...One Night with Blue Note “One Night with Blue Note” directed by John Jopson is based on a jazz concert performed at The Town Hall in New York City on February 22, 1985. This film brings together some of the jazz legends associated with Blue Note over the years as well as some newly signed artists. The concert introduces more than 30 of the world’s most revered jazz musicians in the form of all-star bands and is considered by many to be one of the most important nights in jazz history. Some of the great jazz musicians we heard were Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, Jimmy Smith, Woody Shaw, Walter Davis Jr., Michel Petrucciani Art Blakey, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Henderson, Grover Washington, Jr., and Tony Williams. My favorite artist in the film was Michel Petrucciani. He is not only a great talented pianist but an inspiration as well. Michel Petrucciani was born with osteogenesis imperfecta which is a genetic disease that causes brittle bones and short stature. He still became one of the most accomplished jazz pianists of his generation, despite having arms which caused him pain. I believe that he teaches us that anything is possible with hard work and dedication no matter how hard things may seem. Although I am not a big music fan, I feel this concert was worthwhile watching as well as listening too. At the end I am glad I watched this film because it allowed me to be more open minded to music and the different styles and forms. These people and countless more, and innumerable...

...easier. The 20th century brought many technological advances in the world from the television to the air conditioner. Many of the technologies so fundamental to everyday life came from advancement during this time. The author of the paper will discuss three technological developments in the 20th century including: the airplane, the automobile, and the computer. The Airplane For centuries humans wanted to invent a device that would allow them to fly like birds. Kites, gliders, and air balloons were many of man’s creations to attempt to derive the privilege of flying. Two men, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright, were the first to find some success in inventing a device that enabled flying. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers flew there invention for the first time. However, this was only a small start because their aircraft did not fly very high and it only stayed in the air for about a minute. Although this was a small triumph in the goal of flight it marked the beginning of the technological advances that produced the modern airplane. When the Wright brothers invented their aircraft they received immediate recognition and other inventors and aviators worked hard at inventing a better aircraft. In 1909, Louis Bleriot, a French aviator, flew an aircraft across the English Channel. Bleriot’s plane, unlike the Wright brother’s plane, was a monoplane and closely resembled modern airplanes. The occurrence of WWI halted any further technological developments of the airplane, however...

...CREATIVITY and INNOVATION “My worthiness is all my doubt – His merit – all my fear – Contrasting which my quality does however – appear.” - APJ Abdul Kalam Creativity is necessary for Innovation. Innovativeness is made, not born. Creativity can be inborn or comes in sparks .Creativity is the prerequisite for Innovation. In an essay on Creativity Teresa Amabile and others describe innovation as “the successful implementation of creative ideas within the an organization”Creativity which includes invention is the starting point of innovation , a necessary but not sufficient condition of it. we can never segregate the two terms and it goes hand in hand creativity and innovation are like sparks of the same thunder or lightning-if the fire of creativity is taken up it is innovation, and sometimes the same fire can even destroy the existing creative ideas taking up new ones. According to political scientist and economist Schumpeter(who lived from 1883 to 1950) he says that waves of innovation crash down on established enterprise, washing them away and leaving new ones in their place, seems particularly appropriate. Objectives of the study: 1.Mapping the definitions of innovation and creativity 2.Concept development methods through creativity. 3.Analysis of correlation of creativity and innnovation Business Model This is the sense of innovation in the broader context of companies and markets. Innovation’s meaning here is to alter the landscape.”Ray Meads”: A patentable...

...this society. For example, the function of cleaners is to keep the city clean and tidy; the function of soldiers is to maintain the safety and peace of the society. Maybe they earn less money than those businessmen, but they still work heart and soul on their duties. I believe it is the contributions they make to society that makes them work that hard! Now, let’s take a close look at the scientists. Some of them spend their whole lives inventing new things, exploring the mysterious things and innovating new technology. The scientist, such as Edison, Einstein and Madam Curie, will be shinning like the stars in everyone’s heart! We can say, it is the spirits they have, contributions they have made to all human beings, great findings and inventions they have left to us that makes them giants! Thanks to them, the society is developing faster and faster. Can we say what they do is for the sake of money? Furthermore, if everyone in this society worked only for money, what can it turn out to be? Severe competitions my make people become cold-blooded, force them to use illegal means in order to make profit, or even commit some...

