...The Horrors of Boko Haram When people hear the word terrorism, fear becomes a primary emotion. There are many different kinds of terrorism that can occur. There are also many different kinds of groups that can use terrorism to influence others or get the results they seek. But to the person or group committing terrorism it isn’t terrorism in their eyes. In their eyes, it becomes a type of political or social protest. This is key in understanding the Boko Haram simply because they truly believed what they were doing was right and by doing the heinous activities they would get their point across. It is also important to see what theoretical perspectives the Boko Haram ties into and lastly how globalization and the global village fall into it as well. The Boko Haram is a Nigeria radical Islamist group that has caused numerous havoc throughout Africa. The groups official name is Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, which means “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings.” Boko Haram was founded in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf. The group was taken over by Abubakar Shekau when Yusuf was killed in 2009. Boko Haram promotes a “version of Islam which makes it "haram", or forbidden, for Muslims to take part in any political or social activity associated with Western society” (BBC News). This included voting in elections, wearing shirts and trousers or receiving a secular education. A main goal that the group pushed to achieve was to create an Islamic...

...A focus on charity 1. The text “The advert that beggars belief” is about whether or not you should give money to beggars or not. First, it gives a view on how beggars are being looked at in India where they can earn a lot of money as it’s a part of their culture to give money to the beggars even though they are not rich themselves. The text then turns to view on the British beggars, and how the government tries to stop the begging. The text criticizes how the government uses actual money to prevent people from giving money to the beggars instead of actually handing that money out and let people decide themselves. With slogans like “Killing With Kindness” they say that nobody needs the money and people only do harm by donating money. It is said that 86 % of the beggars use the money on drugs, but then what about the last 14 %? Are they dying because you are not donating money? 2. First sentence would be “A clever beggar, it is often claimed, can earn more in a month than a bank clerk does”. This is said about Indian beggars that live on other people’s hard earned money. Secondly, “We are always looking for reasons to justify our lack of charity”. This is about us citizens in the western civilization always being selfish and don’t want to spend money on other people. Third sentence is related to the above and is about the campaign ran by the government: ”This is a disgraceful advertising campaign”. The fourth sentence is also related to the second and third: “…Discourage...

...A famous quote I have heard by J.C. Watts is, “Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking.” That is something that my parents taught me as a young child. I have also been told to treat someone the way I would like to be treated, and I try to live by those mottos to this day. My parents told me that I should not follow everyone else’s actions and to be my own person. Sometimes it can be difficult because in the real world not everyone is easy to get along with and there can be so many ways to fall into peer pressure. When I was younger, I was always taught that if I did not do the right thing something bad would happen. I heard the same thing everywhere I went. If I was not going to obey my parents when I was told to do something, I would be sent to my room for a time out. If I did not listen to what my teacher said, I would be sitting in a desk bored out of my mind after school to serve a detention. If I told a sin at church, I would go to Hell and not Heaven. So, my parents brainwashed me into doing the right thing at a young age. That made it really easy for me to get along with almost everybody because everyone loves a goodie goodie when you are little. I am a pretty easy going person because it is important to get along with as many people as possible. I like to live in the moment and have fun. I am almost always happy because creating a positive vibe with the people surrounding me is extremely important. Nobody wants anyone else being rude to them, so...

...whole nation, have had to make some compromises. One of the biggest, broadest issues our country has been facing is the recent budget cuts in numerous different categories including mental health care. Mental health care has gotten the short end of the stick in the last few years, and it has become a spiraling problem in the United States. Between 2009 and 2011 the United States witnessed some of the largest state budget cuts in history, and we are still suffering from the consequences of doing so. Where does a majority of homelessness, suicide, substance abuse and jail overcrowding stem from? If you take a closer look it will become very clear that cutting the funding for mental health research and treatment has left these mentally ill patients with very few options suitable enough for their varying conditions. Due to the lack of appropriate facilities needed to properly diagnose and treat mentally ill patients, jails are becoming overcrowded and homelessness is at an all-time high. The importance of mental health care is being put on the back burner while, instead, it needs to be a priority and that is why President Obama’s proposition to increase funding to aid the mentally ill in 2014 is extremely necessary. As states cut mental health care funding, prisons are becoming an asylum. There is a very common misconception among the general public that mentally ill individuals are extremely violent, however, this statement has proven to be very false. The unfortunate truth is...

...Homeless in Missoula Kelsey Brandewie Homelessness in Missoula, Mt has been a tremendous issue that the community is trying very hard to eliminate. What people do not know, is that the people out on the streets downtown and around the city, only make up 11% of the homelessness (2.) Those are not the only people struggling with life. There are families that do not have a steady home that the community does not realize need help because most of them have jobs and seem normal but in reality they are struggling to make ends meet. That is what the community needs to come together and fix. There is a rough estimate of at least 200 people who are homeless in Missoula.(1) There are of course, the visible homeless but 25% of the homeless, the “chronically” homeless that seemed to be overlooked by the community. Most of the homeless, of that 25% are families. (1) Families in which have children in them, who are trying so hard to provide for them and give them a normal life. These children attend public school but for them they never know where they will be sleeping that night once they leave school. Some of them sleep in their cars or they go from house to house but none of those houses are their homes. That is not a healthy life style for anyone to live, especially children. The sad thing is though, of all the resources that are at their feet, they only seem to use 50% of them (1.) They feel like they do not need the help as much as others might, so they are too afraid to ask for...

