...John Lee – Crime & Industrialisation in England Reading Task Reasons for the increase in crime in 1st half of C19th * Dislocation, poverty and overcrowding * Criminal justice was ineffective * The labour market workers were periodically out of work without any benefit/social security * Serious disease * Cities were growing far too fast for health and safety Impact of ‘rookeries’ -Growth of towns encouraged an ‘urban underworld’ of thieves -Used rookeries as a place to hide -Would recuperate and distribute produce of criminal activity - Not just thieves who used these spaces but a variety of other criminals e.g. receivers of stolen property, currency forgers and coiners - Theses areas were very dangerous even for armed police Reasons for decrease in 2nd half of C19th -Offences fell steadily from mid-1840 to WW1 - Industrial capitalism was entering a phase of sustained expansionism – Britain was the ‘workshop of the world’, further ahead than France, Germany and USA in becoming 1st industrialised nation -The stabilisation of the urban working class and changing relationship between working class and crime: Middle class gradually lost its fear of the working class as a whole as were more worried about the socialist movement and trade unions. - The urban changes weakened power and organisation of traditional professional crime - The development of the new police and criminal justice system ‘Old criminal gangs were no match for the new...

...MILLER v. ALABAMA Facts: On July 15, 2003 Evan Miller who was 14 years old, was at home when Cole Cannon a drug dealer, came to Miller’s house to make a drug deal with Millers mom. After the drug deal Miller and his friend Colby Smith went to Cannons house where they smoked weed and played drinking games. After Cannon passed out Miller stole his wallet and took 300$ splitting it with Smith. When Miller tried to put the wallet back Cannon woke up and grabbed him by the throat, Smith grabbed a baseball bat and hit Cannon with it until he released Miller, and then Miller grabbed the bat and started hitting Cannon in the head. Miller placed a sheet over Cannons head and stated “I am God, I’ve come to take your life,’ before hitting Cannon one last time and then returning to his own trailer with smith. The two boys Smith and Miller then came back to Cannons trailer deciding to cover up evidence and set two fires. Cannon eventually died from smoke inhalation and his injuries from the beating. The state charged Miller as an adult with murder in the course of arson. Which carries a mandatory minimum punishment of life without parole. Miller argued that he was only 14 and not an adult so being sentenced to life without parole was a cruel and unusual punishment and unconstitutional under the 8th and 14th amendments. Issue:Is sentencing a 14 year old boy to life without parole a cruel and unusual punishment Rule:The eighth amendment restricts the severity of punishments that...

...Alcohol produces its effects by altering the release of two major types of neurotransmitters - GABA and glutamate. GABA is the most prevalent of the neurotransmitters that decrease activity in the brain, while glutamate is the most common activity-increasing neurotransmitter. Alcohol suppresses glutamate release and increases GABA levels. These effects combine to produce a general decrease in the brain's activity, and they are responsible for many of the experiences associated with binge drinking. Areas of the brain affected (and common experiences that result) include those responsible for attention (being inattentive), memory (blacking out), judgement (making foolish decisions), coordination (swaying and stumbling), and anxiety (feeling relaxed). Alcohol also affects the brain area which controls basic functions that are necessary for you to live, such as breathing and heart rate. If you drink too much alcohol, the brain activity related to these functions can decrease to a point where your breathing and heart stop. You might think you would pass out before drinking enough to kill yourself, but alcohol remains in your stomach and continues to be absorbed into your blood while you sleep. The likelihood of death increases when large amounts of alcohol are consumed in a short time. Drinking techniques that encourage rapid consumption include Jello cubes, beer bongs, and keg stands. Dangerous styles of drinking include chugging and having multiple shots in a row. It's true...

...I don't have any children yet, so my breasts are still more aesthetic than functional. I mostly use them as a food shelf, a cellphone case, and an in-flight pillow. When I was young and single and had less self-esteem, I used to joke that my breasts were "all I had" (good one, unhappy baby self!), but now that I'm older, I don’t have to rely on them to feel beautiful—for the time being, they're just parts of me that fill my clothes and make my back hurt and, sure, make me feel pretty sometimes. I just don’t think about them that much anymore. Thanks to Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History, a surprisingly emotional book by Florence Williams, though, that's all changing. All of a sudden I can't stop thinking about my breasts. Because it turns out they are total jerks. Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History by Florence Williams W.W. Norton In Breasts, Williams, a contributing editor for Outside magazine, attempts to offer a comprehensive social, cultural, medical, and scientific history of the human breast, a la single-word-titled best-sellers like Cod or Salt or Stiff—though not, alas, Balls. (In an act of one-word-wonder solidarity, Stiff author Mary Roach blurbed Breasts, citing Williams' "double-D talents.") Though that genre of sweeping, single-topic histories can wind up feeling hasty and reductive (it's hard to write the history of one thing without touching on the history of all other things), Williams’ writing is scientifically detailed yet...