...Organizational innovation “But innovation comes from people meeting up in the hallways or calling each other at 10:30 at night with a new idea, or because they realized something that shoots holes in how we've been thinking about a problem.” So said Steve Jobs when asked about the roots of innovation. One of the most important reasons behind the unprecedented success of Apple has been its constant innovations under the leadership of visionary Steve Jobs, escalated primarily after 1996 when Jobs rejoined the company. Within short time, Apple has become the world's second-largest information technology company by revenue after Samsung Electronics, and the world's third-largest mobile phone maker after Samsung and Nokia. Fortune magazine named Apple the most admired company in the United States in 2008, and in the world from 2008 to 2012. Peter Drucker believed that “Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship, the act that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth.” In its broadest sense, innovation, or the development of new business ideas, is at the core of many successful businesses. Innovative organizations are able to spot and respond to market opportunities. They identify consumer needs, and then develop appropriate products. Innovation need not be revolutionary inventing a brilliant brand new product all the time. Innovation can be evolutionary, a number of small step changes that allow a business to adapt to developing marketplace or economic...

... Otis Boykin By Summer Owens Black history mouth is a time to remember those who have made an impact on others. There are famous poet, inventors, civil rights leaders, and athletes that are celebrated. In my essay I am celebrating the achievements of Otis Boykin. As a inventor, he single handedly changed the world. He truly is a creative inventor that change the further to olden and to new. Otis F. Boykin was born on August 29, 1920, in Dallas, Texas. His mother was a housewife and his father was a carpenter. Boykin graduated from high school, and then he attended Fisk College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1938. After he graduated from college in 1941, Boykin got a job as a laboratory assistant at the Majestic Radio & TV Corporation in Chicago. Otis Boykin did well at his job of testing automatic aircraft controls, and he soon made it to the rank of supervisor. In 1944, Boykin left Majestic and he went to work at the P.J. Nilsen Research Labs in Illinois. He was a research engineer there. Finally, he left the Research Labs and tried out on his own and founded his own company. He named it "Boykin-Fruth Incorporated." Boykin also continued his education at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Working at his company and going to school was difficult, but Boykin managed to handle his busy schedule. Unfortunately, after two years, he couldn't afford to attend college anymore, so he was forced to drop out before his studies were finished. Not being able to finish...

...Intellectual Property Intangible rights protecting the products of human intelligence and creation, such as copyrightable works, patented inventions, Trademarks, and trade secrets. Although largely governed by federal law, state law also governs some aspects of intellectual property. Intellectual property describes a wide variety of property created by musicians, authors, artists, and inventors. The law of intellectual property typically encompasses the areas of Copyright, Patents, and trademark law. It is intended largely to encourage the development of art, science, and information by granting certain property rights to all artists, which include inventors in the arts and the sciences. These rights allow artists to protect themselves from infringement, or the unauthorized use and misuse of their creations. Trademarks and service marks protect distinguishing features (such as names or package designs) that are associated with particular products or services and that indicate commercial source. Patent A patent secures a sole right for a limited period of time to prevent others from using the invention commercially. This sole right represents a key competitive advantage and serves to protect the assets produced by corporate research and development. The actual drafting of a patent application is decisive for the extent of the protection obtained. We possess expertise in all fields of technology. Trademark A trademark often represents a substantial asset and is...

...Electricity is important to life. A vast number of machines which are invented nowadays cannot be operated without it. As a matter of fact, electricity is used mostly in four main areas: industry, public health, media and transportation. First of all, electricity plays an integral part in industry. Thanks to the invention of electricity, a lot of equipment has been invented including computers, subways, bulbs, etc .... .Electricity is the crucial factor in operating most devices. As a matter of fact, we now lighten our lives with electricity, which is unexpensive and friendly-environment. Moreover, electricity has given birth to assembly line, which means everything is produced by machines precisely and constantly, saving us a great amount of time and money. Apparently, electricity is used by all walks of life everyday in all aspects. For example, in summer, air conditions are used to provide us with cool air and we turn on the heating system to keep the room warm in winter. In the second place, electricity is essential in daily transportation. Only with the advent of electricity can people create the traffic light. This is a great contribution to the safety of people on the street. Additionally, because steam engines are now replaced with electric engines, global warming and greenhouse effect are reduced considerably. Obviously, not only the speed is increased but the journey is smoke free, so less pollution are added into the atmostphere, helping to protect the environment...

...Secret, Copyright and Patent, he elucidated the difference between them, the aspects of the IP they address and the related legal rights and issues. He explained us that patent is most used and powerful but for an idea to qualify for patent should comply with three requirements i.e. it should be novel, useful and non-obvious. Getting a patent is way to block others to use, sell or import the IP. Using some examples of the court settlements among different firms, Reed showed us how important role a patent can play in business. Though it is quite efficient, patent has its limits too. It provides right to prevent others from practicing the invention for 20 years but discloses the methods in public. There are also several issues when the IP is related to other IPs that are already patented by others and this holds you from practicing your own invention or process. In addition there are three types of patents; Provisional patent, utility patent and design patent. Reed suggested us some research...

