourism added over £9 billion to the London economy and is responsible for 200,000 jobs across the capital. 2 Motivations to visit vary from market to market, but the city’s cultural offer is a consistent draw; the British Museum alone recorded over 4 million visits from international tourists in 2013. 3 The Royal Family and Buckingham Palace have a strong appeal, especially to American visitors. Shopping, parks and nightlife all contribute to a perception of London as a vibrant and appealing...

...Clifford the Big Red Dog written and illustrated by Norman Bridwell is my favorite childhood book. This was my favorite childhood book because when I was four years old I got a new puppy and she was very small, but it did not take long before what I thought what was huge. She was the biggest dog on my road like Clifford was the biggest dog on Birdwell Island. My dog’s name was Lucky and she could do tricks, fetch, and scare off the bad guys, just like Clifford. She would chew shoes, chase animals, and dig up flowers. I would keep Lucky over any dog, just like Emily Elizabeth would keep Clifford. The illustrations in Clifford the Big Red Dog caught my attention as a child because the pictures were very bright and happy. I enjoyed how Norman...

...“The Big Red One” The Big Red One is a movie about the Second World War, filmed in 1980 by Samuel Fuller. In the scene after the first attack Sergeant told his soldier “we kill, don’t murder”, after the young man explained he could not kill French troopers. Sergeant compared the war with animal killing. I think it was a cruel, but almost the only appropriate attitude during the wartime. Soldier’s main goals are to win and stay alive, and excessive altruism will militate against them. This type of behavior also helps to return to the civil life; and the indifference to allies’ death works in the same way. The narrator mentioned that they stopped to try to know or remember new soldiers’ names, and one of the replacements stepped on the mine right...

...In Sam Mendes’ American Beauty, there is a deliberate use of the color red throughout the film. The color is a clear representation of life and death, as the movie’s main theme is about both and how they go hand in hand. In the first scene, the narrator and main character, Lester, played by Kevin Spacey, is pointing out how his wife’s clogs match the handles on her pruning shears as she works on her garden. We see her cut a red rose close up, and then in the next shot is from far away, showing her gardening, and all of the flowers are red roses. Even before this happens in the movie, Lester tells the audience that in a year, he’ll be dead. So we already know this movie is about Lester, his life, and then his death. With the shot pulled...

For example they have all the information included that the audience will need, such as information about the business, information about the products, competitions that they are running, promotions and offers etc. But all of this information is presented in a really fun way. For example on the website they have red bubbles all over the page and each of these bubbles has one of these bits of information on them. If you hover over these bubbles then they take you to linked ages which give you more information also presented in fun ways such as videos. | The language used in the coca cola is quite complex and would only be understood by teenagers and older. Although Coca Colas target audience is everyone from children to the elderly they have made the language hard for children to understand because children wouldn’t visit their website and would instead be relying on their parents to buy them the product. ...Adver-ties Things In to Everything When people flip through magazines, advertisements are on every other page, but they are quickly overlooked. Advertisements are part of people’s daily lives. This is a big part of what advertisement makers take into account. They need to use certain methods to somehow catch people’s attention in the piles of advertisements that surround everyone. Advertisements are actually mini works of art that take many man hours to manufacture. Advertisements are selling products by use of manipulation on media. There are many parts to advertisements that consumers are blissfully unaware of but affect them psychologically. Many things drive humans to buy goods thinking it will attract a mate, or they think it will fill a need. Advertisement makers are very good at going into a person’s mind and making them think the products they are selling are needed. The makers of advertisements are skillfully weaving masterpieces that a reader will glance upon, but still get a message conveyed to them via imagery, manipulation, and text. The audience of this advertisement might be that of the fashion conscientious. This specific advertisement was found in a 2010 Cosmopolitan magazine. Looking at the new product costs per unit (using ABC) the cost per unit for each product is much different then found under traditional. The cost per unit found under the ABC method was different than what the unit price for each product was being sold for. For blue and black pens the company was making a profit on each pen there were selling (comparing $1.18 product cost for blue and $1.16 for black which were each being sold for 1.50). Red pens cost $2.23 each to make and were being sold for 1.55 each which resulted in a loss. Purple pens were losing the company even more money with costing 4.95 to produce but were only being sold for 1.65 per pen. Under further calculations using the ABC method it was found that blue was the most profitable followed by Black, but that Red and purple were causing the company to lose money, Red was losing the most in dollars with around $6000 while purple was losing a little over $3300. The profit margin was also different than what the traditional product costing found. ABC revealed that Blue and Black pens were actually more profitable than what the company originally...

...Unit 7 Billboard assignment My billboard is an ad for ISU Redbirds Men’s Basketball game on Saturday at 5 pm. It is also Retro night. The message in the ad is trying to make the community aware of the upcoming college game and what the theme is. They chose the color red as this is the color for the college. We are the Redbirds. They also have UNI on there which is who they are playing. The picture is of one of the basketball players. I don’t watch college basketball, but if someone does they may recognize him. The board had a very large font in white so it stands out against the red background. The size also catches the drivers attention. This is a digital billboard, so when it flips to this ad the red really stands out. The demographic segment is the community. I believe more so to the adults than the students. The college students already know about the game on campus. This is to help draw the regular community...

