...Scope: In this lab we studied Buckling. Buckling is one type of failure mode which is related to stability. Buckling is the result of axial compression resulting in a lateral deflection. In this experiment five steal columns with different lengths 25-5 “in” are being under axial compression forming buckling. Buckling can occur in any compressive structure and should always be considered in design. Significance: Columns are one type of the commonly used structure in bridges and building to support. However whenever these columns are compressed with axial load, they tend to buckle. The shorter the column the better it is when it comes to buckling. Longer columns tend to bulk faster and under a lower load. An extensive buckling may results into a fracture. Engineers prefer to use columns due to their lightweight and high strength, however, buckling is an important failure to look at whenever there is any structure with an axial load applied on it. Apparatus Required: Tools and materials used in this experiment are: 1. Baldwin Universal Testing Machine with 60, 0000 lb. capacity 2. Ruler. 3. Micrometer or Caliper. 4. ...The fuselage is the main body to which all parts are connected and subjected to take bending load, torsion load, tensile load, compression load and shear load. Frames and stringers is the basic skeleton of the fuselage which gives major support. Frames give the fuselage its cross-sectional shape and prevent it from buckling, when it is subjected to bending loads. Stringers give a large increase in the stiffness of the skin under torsion and bending loads, with minimal increase in weight. Other than that, fuselage must be able to resist bending moments caused by weight and lift from the tail, torsion loads caused by fin and rudder. Pressurization can lead to tension or compression of the floor-supports as well. The structural strength and stiffness of the fuselage must be high enough to withstand these loads. According to the British Civil Airworthiness Requirement, safety factor of at least 1.5 times the normal working load for aircraft fuselage structure must be used. Failure is catastrophic, the limit load occurs during every flight and the fuselage is not only subject to pressurization forces. The static strength of the fuselage therefore incorporates a larger safety factor. A reduced factor of safety from the stated factor will preclude failure due to creep and provide adequate protection against tear propagation. Background: A 62-year-old female with no history of eye complications that was diagnosed with Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in the right eye after a traumatic fall. Differential Diagnosis: Retinal Tear, Tractional retinal detachment, In exudative detachment Treatment: Scleral buckling surgery to fix the detachment. Uniqueness: No history of eye problems. The detachment happened after a traumatic fall. The individual also suffered from a humerus fracture and a serve concussion. Conclusion: Most Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment’s do not happen from traumatic events. The patient did not have symptoms of the detachment until a month after the fall. The concussion was diagnosed but no other tests were done for the individuals’ eyes. Those should have been checked to prevent the medical emergency. Body: A rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurs due to a break in the retina that allows fluid to pass from the vitreous space into the subretinal space between the sensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium.3 A minority of retinal detachments result from trauma, including blunt blows to the orbit, penetrating trauma, and concussions to the head.