...The Taboo Of Boobs Introduction: Boobs, boobies, jugs, tits, suckers, knockers, hooters or breasts. Over time breasts have developed many different names and new meanings. Some may look at boobs as nothing more than just the anatomy of a female, while others love them, and some think that they are evil and a mark of death. In every era, from early and middle ages, through the renaissance, and then 19th and twentieth century, breasts have fascinated human beings. Breasts are more than a body part that we need for reproduction, they play a major role in the development of society and our social norms. The controversy of importance is argued by doctors as well as piers. Today most people affiliate breasts with vanity. People have always loved the beauty in breasts, but society has lost the value in them and why they are beautiful. What is so great to look at, when everyone’s got them, and if they don’t, they can buy some at your local doctor’s office. So why do people buy them? And is bigger the better? There really isn’t an answer to that question because they are both very broad topics and constantly changing. We can try and interpret these answers with social norms which vary in different cultures, or we can look at research and biology and try and answer the questions scientifically. Either approach will lead you to controversy because over time there purpose in life has changed significantly. And there are debates all over the...

I walked over about 1 meter away and began making hip circles again. then i crawled over to him making hump moves. and I ran my hands slowly down his legs and spread them apart. i took his shirt off and sat on his legs, his legs were apart so was mine. tHEN I stroked his body. i made it look like i was gonna kiss him but purposely missed. instead i made noises..while stroking him i slid down off his knees, so i was half laying down, half having my heels running on his legs, touching myself. i touched my body all over again playing especially with my boobs. i did another big hip circle and hovered so my boobs were in his face. ;) i could tell he wanted to just grab them cuz he was trying to bust his hands out. I slid my boobs slowly up and down his face. he licked them haha. i slid them down his chest, stomach and onto the ground. I then took of my thong slowly and I layed on the floor rubbing my clit, making slight moans. then i went over to him and finally kissed him and unlocked the cuffs. he...

...the perfect bust, and the perfect body. Plastic surgery should be free of restrictions for personal reasons, health reasons, and to correct deformities. Personal cosmetic surgery should not be looked as “fake.” I had interviewed an eighteen year old girl Aly, who very soon would like to get her bust done. I had asked her,” Why do you need a boob job? You have a decent size bust.” She responded with,” I want a boob job because, even though I have a decent size bust, the laws of gravity has worked its ways on me. I hit puberty when I was in sixth grade, and my body started changing. By the end of my sixth grade year I was a full C cup. Now, after so many years, they have drooped quite a bit. One day my grandmother noticed, she said,’ Oh my god! mija! Why are your boobs so droopy?’ I did not understand what she was talking about, until she had explained to me that hers are not as nearly droopy as mine. She is quite older then me, and she had nursed three children. Since then, I have been adamant about getting a breast lift. It is also very embarrassing when I wear a bikini, because I am increasingly self conscious of how saggy my boobs are. Until I get my breast lift, I will continue to be self conscious about my body.” For some people, reconstructive cosmetic surgery is necessary for severe health reasons. For example, on the news, a young girl was involved in a terrible car accident where the car...

...All of those assets come with a price. Most women think now they need to be skinny and have a big chest to even be someone in this world. Medical advances, greater public acceptance of plastic surgery, and the media have all contributed to the problem. Men also contribute their ideal woman, which television and pornographic material create; but in reality most women aren’t Barbie dolls and shouldn’t have to be to succeed or be someone in life. Dr. David Sarwer, a University of Pennsylvania psychologist who has studied augmentation, said “The current ideal of female beauty -- that of a thin, well-toned, yet big-breasted woman -- rarely occurs without restrictive dieting, excessive exercise, and cosmetic surgery.” Women today don’t need boob jobs because they create an unrealistic prototype of women, make physical features the main focus, and can also be very dangerous. Plastic surgery dates back as early as 700 BC, when doctors in ancient India were performing skin grafts. By the 1st century, Romans were...

...6 Things Women Should be Prepared for when They Join the Military As of 2011, only 14% of service members in the armed forces were female.[i] Other females are usually few and far between so get used to the idea of figuring out gender specific details on your own. If you count Private Benjamin or Demi Moore in whatever movie she shaved her head for; women generally have a skewed perception of what they are in for when they join. #6 Boobs You will need to figure out what to do with your boobs. Chances are as a civilian, you don’t think too much about your sweater puppies (some occupations are certainly an exception) but due to the physical nature of what you do they will need to be handled. Got big ones? Short of strapping them down with a ratchet strap, you have got to either (A) invest in some serious sports bras or (B) wear two more at one time and hope you don’t suffocate a la Keira Knightly in Pirates of the Caribbean. The female dress uniform requires all the medals and awards to be placed on a straight line but also to follow the curves of the soldier. Which basically means, “Hey take these and pin them somewhere on your chest, just make sure they are straight on those curves of yours.” The guys get to take off their jacket, measure it and put it on. All the ladies, are left standing in a mirror poking sharp pins into our chest and hoping they’re straight. #5 People Will Automatically Assume You Suck You’ve watched all the recruiter’s videos of everyone working...