...spider until 1972. The obviously named happy-face spider is a small spider found in the native rainforests of the islands Maui, The Big Island of Hawaii, Oahu and Molokai at elevations of 1000 to 6000 feet. Typically around a quarter of an inch long, its diet consists of small insects that it hunts mainly during the night for small insects. They spin their webs on the undersides of leaves of specific plants and usually avoid contact with humans or other potentially danger animals, although only birds present a natural threat. Humans present a possible danger due to loss of habitat to agriculture, but the population is apparently healthy. The happy-face spider’s most admired feature is its bright yellow coloring and a strange pattern of red and black spots on the abdomen. These spots vary widely from spider to spider, making them of interest to scientists who have hypothesized that the different spots provide camouflage against birds and other predators. Strangely enough, the red and black spots, combined with the yellow body, tend to make the spider's abdomen look like the widely known yellow smiley face. The expressions on the abdomen of the spider can range from sad, happy, and excited, to bored or angry. Though individuals differ extremely in their color patterns, these differences are evenly distributed, with the same ratio of Yellow forms to Red front forms in every population, regardless of its separation from the others. Mating experiments reveal that the genetic mechanism...

...The short story "Red from Green" was written by Maile Meloy in 2009. The story is about a fifteen year old girl called Sam. Sam is from Montana, which is also where the setting is played. The narrator - Maile Maloy - is born and raised in Montana. This might be why she chose to set the setting here. Sam's mother is dead, so Sam lives alone with her father. Sam and her father's relationship seem very good. Sam's a near-future sophomore, but has recently been offered a scholarship to a boarding school back east - she hasn't accepted the offer yet. Originally the "going to boarder school thing" was the father idea, but every time the subject came up, he looked very dismayed. (P. 8 L. 6-7). She is very insecure in herself and her choices, which we can see by her way of doubting a lot when having to take choices throughout the story - "She had a sense that she wasn't equipped for it (boarding school). And she was wondering if she really had perfect teeth (she was told that she had perfect teeth earlier in the story)". (P. 9 L. 62-63). For as long as Sam can remember, she has always been down the river every summer with her father. No matter how the weather was - "in dozen rainstorms, and in hot sun that burned the print of swimsuit straps into her shoulders."(P. 8 L. 10-12). But in the story we experience their last float trip down the river. Sam and her father went down the river with her uncle - Harry - and her uncle's client - Layton. At a time in the story Sam and Layton are...

...Color Symbolism Rough Draft Throughout life a person experiences and sees many different colors. All colors send a hidden message to a person. The message can be based on that person’s emotion or what they just simply think the color’s message is. “Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions”, this was said by Pablo Picasso. What he means by this is that colors can and will have a very big effect on your emotions and actions. Looking at certain colors can change your whole mood very quickly whether it’s great or awful. Some dark colors could cause you to be sad, angry, or gloomy. But when a person looks at bright, beautiful colors it can make them very happy, friendly and social. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby,...

...American Literature October 19, 2012 The Many Shades of Red The color red: it is beautiful, rich, and full of meaning. It represents many different things in today’s world such as love, danger, and revenge. Similarly, in the novel, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the color red is especially prominent. Color is important in this novel because every color has symbolic meaning behind it. This device of symbolism is used well in the novel, especially through the color red. It is the most important color because it is used the most, in the title of the book, and the color of the ‘A’. The color red symbolizes passion, shame and ultimately love. In The Scarlet Letter, it begins with a detailed description of a rose bush which symbolizes Hester and her passion. Roses are obviously red so immediately, red is going to be a very important color. In the following quote, it describes the rose bush and how it represents Hester: “This rose bush by a strange chance, has been kept alive in history; but whether it had merely survived out of the stern old wilderness, so long after the fall of the gigantic pines and oaks that originally overshadowed it, - or whether, as there is fair authority for believing, it had sprung up under the footsteps of the sainted Ann Hutchinson, as she entered the prison-door, - we shall not take upon us to determine” (50). This is the first encounter with red. It is the description of a wild red rosebush growing outside the prison where Hester was imprisoned...

...through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead”is another foreshadowing of it.And his name William Armstrong ,“which is like tying a big tail on a small kite. Such a name sounds good only on a tombstone” is absolutely the hint that he will die.Other important foreshadowings are mainly about the the scarlet ibis. For example, the arrival of the red bird and its death, and it’s bad luck gives it a red death, “it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree …death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers”, which imply the way of Doodle’s death, because at the end of the story, the sentence “He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red”shows us the similarity between the death of the scarlet ibis and Doodle. The symbols in the short story are also important to help the author illustrate the theme of it.The scarlet ibis which stands for Doole,is one of these symbols. They have some similarities. For example,The scarlet ibis is small and fragile, which is just like Doole. And the way how they dead is also similar. The color, red,is a big symbol in the short story. There is lots of red that we can found in the story. For example, the scarlet ibis itself is red,the “bleeding tree” makes us think of the color red and when Doodle were born ,his body is red.As for his death, from the line “He...

...Making a pen bag I have a very cute pen bag which you can put your pens and eraser. If you look at it in the front, the shape is a rectangle. If you look at its profile, it is a triangle. The design is for the capacity. There is a red plastic zipper on the top. Red is a main color of the pen bag. It is two double, and the materials are different. The outside is the soft plastic, and the inside is the hard cotton. If it is dirty, you can clean it with water, or wipe it with wet rag. If you have time, you can try to make a pen bag. It is very easy, and making one does not need much time. Firstly, you need to find some materials. You can use the old curtain, or bed sheet. If you want to make a new one, you can buy the fabric in the Wal-Mart. If you want a simple style, you can choose a pure color fabric. If you want a Korean style, you can choose a calico. Another thing you need is fusible interlining. You can buy the zipper when you buy the fabric. They should be in the same place in the Wal-Mart. The quality of the zipper is very important because its importance reflect the quality of the pen bag. The color of the zipper has better be similar as the fabric, or same as the main color of the fabric. You need some strings which color is same as the zipper. Moreover, we start to make a pen bag. You cut two cloths as 22*18 cm, and cut the fusible interlining in the same way. Then you iron them separately, one cloth with one fusible interlining. The edges of the fabric...
