...communications skills are very strong in some areas and could use some work in other areas. It is my opinion that many factors in life can help or hinder the way you communicate your needs, wants, emotions and thoughts. Many feel that by expressing their opinions or emotions others will portray them as being weak or overbearing and in some cases if a different approach of communication was taken, these expressions will have been perceived differently. Through my studies I have found that I am a very active listener with tendencies to be passive and can work at being more efficient in communicating my emotions in a productive manner. “Your personal success and happiness depend largely on your effectiveness as an interpersonal communicator.” (Devito, 2016) My communications skills are very strong when it comes to listening to others, being a lending ear and encouraging others to have open lines of communication. ...Abstract This essay will put into perspective what many believe are the qualities of an effective leader. But what is a leader? What is leadership? Is it the person who is loud and outspoken, or the calm and quiet professional? Are good leaders made or are they born with these qualities. The image that pops into an individual’s mind when leadership is brought up, is a strong and confident person who knows the right answer to all the question. This leader provides clear guidance, vision and handles any situation with calm and ease. Many believe that in order to be a good leader you must have three main qualities, which are: Be, Know, and Do. Leadership The US Army states that leadership is defined as “The process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” ("Army leadership," 2008). So as long as someone can direct someone to do something by barking out how to do it and yelling at them is sufficient to have the qualities of good leadership. Not really, being a good leader and leading people to accomplish the task is very complicated. Everyone has different backgrounds and are born and raised with different morals, norms, values and beliefs. How to lead one person to complete a certain task is not the same way you would lead another person to accomplish that same task. Leadership is certain qualities that is ever moving and changing by the minute and must...

...White, Michael 03 FEB 2014 An Effective Leader All though-out history we have seen countless leaders in history books, movies leading men into war, running countries or on the local city council. Anybody can be a leader but few can be a good leader, there is not a formula of what a good leader consists of because it is found in a variety of leadership styles, but in these varying types of leadership styles you will find a set amount of traits that each leader possesses confidence, integrity, communication, interpersonal tact, and most importantly the ability to get results. `A leader must be confident in all aspects from making decisions to speaking to your platoon, the ability to be confident in your leadership ability will pay dividends in earning the command and respect of your troops. Having confidence in yourself as a leader will enable you to make better decisions rather than second guessing yourself and being timid. In the military where failure is never an option being confident in your leadership style is up most important. The integrity of a leader will determine how long he will be in power as a leader. A leader without integrity does not have the trust of his soldiers which creates weak links in platoon. Without integrity amongst soldiers, there is not trust, and how can one expect a soldier to fight and die with and for their brothers if they do not trust one another. The Army values integrity so highly that it is one of the Army’s values for all soldiers...

...Mind. Gardner thought of intelligence as the ability to solve problems. He believed that intelligence could be broken down into eight different types, and that even though we use all of these intelligences we tend to be stronger at some than others. In the development of his theory, he first wanted to set up a criterion to help him determine what would be worthy of being called intelligence. He then came up with seven intelligences: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Musical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Spatial, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. He later added an eighth intelligence in 1999 which he referred to as Naturalistic Intelligence. The first two of these intelligences are typically seen in our school systems, the next three are usually tied to the artsier types of intelligences, and the final two Howard Gardner attributes to the personal Intelligences. The three of these that impacts my life the most are Logical Mathematical, Bodily Kinesthetic, and Interpersonal Intelligences. Logical-Mathematical intelligence has to do with the ability to understand and carry out complex mathematical functions with ease, analyze problems logically, and investigate issues from a scientific standpoint (Smith, 2008). It is often assumed that people with this kind of intelligence will naturally do well in things that involve logical or numerical activities such as mathematics, but this intelligence actually has more to do with a person’s scientific thinking, reasoning capabilities, solving...

...what communication involves, however, most people lack true communication skills. Communication involves transferring information from one person or a group to others. Information is delivered in different forms such as terms or words, symbols, figures or numbers, a single concept, or sets of concepts combined (Baack, 2012). We do not just speak words when we communicate; we create meanings as we figure out what each other’s words and actions stand for, represent, or imply (Ramaraju, 2012). Communication is described by Baack (2012) as “transmitting, receiving, and processing information.” Real communication occurs when all three elements of communication take place. In business, communication skills are critical to organizations, so that they can compete nationally and in the global market and their goals are met to become successfully. This paper will describe interpersonal communication and global communication, which include the norms of communication, barriers of communication, verbal and nonverbal communication, written communication, methods of leading groups and techniques of handling group conflicts and effective approaches to giving presentations that affect every element within the organization for quality communication. Macik-Frey’s (2007) study on the relationship of interpersonal communication competence to transformational leadership and emotional intelligence found that “interpersonal communication competence is essential in the realization of effective leadership...

Conclusion Effective Communication Have you ever seen, heard, or witnessed an individual giving a speech or speaking in front of an audience? What did you think? Did they influence you with their choice of words? Did they communicate in a way in which you understood the information that was presented? Now, think about those in which communication skills were lacking? Big difference, right? Communication is always present, whether it’s through verbal or non-verbal communication. Communication is always being analyzed. We as audience observe this in our everyday lives and see the importance of an effective communicator. To me, an effective communicator must first be confident. Confidence goes a long way and is shown through our self-concept. Our “Self-concept and self-esteem are the two perceptions of self that have the greatest impact on how we communicate” (Verderber, Verderber, Sellnow 17). Along with this, you need...

Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) is Military Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program for the United States Army that is overseen by senior enlisted military advisors and ran by junior enlisted soldiers with the funding of the MWR program ("Better opportunities for," 2004). The goal of the program is to ensure a high quality of life for the single soldiers of the Army through volunteerism, recreation activities, and improved living standards. Its organizational structure (See Figure 1.1) consists of a web of teams of representatives. Each unit has a representative. This forms a Battalion BOSS program which has an additional junior leader chosen by the Command Sergeant Major (CSM) of each specific Battalion (BN). Next each BN Representative then reports to the Brigade (BDE) Representative who is chosen by that respective CSM. ...a speech in 1962, spoke to the soldiers about what he had learned about his military service in his long career of fifty years and two world wars: "Your mission is to win our wars. You have been trained to fight. Yours is the profession of arms, the will to win, the sure knowledge that in war there is no substitute for victory, that if you lose, the nation will be destroyed. " That desire to fulfill the mission against all adversities that may arise is what is called "warrior ethic" and is what differentiates the military profession from any other. If this were not enough reason for a military leader at best, be added that his subordinates deserve nothing less. This reference manual United States Army was created in order that staff can prepare for this great responsibility. The ideas presented in the book are the result of two centuries of experience and wisdom, guided by continuous learning through practice and the need to respond to an ever-changing and challenging. Leadership is not about rank or stars on the uniform, but of responsibility and mission accomplishment. Therefore, the principles outlined in the Reference Manual U.S. Army Leadership (The U.S. Army Leadership Field Manual) provide a framework which can support the leaders of any rank and any organization. It is a framework that is based on timeless values and reflects the principle of BE, KNOW, DO that has accompanied the U.S. military over time, in good times and bad times, in peace and in war. While the leadership...
