...Tattoos and Body Piercings Carrie Lynn Zik ENG/147 December 22, 2014 Jenny Mark Tattoos and Body Piercings What is the first impression people get whenever they see someone with a face full of piercings or tattoos all over their body? What were they thinking? Why would they do that? Are they in a gang or are they going to hurt someone? Movies and society have been stereotyping those with tattoos and body piercings for years. The truth of the art is much more than skin deep. While piercings and tattoos have become a trend, educating people about the culture, history, and risk of them can change society’s perspective on today’s definition. Tattoos and body piercings have been around for thousands of years, representing different definitions for each culture. According to The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, (4th) “historical research has shown that Egyptians identified tattooing with fertility and nobility during 4000-2000 BC” (Piercings and tattoos”, 2014, para 1.) In other gathering societies, tattoos and body piercings represented socialization symbols in initiation rituals and ceremonies. Body piercings have been around just as long as tattoos. Whenever body piercings started, the ear was the most famous body part to pierce among people in Africa, India, Indonesia, and North and South America (“Piercings,” 2014.) However, body modification soon became popular including other body parts. For instance, the lip, tongue, eyebrows, nipples, navel, genitals...

...Society: Why the issues with Body Piercings? By R. Hackett Jr. 2009 Have you ever walked down the street and seen someone who looks different than you in one way or another and thought, “What was that person thinking?” Imagine that person, at the very same moment, thinking the same thing about you? Often we are quick to judge without taking into consideration each person’s reasons for what they do and how they look. While some say body piercing's look unprofessional and do not belong in today’s society, body piercing is a personal choice that one makes for his or her own individual reason. Some people get body piercing’s for religious reasons, some for right of passage, decoration, fashion and still yet some go out and get body piercing’s as a form of rebellion. Regardless of the reason, we must remember to respect other’s decisions and perhaps stop and take a moment to consider that perhaps the body piercing represents something more and goes further than skin deep. As a woman you may choose to only have your ears pierced one time with only one hole in each ear or multiple times with numerous holes in varying parts of the ear. As a man you may choose to have a hole in each ear, only one of your ears pierced or neither of them at all. Individual’s have chosen many different ways to express themselves with piercing’s in the ear. In today’s society parents are even faced with having to decide if they are going to get their newborn baby’s ears pierced. (Sanders...

...Grabiela Juarez Mr. Draney An expression that is widely known is not to judge a book by its cover. In relation to that, people judge and criticize the appearance and behavior of a person without knowing that person’s side of the story. Different people have been socially constructed to believe what is acceptable and what is not pertaining on how they grew up. People are judged by what they wear, and focus on what is appealing to them as an individual, as well as society. A generalization of a person, who would be considered taboo, is all black clothing, black hair, and black lipstick. A person like this would be considered: emotional, demonic, anti-social. This is the quote on quote “judging a book by its cover”. Fact could be the person is the sweetest. What prevents us from getting to know people? Why do we often automatically go for the stereotype, instead of learning something about the people we meet? What could be viewed in one culture as normal, could not be viewed in another the same, and could even be discriminated against. For example, other parts of the country wearing rings around their neck to elongate it, would show beauty. In the United States it would be considered taboo. There are many things society has considered taboo just for the fact that it is queer to them. The biggie socially constructionism would be religion. It affects the views of so many people. If a religious person, says they do not like tattoos, because god brought us onto this earth, without...

While working on my master’s degree, I lost my mom to cancer. Soon after, I struggled to find myself and experimented with many drugs, only to find out that they weren’t the answer and that my mom wasn’t coming back.” In this scenario, I originally selected the wrong person, and my selection was based on appearance. Jenna, who the story was about, didn’t strike me as someone who had earned a Master’s degree simply because she looked very young. Her appearance also led me to believe that she was a high school student, especially with the nose piercing and the piercing near her eye. I was surprised to learn that she actually had 13 piercings merely because I have never been taught by an instructor who had...

...Even with thorough assessment before the anesthetic procedure patient may develop complications. Needle breakage can happen with sudden and unexpected movement by the patient during the needle insertion. It can also happen with poor injection technique. If the needle can be taken out without difficulty there is no emergency. If the needle is stuck inside, overtime it can be encased by scar tissue. To prevent the needle breakage inform the patient about the anesthesia before and during the injection. Use long and large gauge needles which are less prone to breakage. Dental hygienist should be careful not to bend the needle because it weakens the needle. The solution should be injected slowly, so it does not create forceful contact with bone which causes pain to the patient. Patient can have pain from the injection from multiple reasons such as careless injection technique, careless attitude toward the client. Pain can also come from dull needle, a barbed needle caused by hitting the bone or quick deposition of anesthetic solution. Although it is not possible to give pain free injection every time, because everyone react differently to injections. But dental hygienist can take many precautions to minimize the pain during injection, such as using proper technique of injection, depositing few drops and waiting five seconds before slowly inserting to 2 to 3 mm until the injection site is reached. Use sharp needles not dull ones. Topical anesthetic can be used before needle insertion...

...October 29, 2012 An Interpretation of Society Today Back to 1921, writer Frederick R. Banard published an article titled, “One Look is Worth A Thousand Words”. To this day that phrase still remains true and is referenced often. A picture does tell a story, but what kind of story it tells depends on how it is interpreted. Generation Me author Jean Twenge shows self-esteem and interest in self in many different ways throughout the book. Here, the two images portrayed display those same things along with self-confidence and self worth. As Twenge states, “The society that molds you when you are young stays with you the rest of your life” (Twenge 2). The images hold true to Twenge’s statement. Generation Me has evolved into an all about me society. The first image is that of a young, white, obese male walking through a crowded area. The young man is wearing a brown shirt with the phrase, “I’M #1 SO WHY TRY HARDER” printed front and center where everyone can notice. The second image has an older man, possibly in his sixties, dressed in a navy suit and blue tie and carrying a brown leather brief case. The older man is looking at a younger man in his twenties. The younger man is wearing a black suit jacket, casual striped button up shirt unbuttoned at the top, and jeans. Instead of a brief case, the younger man is holding a yellow binder along with a manila folder in one hand and a smart phone in the other. The images show GenMe’s focus on self. The younger men in each image are...

