...in patients. As a result, it is used during the day to stimulate in patients who have eating disorders and anorexia. Similarly, marijuana contains cannabinoids, which have considerable analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, antitumor properties, and anticancer properties. These properties enable its use in the treatment of lung and breast cancer. The anti-cancer property results from the availability of cannabidiol in the marijuana plant: the anti-cancer agent that does not induce euphoria. Medically, Marijuana has also been found to alleviate certain signs of spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis by showing muscle-relaxant and antispasmodic effects. Modern research has revealed that cannabis is a useful help in the treatment of a various clinical applications. These include pain relief, like in the case of neuropathic pain, glaucoma, nausea, spasticity and movement disorders. Recently, the frequent marijuana use was connected with better glucose control. Researchers have found out that the existing diabetes patients who use marijuana have notably low levels of fasting insulin and are more insulin non-resistant than those diabetes patients who are marijuana non-users . Today, a number of governments, including the United States government, permit treatment with one or more exact low doses of synthetic cannabinoids to treat one or more medical problems. Similarly, many international health organizations located in...

...Spiegel Psychology Today Abstract Dr. Jeremy Spiegel talks about using medical marijuana as a treatment for psychiatric disorders on the podcast Optimal Living. Dr. Spiegel begins with a general defense of medical marijuana. According to Dr. Spiegel marijuana has not been studied as a treatment due to political factors and beliefs that modern doctors have today; and adds with his own opinion: “ridiculous as it sounds, is like a scientist shunning a particular chemical system in the body for reasons that have nothing to do with science.”(@). Marijuana in this society has been seen and used recreationally, and because of this it keeps it out of place for medical treatment. What many do not know it that our body has its own natural cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors which form the endocannabinoid system; this system regulates or mood, memory, appetite and pain sensation and marijuana enhances these present processes in our body. Dr. Spiegel then mentions two patient cases of his that he encountered over the past year and both patients have used medical marijuana to treat their disorders. The first case is about a young man living in Boston who suffered from a cancerous tumor in a place where there was no hope of removing surgically. His physicians dismissed the idea of using marijuana as medicine and were blind to the idea of using marijuana to improve his diminished appetite, chronic nausea, unbearable pain and even the will to live. The second case is about a patient who was diagnosed...

This is incorrect; this source uses over 50 other sources, the majority of which I was not able to visit. So, I simply put down that they came from the NORML website. The endnotes are on that website if you would like to look. Meghan Wyandt Marijuana: Decriminalization for Medical Use Outline 1. Introduction a. "Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against the possession of marijuana in private for personal use." -President Jimmy Carter: Message to Congress, August 2, 1977 i. Marijuana has been illegal in the United States since 1937. 2. Paragraph one: Present the Problem b. What is the problem? ii. Legal prescription drugs do not always offer relief to patients dealing with serious illnesses. Natural Cannabis has been proven in many clinical studies to offer relief from nausea, tremors, and chronic pain in sufferers. However, the Federal government completely prohibits the use of marijuana in the United States, for sale or for personal use, including medicinal relief. c. What caused it? iii. The criminalization of marijuana came about after its recognition as an intoxicant in the 1920s and 1930s. During this time, exaggerated accounts of violent crimes allegedly committed...

...cannabis. Cannabis is a genus of plants with flowers, and also has a few different species; cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. Cannabis contains different cannabinoids to which over 85 of the known are active cannabinoids, and the two most common are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and Cannabidiol (CBD). While other known cannabinoids such as Cannabigerol (CBG), Cannabinol (CBN), and Tretrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) are known their studies are not as prevalent as THC, and CBD. THC is a psychoactive ingredient which puts you in an altered state of conscious when consumed in moderate to high doses. While THC is psychoactive it does not make you hallucinate as other known drugs such as LSD, and ‘magic’ mushrooms are known for. However, THC is known for changing your appetite and your taste which makes it a good medication for people who have issues with consuming food such as cancer patients. THC is also used for pain management in multiple sclerosis. The negative side of consuming THC is that it is known to create short-term memory loss in users. CBD on the other hand, while being an active ingredient, is actually an anti-psychotic. This form of cannabinoid is better off ingested through edibles, or a concentrate that’s placed in the mouth with a dropper. This form of cannabinoid is used for mental...