...Necessity is the mother of invention.” This quote is commonly used to explain how another miraculous invention was discovered. Throughout history, many inventions have been created. The Industrial Revolution started in the late 1700s, and since then humankind has been developing at an exponential rate. Truly amazing and useful devices, such as the steam engine and telegraph, were invented. In the last 100 years, many inventions and innovations have been created that make society’s life better, and four devices stand out as the most useful: the jet airplane, the television, the laptop computer, and the cell phone. The first most useful invention is the airplane, invented in 1903 by the Wright brothers. The airplane has transformed not only this society, but also the entire world. Airplanes make it possible to travel long distances in a few hours, whereas before it took days or weeks to travel by horseback. In fact, a plane enables people to travel over high mountains and deep oceans with ease. It is as if the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans were small rivers and the Himalaya and Rocky Mountains were tiny hills to jump over. In addition, with the invention of the plane, the world is smaller because a person can now effortlessly travel from one country to another to work, study, or take vacations. The second most important invention in the last century is the computer, and specifically the laptop computer with an internet connection. The computer was invented in the mid-1900s...

The “clicker” was initially invented for use with TV’s, but now has widespread applications for a host of electronic applications, just like your technology could potentially do. b. The 3-prong power cord for electrical appliances was invented for higher quality appliances. Lower quality appliances have a 2-prong cord, which is a safety issue. Better quality power cords have the 3rd “ground” wire, so now it has widespread application, just like your technology could potentially do. Marketplace The market for your new product (which will use a special technology) is quite saturated with annual growth of only 2%. It is expected that the new technology in this invention will jumpstart sales growth as it will make it far easier to handle and use around the house. You fully expect that once this product’s acceptance is established, the technology can be...

...Getting an Inside Look: Given Imaging’s Camera Pill The factors which makes Iddan, an engineer with no medical background, to pioneer the development of wireless endoscopy are he as an electo-optical engineer and was working on developing the “eye” of guided missile to its target. His friend at boston gave him information about technology used for viewing the interior lining of the digestive system which had lots of limitations, specially with viewing the small intestine. This small intestine causes serious disorders and only in United States approximately 19 million people suffer from disorders. Existing technology like X-ray and endo-scopes were unable to identify or investigate about small intestine. So the only option left was surgery and which was very crucial if the physician does not know which part of the small intestine is affected. So his friend encourages him to come up with better technology. Due to technology revolution after decade small video cameras which uses image sensors like CCDS (Charge coupled devices) has been developed. With his knowledge from developing the eye of guided missile he tried to make small missile like device which could travel through the intestine without a life line leading to the outside of the body and transmit images wirelessly to a receiver outside of the body. He has also done small experiment on chicken with his developed camera and as he succeeds he got more encouragement but he found battery of that camera get exhausted in...

...Ancient Chinese Contributions Elizabeth Finch Professor Karen Lewis HUM 111-World Culture 1 November 26, 2011 Ancient China has played a significant part in many famous inventions that have had a major impact in our lives from day to day. No matter how small they seem to be their inventions have helped us in so many ways that we have taken for granted. How many of us have ever given a thought to those that have made our lives easier by their inventions? There are quite a few from the Ancient Chinese that I was not aware of and was amazed at how many of these we do use in our lives every day and never stop to think where these items were invented. So what are some of the amazing things the Ancient Chinese have invented? 1) Row planting was first planted in the feudal period-6th century BC. This way of planting allows the crops to grow faster and stronger and they also realized that as the wind travels there is less damage in crops planted in rows due to the wind passing through gently. It is also more efficient in watering, weeding and harvesting the crops. (Stevenh) 2) The compass was created in the feudal period-4th century BC and was made of lodestone. The compass was first used by fortune-tellers before it was applied to the cardinal direction. Then the Chinese’s started using the compass to point to the south because they considered south not north their cardinal direction. 3) Gunpowder has been credited to certain Chinese alchemists around 9th century...

...In which industry does P&G compete? Apply Porter’s Five Forces Model to the industry. Is this an attractive industry? P&G is one of the leading companies that are operating in the household consumer product industry. P&G’s threat of substitution is extremely high as there are many companies producing household consumer products, both national and international such as Clorox, Kimberly-Clark and Colgate-Palmolive CL. Also, P&G is also competing with retailers private label brands such as Walmart’s Great Value. Because the consumer’s switching costs between products are low, the quality, price, brand loyalty and differentiation of a product is very important in influencing consumer’s purchasing decision. The barrier to entry of an average incumbent firm for this industry is relatively low. This is because the capital investment that is needed to enter this industry is relatively low. However, because of the extremely high competition and also the existence of very established companies such as a P&G, it is very hard for a new entry to be as big as current products. This is because these companies have been able to capture a large market share over the years of their existence as well as able to create brand loyalty among their customers. Therefore, for a new firm to be successful, they would have to invest a lot in research and development to be able to produce a differentiated product. The threat of substitutes for this industry is low because most of the...
