...and 5 Evaluate the purpose of different types of career guidance interviews Evaluate methodologies to explore the career guidance and development needs of clients Corney and Watts (1998) define information and advice as; ‘providing an immediate response to the needs of clients who present an enquiry or reveal a need that requires more than a straightforward information response. Advice is usually limited to helping with the interpretation of information and with meeting needs already clearly understood by the client…’ Advice and information is therefore concerned with meeting client’s presenting issues relating to information. The OECD (2004:10) definition of guidance is; ‘Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals of any age, and at any point of their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers’. This reflects the variety of activities that may take place in supporting clients to move forward. Guidance is about helping clients to understand their own needs, set and review career goals, understand any barriers and to produce action plans. Hambly (2008; 16) refers to the iceberg analogy to explain the process of guidance. The top of the iceberg represents the clarifying and meeting of presented needs which is advice and information and the bottom of the iceberg is about exploring additional needs which is guidance. The guidance element may be about exploring high leverage issues...

...Career Guidance Theories Career guidance theories provide insight into how individuals make career decisions and what influences impact on those decisions throughout the course of a person’s life. Most have derived from the different branches of psychology; personality, developmental, cognitive and social. More contemporary theories however consider the sociological influences on career journeys too. Most acknowledge the role of career guidance, although differ on opinion as to when, how often and the resulting impact of guidance. Career guidance practice is informed by theory. Theories are used to devise policies over careers education and guidance and to provide tools for evaluation and amendment of practices. In 1908 Parsons developed what is considered the first theory of vocational guidance. The ‘talent matching’ approach. Parsons based this theory on three ideas; (a) people are different, (b) jobs are different and (c) by studying both individual and jobs, it should be possible to match them up. This theory implies it is possible to measure individual talents and the skills required for particular jobs, assumes people perform best when matched to a job suited to their abilities and therefore assumes that career decision making is of a rational nature. Others have developed this theory, sometimes referred to as ‘person-environment fit’ or trait/factor further. Rodger (1952) developed a ‘seven point plan’ with matching at the centre of the process. He...

...recorded on the front of the Candidate Record Forms. Task Choices The most frequently attempted tasks were those based on Tourism (35% of work seen), Water on the Land (32%), the Coastal Zone (12%), Changing Urban Environments (7%) and the Living World (6%). Centres successfully contextualised the chosen task so that their candidates were able to produce valid investigations. There were some instances of centres attempting a task from the incorrect year of submission or deviating from the task, although not to a degree that invalidated the work produced. The Investigations Many investigations exceeded the guidance of 2000 words and some were far too long. This was particularly evident where very able candidates had access to ICT for the majority, or all, of the time allowed for the task. Centres are advised to ensure that all of their candidates keep to the guidance of 2000 words. Shorter and more succinct pieces of work tend to be more tightly focused, they are easier for centres to mark and they are more manageable from the candidates’ perspective. The more concise style has led, in some instances, to higher quality writing and more attention to detail. It has also been found that candidates who have produced excessively lengthy...

Not only did she carry me for nine months but she continues to support and love me regardless of what I have put her through to bring me up. So far my mother has the greatest impact in my life. Many people have come and passed but she keeps by my side helping and advising me on all the important values of a good life. My mother runs several successful businesses and is able to juggle between her business and taking care of us. This is something I can only hope to have. My mother and I are close and I normally go to her for advice. She has taught me a lot and has helped me become a better person in life. She is intelligent and knows the solution to almost any problems I seek advice for. I have seen her struggle day to day to ensure we are all ok while still managing to run her demanding businesses. Interests are of course, very personal, and two people may be interested in the same activity for quite different reasons. A chess player might relish the company, the intellectual challenge, the competition, the elements of psychological warfare. So what do you mean by ‘interesting’? Think of a couple of activities - work, study or leisure that you have enjoyed. 1 2 What interested you? · Mental stimulation? · Using your abilities? · Sense of achievement? · Excitement? · What else? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...would be a good thing to fill those hours between the time my son when to bed and the time I went to bed. Do not get me wrong I always had wanted to go to college but my ex-husband had always told me I did not need to because he was there to provide for our family. Since I have been in school for 9 weeks I see it is so much more than just filling a void, it is so much more that taking up a few hours in the evening. It is a real commitment and well worth it. Completing a degree in higher education opens so many doors for a person. It will allow me to gain the knowledge and skills I need to advance in a career that I will enjoy and be able to grow in over the years. Notice I said career and not job because that is what I will have is a career. Right now without a degree, all I have is a job. There is no stability in a job but there is stability in a career. I think the value of a degree is priceless. I know grade school and high school were mandatory, but college was a choice. It was a choice I made, and when I am finish I get to say “Look at what I have accomplished!” I climbed this mountain, made it over, and I succeeded, and that is worth its weight in gold! That degree has just paved the way to a better future. The assessments in this course showed me what kind of a learner I am (kinesthetic) and then some of our readings supplied tips to help with that certain learning style. Like in Week 3, “Study Strategies by Learning Style said...