...Herbal Supplements The FDA should regulate herbal supplements as it ensures safety for the consumer. If taken properly, herbal supplements have great benefits. The problem is that there simply is not enough regulation of the herbal supplements. Many herbal supplements can be dangerous if taken incorrectly. What’s worse, people simply do not have enough information about the benefits and risks of herbal supplements. A great example of the lack of regulation is overuse of Ephedra. A while back, people started taking mass amounts of Ephedra in order to lose weight. It ended in a great amount of deaths, causing the FDA to take measures against makers of medicines containing Ephedra. Because it was considered an herbal supplement, it did not have the same scrutiny as synthetic drugs. Herbal supplements can be just as powerful as synthetic drugs, so the same vigilance in regulation should apply. Also, harmful ingredients sometimes end up in herbal supplements, which present an entirely new risk. If herbal supplements were more closely monitored, there would be a better chance of preventing this from happening. Because of the lack of regulation, consumers do not have any assurance that what they are buying is safe. Consumers need that assurance, especially when it comes to health products. There also is not very much awareness about herbal supplements. People do not realize how powerful some herbal supplements are. Many people hold the mistaken belief that herbal supplements...

...the drug is to increase the appetite of those who are having difficulty eating due to their condition or due to treatment of a condition. HIV/AIDS is a common illness that responds well to Marinol treatment. It is also useful for some patients who are fighting cancer and need to go through chemotherapy treatment. Since Marinol prevents severe weight loss it can help increase the survival rate of some illnesses and conditions that are responsible for appetite and weight loss. This drug has been used successfully to treat people with the following: Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, Spinal Cord Injuries, Glaucoma, Eating disorders (themarinol.com). The pharmacological actions of THC result from its partial agonist activity at the cannabinoid receptor CB1, located mainly in the central nervous system, and the CB2 receptor, mainly expressed in cells of the immune system (Pertwee). THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects, and cannabis can be used to treat pain by altering transmitter release on dorsal root ganglion...

...THE ANATOMY OF MARIJUANA Marijuana is the dried flowers, leaves and stems of the Cannabis sativa plant. Amazing how just leaves can alter the mind. Weed is normally a green, brown, or gray color. The main active ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta 9 tetrhydrocannabinol). THC binds to specific receptors in the brain called cannabinoid receptors. THC looks for these receptors and brain cells. Therefore marijuana mostly affects the parts of the brain that have the highest concentrations of cannabinoid receptors which are the hippocampus, the cerebellum, the basal ganglia, and the cerebral cortex. When you smoke weed, you have a difficult time learning which is because the hippocampus plays a major role in learning. This overall reaction right here gives you the high that you desire when you smoke weed. WHAT IS THE CONCRETE PURPOSE Smoking weed can relax someone and get them in a good mood. People also become drowsy, feel a sense of euphoria, and if someone is hungry they will smoke before they eat that way they get “the munchies”. Some people smoke a lot in order to feel more hallucinations. But as I said most people smoke weed because they want that high. THE MANY WAYS OF USING MARIJUANA Marijuana is most commonly smoked. Some ways you can smoke weed is in a bong, pipe, or in a joint. A bong is basically a water pipe and a joint is basically a cigarette filled with only weed. You can smoke it in a blunt which is a cigar that does not have tobacco in it, it is filled...

...metabolic pathways, gently nudging our system towards homeostasis. This kind of “multitasking” makes cannabis impossible to evaluate, according to the pharma industry. But multitasking avoids the unbalanced distortion of solitary metabolic pathways as produced by synthetic, single-ingredient silver bullets such as Virox. Cannabis list of ingredients: THC – Tetrahydrocannabiol is a “new” molecule that evolved within the past 34 million years. Botanists speculate that it evolved as a toxin to deter herbivores, but this evolutionary strategy was diverted when THC became attractive to humans. THC works in humans by mimicking an endogenous compound that our own bodies make, called anandamide, it binds to anandamide's receptors called cannabinoid (CB) receptors....

...Wr-121 2:00 p.m. Rise with Red Eyes Marijuana has been unjustly criticized for the past century. In the 1950s, the U.S. Congress was advised that marijuana incited, “many of our most sadistic, terrible, crimes… such as sex slayings” (Manderson 1). I myself have chosen to experiment with this allegedly vicious substance and have never had any deliberation of committing anything resembling a “sex slaying”. Possibly a slaying of a 1-pound bag of Doritos and a 12 pack of grape soda, hardly something I would categorize as “sadistic”. Nonetheless our government still refuses to acknowledge the undeniable benefits of marijuana. James Masin, the head of the United States Public Health Service, said that we should not give AIDS patients marijuana to help with their debilitating symptoms because, crazed by the high, they would be much more likely to engage in unsafe sex (Manderson 2). This quote is not only frivolous; it also holds no medical evidence to support such an outlandish claim. There has been no reputable scientific study that suggests marijuana causes it’s users to become sex-crazed maniacs that will do anything to pleasure their id personality. I was under the assumption that our government was in a position of power to create laws and regulations for the benefit of the country based on non-biased facts. I was obviously mistaken. Marijuana can be used in many functional and valuable ways. Thirteen states have legalized the use of medicinal marijuana. A...

