When one’s self-fulfillment comes from the actions an individual takes to help others to feed his or her own ego rather than out of love, they end up hurting others and themselves. This statement is most clearly demonstrated by the actions of the protagonist, Brother, in the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. Initially, Brother isn’t fond of his younger sibling and is often antagonistic towards him because he has a disability and is incapable of being a “true brother” in Brother’s eyes. However, as he begins to understand and grow closer to his younger brother (whom he renames Doodle), he decides to teach him to walk.