...Building a career plan is difficult, if people have no clue what career field interest them, what is the person strength and weaknesses, and if the person posse the passion for a certain career. Working on my competencies section, I have identified my strengths. If I have to categorize myself with the results, I will say my top three is adapting to change, strategizing, and innovating. To be a high-quality manager or a leader, they must be willing to accept changes. Since, not all work environments are the same. Adjusting to change will make a person realize what works and what does not work. At the same time strategizing and innovative is critical to managers. For a company to raise profit or cut spending, it requires strategizing because without a road map a person may not be able to find the final destination. An innovative person who thinks outside the box usually performs at a higher level. Creative and innovative thinkers stand out in front of their peers and will be successful in their careers. Conducting the exercise, I understand how competencies relate to one another and identify my strength and weakness. If I change my communication techniques to be an effective communicator, I will ensure to disseminate information at the lowest level and use back brief technique. This will mitigate miscommunication among the staff and I will use this technique to check on my staff. To complete assigned task in a timely manner, I will need to ensure that my staff understands...

...Vocational/Career Self Assessment It is essential for individuals to discover what careers fit their personal desires and personality traits. Through the use of assessments, individuals are able to establish what vocational areas they are remarkable in and which areas they should steer clear from. Assessments are one of the major components of career counseling and it is essential all counselors are competent in implementing and interpreting assessment scores (Amir, Gati, & Kleiman, 2008). As a future counselor, it is essential I am able to complete career assessments and gain my own personal insight of the results. In this paper, I will discuss the results and insights from the Self Directed Search Assessment and the SWOT assessment. Self-Assessment Results The first assessment I completed was the Self Directed Search, influenced by John Holland. The assessment was formed to investigate whether individual’s personality traits could fit into a specific type of working environment (Holland, Powell, & Fritzsche, 1994). The assessment is devised of six characteristics, however only three types will be generated based on the test takers answers (Holland, Powell, & Fritzsche, 1994). My findings from the Self Directed Search...

...Content: Page Number Answer 3 Appendix 6 Refences 7 Career theory has begun since the early 20th century. As the changing nature of world, career theory experiences major transition from time to time to achieve an applicable theory. This essay will discuss and analyse the literature about career theory in the early 21st Century. Sonnenfeld (1982) has described career theory as theory which attempts to explain occupational variables such as type of job and income or psychological variables such as job satisfaction and job-related stress. Career development began from Frank Parsons’ work where he predicts a person’s career choices from the his characteristics, including self-knowledge, career planning and “true reasoning”(Patton et al, 2006). Later, several aptitude tests were used in the assessment of unemployed workers which led to the development of trait-factor approaches. Fitzgerald (1992) suggested that the trait-factor approach can be attributed to the combination of Parsons matching models with the concepts and technology of individual differences. As consequences, trait-factor theory implies on the match or fit between individual’s characteristics and work environment , emphasizing on the relationship between knowledge about self and knowledge about environment (Betz, 1989). Collin (1986) has argued that the major thrust in career theory has centred on individual rather than on contextual factors. However, Holland’s (1959) research...