...THE COUNTRY AND CITY LIFE If you have two choices: living in the countryside or living in the city, which one will you choose? Life in the city or life in the countryside has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some people think that living in the countryside is better, but some don’t think so, they say that life in the city is more convenient. There are lots of differences between them. ...English 111 05 March 4, 2014 Homelessness In the U.S. there seems to be a lot of homeless people. Approximately 3.5 million people are likely to experience homelessness in any given year(www.nlchp.org). There are many reasons why people become homeless which are, domestic violence, addiction disorders, lack of jobs, mental and medical health issues, lack of education, and insurance. Some of these problems spiral out of control resulting in the inability to provide for oneself or ones family. In most cases homelessness is rarely caused by one factor but it can happen. Fifty percent of the cities surveyed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors identified domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness. Approximately sixty three percent of homeless women have experienced domestic violence in their lives (National Coalition for the Homeless). Women generally are scared to ask for help for the fear of the one causing their violence may take it out on the one that helps her so therefore women tend to fend for themselves. Some women think it will ruin their pride to ask for help so they stay until the violence gets so bad they can’t take it anymore. So they choose to be homeless verses asking friends and family for help. Addiction and substance abuse isn’t generally a cause of its own in homelessness but it does happen that way. Most people that have an addiction or substance abuse problem are already homeless but for some people it is a reason...

...A poor, infirm, weak, and despised old man: But yet I call you servile ministers Lear sees himself as a victim of injustice – his daughters have betrayed him and now he's caught out on the heath during a terrible storm. What's interesting about this passage is the way Lear literally accuses the storm of being his daughters' agent ("servile minister"). For Lear, it seems the whole world is against him. Poor naked wretches, whereso'er you are,..... That thou mayst shake the superflux to them, And show the heavens more just This is an important moment for King Lear, who has never before contemplated the plight of homelessness. Here, he realizes that he hasn't done enough to solve the homeless problem in his kingdom as he acknowledges that, as king, he had the power and authority to do something about it. This is pretty extraordinary because it suggests that the acts of human beings are the things that prove "the heavens [to be] more just." In other words, there can only be justice in the world when human beings behave justly toward each other. BANY The gods defend her [Cordelia]! Bear him hence awhile. Enter Lear with Cordelia's dead body in his arms If you want evidence that divine justice does not exist in the world of the play, look no further. Just as Albany prays to the gods to protect the innocent Cordelia from harm, Lear enters holding Cordelia's lifeless body in his arms. No wonder King Lear is known as Shakespeare's "bleakest"...

...Homelessness in California Introduction Homelessness is a condition or a state where an individual or a family does not have a home to live in. Along with that, the person is deprived of the legal and the social dimensions making him emotionally weak and in the state of isolation. Since the year 1980s, there had been a great shock to the Americans due to the rising homelessness. This led to a burst in the studies and the rising stories related to the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of July 1987. In this act, there was an interference allowed of the federal government into this policy of homelessness, which had created many issues. For many years after that, this issue of homelessness remained on the top of the line in the political issues face by the Californian government. Basically the non-profit organizations focused on improving the life quality of the people in the city, especially those who did not have a place to spend their nights. It is a fact that there should be some very efficient approach to eliminate this homelessness problem, the Californian government has taken some steps and brought in a modest change in their policies to attack this homelessness problem very obviously. Their main change in the policy was to provide housing to the poor and the needy people (Hombs, Mary Ellen, and Mitch Snyder, 1982). Despite this action which the government took, there had been a consensus in the year 1980 which reflected the fact that the homelessness in US...

...America’s homeless veterans. Then, I will discuss the value of sociological research into this issue. Finally, I will determine if there are practical implications of sociological inquiry. There is a serious homeless problem that plagues many Americans, including those Americans that fought for our country. Although we tend to hold servicemen in high regard, many people are very insensitive to those veterans that become homeless. Most people believe that homelessness is due to controllable factors such as laziness or refusal to work. Nothing can be further from the truth. Veterans not only make up a disproportionate percentage of the homeless population, but also stay homeless for longer. In fact, veterans are at a greater risk of becoming homeless due to a number of factors including unique military skills not needed in the civilian sector, combat-related health issues, minimal income due to unemployment, and a shortage of safe, affordable housing. Prior to becoming homeless, many veterans at risk of homelessness have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder or have acquired addictions during their military service. “At least 45 percent of homeless veterans suffer from mental illness, while over 50 percent have substance abuse problems. Many are dually-diagnosed, which especially challenges existing service-delivery systems”(Sternheimer, 2011). Veterans’ family, social, and professional networks may have been broken due to...

Losing one’s job, becoming ill, and a lack of affordable housing can all play a major role in ones becoming homeless. What exactly does it mean to be homeless? Webster’s Dictionary defines the word homeless as having no home or permanent place of residence. To the conflict theorist social class is extremely important in this perspective for it defines your place in the pyramid of power.