...drugs to treat seizure disorders Melissa M. Phillips COM/172 April 21, 2014 Scott Tobias Cannabis verses pharmaceutical drugs to treat seizure disorders. Chronic illnesses are prevalent this day and age due to various environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and the use of pharmaceutical drugs. There are various pharmaceutical drugs to treat patients who have chronic pain, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's, cancer, and various seizure disorders. However, the effects of pharmaceutical drugs on people’s major organs are devastating. Cannabis is a much safer, 100% natural approach to treating chronic illnesses and it is not damaging to peoples organs. In fact, the human body has built in cannabinoid receptors in the brain and the spleen, and our bodies actually create our own cannabinoid proteins, which contains no psychoactive component. Therefore, the human body creates its own cannabis. Personally, being through what I have been through with my chronic illness; Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), and the numerous amounts of pharmaceutical drugs I have been prescribed. I have had severe allergic reactions to various pharmaceutical drugs, a medication induced seizure, and could have possibly overdosed due to the wrong amount of medication being prescribed. Given my current situation and my new perspective on consuming something that has been on this planet for millions of years (holistic ancient medicine), or consuming something fabricated in a laboratory. I prefer...

...eng2 Rain Oddo Mrs .Conway The u.s should legalize recreational marijuana Is marijuana safer than alcohol? Marijuana is not a lethal drug, which means it is not toxic to humans, overdoses are nearly impossible and is not as addictive as tobacco or alcohol. Legalizing marijuana would have a beneficial impact on the U.S. Marijuana has been illegal for less than 1% of the time that it’s been in use. Legalizing marijuana also would cut taxes. Also legalizing it would get rid of government waste. The U.S should legalize recreational marijuana because marijuana is too expensive for the justice system and should be taxed. In the High Times article they state that, “Law enforcement has more important responsibilities than arresting 750,000 individuals a year for marijuana possession.” Statistics do show that the people arrested for marijuana, 90% of it is just for possession. This is unfair because people are not selling it, they are not criminals, and they are just smoking it for their own use. They also state, “Marijuana arrests make Justice more expensive and less efficient in the U.S…” It is expensive because the government is spending all this money on court cases for just smoking pot and wasting jail space on basically innocent people. The High Times article also states, “Furthermore, taxation of Marijuana can provide needed generous funding of many important criminal Justice programs.” A Harvard study estimates that legalizing recreational marijuana...

...Drugs: Ecstasy and Marijuana Isabelle Balderas San Jose State University Ecstasy has been abused in many different ways since its inception in the 1970s. It was first used in guidance to help with psychotherapy, without evidence of supported research and FDA approval, until 1985 when the DEA classified ecstasy as a Schedule 1 Substance, which is a drug with a risk of excessive abuse and has no proof of being used medicinally (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2013). Ecstasy is taken orally and can either be in the form of a capsule or tablet. Origins of abuse of ecstasy are said to have been by young adults and teenagers at house parties in the Netherlands; furthermore, the popularity of the drug rose over time and eventually became a trend in the rave/all-night party scene. Today, young adults and adolescent teenagers mainly abuse ecstasy to have fun at nightclubs, raves, and/or rock concerts. It has been reported that 1.5% (roughly 3.4 million) of Americans at least the age of 12 have tried ecstasy at least once in their life; unfortunately, a considerable amount of abuse, 5% or 1.4 million people, was found in Americans between the ages of 18 and 25. Some people use ecstasy for therapeutic reasons, such as adrenergic uptake inhibitors, hallucinogens, and serotonin agents, to feel euphoric, empathetic, and an increase in energy (National Institutes of Health, 2008). Shockingly, others even combine ecstasy with other drugs to heighten the effects and make them last longer:...

...Overcoming Obstacle One of the most challenging obstacles I have had to overcome was learning a second language. To be successful I established two specific few goals to help guide me in the right direction. First, and I feel the most important goal, was to speak the language at all times. The second goal I made was to read the language whenever possible. Speaking the language was the most important goal to me because the act of speaking words helped ingrain those words and their definitions into memory. I always carried a dictionary/translator with me so I could look up words I did not know. In the beginning, not having a proper core knowledge of the language made this goal extremely difficult. As time progressed, however, I realized that it was becoming easier and easier to not only speak, but I required less time to think of what I was trying to say. Reading the language was another important goal to help me learn a second language. Reading the language was very helpful for increasing my vocabulary. I would always read out loud while working on this goal, which in turn also helped me achieve the first goal, as well. As I did with speaking the language, I kept a dictionary close by as to look up the words I did not know. Again as time went on, I noticed that the frequency of having to look up words began to decrease. Having to learn a second language is a difficult task to accomplish. The setting of goals was crucial to the success of my accomplishment...