...You will not have to be a celebrity to pierce your navel, as you can easily get it from any piercing shop today. If we look back to the middle of the 19th century, we will see that movie producers in Hollywood were banned from showing navel or belly buttons. This is simply because, Hollywood actresses at that time would wear jewels and pricy gems in their navel and authorities wanted to limit this practice. However, that was the time when the practice of wearing valuable jewels on Navel had been started. The History of Navel Piercing In ancient civilization, the trend of body piercing was considered as the sign of courage and fierceness. In ancient Egypt, Pharaohs believed that navel rings were the sign of transition from the life to the infinity....

...April 1, 2014 Body Modifications To me body modifications are a way to show and express a certain creativity or to show an individualism for everyone to see that you want to be unique and stand out above everyone else. There are many different ways to change your image. Using make-up, dying your hair, cutting your hair, working out, gaining weight, and tattoos and piercings are all different ways to change the way you look. Most of the people who do any of those things don’t change their look because other people told them too, they do it so that they can feel better about themselves in any way you can. I interviewed five people I know and found out their opinions on their body modifications if they had any and what they think about it if they do not. My boyfriend who has gauges and piercings told me that he had to hide his piercings in fear that his father would not approve of them since he works with the military. So for a long time he had to always be self-aware of what his dad would day to him if he found out. Then one day he decided to just show him and he said “I don’t understand why you would want to have those in your ears but if that’s what you want then I cannot tell you that you cannot have them.” In my own opinion I think that’s the best way to handle a situation with a child wanting to change their appearance. I then interviewed my own mother because I know she has a hard time coming to terms with people who want to put something on their body to change what...

...based off of the influences of society, these can consist of: Circumcision, Eating Disorders, Body Building, Cosmetic Surgery, and Body Art. The major influences of these are The Media, Religions, and what people in societies have determined is socially acceptable. Abbie J. Chessler (1997) “Conformity is a powerful social force that perpetuates circumcision of both male and females” (Para. 6). For women in certain places being uncircumcised meant that the individual was unmarriageable. The purpose of female circumcisions was to control their sexuality for patriarchal reasons. As for men circumcision was a religious ritual that in modern day became a way to prevent hazardous health conditions. Eating Disorders are caused by individuals that have a perfectionist point of view in relation to their own body. The media creates an image of having no body fat that many define as perfection when it comes to beauty; this causes insecurities in people that think that they do not meet this measurement of 3 appearance, leading to low self-esteem problems. Some start becoming bulimic or anorexic to attempt to reach the image that influences society. In some cases Body building can be considered a way of feeling in control. It can be a fight for masculinity, or a way to try and fit the social standard of what is accepted. Many males body build because they are insecure about their bodies, they have doubt in their...

...Tattoos and piercings Michael Johnson 7/18/13 EN1420 While it is true that many companies forbid visible piercings and tattoos, more and more companies are beginning to broaden their views on visible body modifications. In the past, tattoos were seen as the mark of gangsters and other criminals and sailors, while body piercing was mostly unheard of except the lip plates you read about in National Geographic. Hopefully, the current attitude will change to be more accepting once the generation from the 80's and 90's enter into the power structure. As it stands, the baby boomer generation still holds most of the policy deciding positions within a company. They were brought up on conservative values, which stuck with them even after the 60's and 70's of their youth. Now that their children are coming into the power positions, the restrictions of body art are starting to loosen in the professional world. While certain "extreme" mods are still highly frowned upon, like facial and neck tattoos and large gauge earring and other facial mods, small things like a single lip piercing, tongue piercing, or nose piercing are no longer a deciding factor for HR personnel. There are certain companies that are more lenient than others, such as AT&T. While their salespeople and other face-to-face customer interaction folks, the salesmen and installers, must maintain a clean cut appearance, the call center representatives have virtually no restrictions on visible body mods. Since this...

...Cloutier v. Costco Wholesale Corp. In this case Kimberly Cloutier worked as a cashier for Costco. In March 2001, Costco revised its dress code to prohibit all facial jewelry, aside from earrings. Cloutier was advised to remove facial piercings. Cloutier refused because she is a member of the Church of Body Modification (CBM), which was established in 1999 and has about 1,000 members who participate in such practices as piercing, tattooing, branding, cutting, and body manipulation. Eventually, Cloutier was fired. The district court granted summary judgment on the basis that Costco had offered a reasonable accommodation. But the First Circuit decides to uphold the grant of summary judgment on other grounds. The only accommodation that Cloutier will accept is exemption from the dress code. The First Circuit holds that Costco had no duty to offer a reasonable accommodation because doing so would create an undue hardship. An accommodation constitutes an undue hardship if it would impose more than a de minimis cost on the employer. The undue hardship claimed by Costco is that it has a legitimate interest in presenting a workforce to its customers that is, at least in Costco's eyes, reasonably professional in appearance. Costco has determined that facial piercings, aside from earrings, detract from the "neat, clean and professional image" that it aims to cultivate. Such a business determination is within its discretion. For similar reasons, the Court also upholds the grant of summary judgment...
