...Open Carry Gun Laws By Ryan Hanson In this research paper we will attempt to answer the question, what is “OPEN CARRY”? And the laws and regulations that pertain to open carry, as well as what they mean to you should you decide to purchase a firearm or if you already own one. Open carry is defined as the practice of openly carrying a fire arm on one’s person in public, many people living in the United States already do and this also scares many others. There are a few questions that come to mind when discussing open carry laws such as Who? What? Where? When? Why? And How? When talking about open carry laws, you have to think of who around you that you may or may not know owns firearms? In most states anyone 18 or older may purchase shotguns, and you must be 21 to purchase high powered rifles and pistols or revolvers and all it takes is a simple background check and you’re in and out the door in 20 minutes or less although many people prefer private sales to avoid the background check process and this arises some concern, what kind of people are out buying guns? With an estimated 300 million privately owned guns in the U.S. it’s safe to say that most of the people you know own or at one time or another have owned a firearm. That being said you have to kind of think to yourself with all of the burglaries and such that go on in our country how many of those 300 million firearms are out on the streets in the hands of criminals and that’s scary if you think about the numbers...

...[Type the company name] | Concealed Carry Controversy | [Type the document subtitle] | | Steven Kilburg | EN 104-8F | rough draft | As of November 1, 2011 a new law went into effect in the State of Wisconsin. It is the concealed carry law. There are people on both sides for or against this new law. The few things about this law that bothers this writer is the absence of proper training prior to obtaining a permit; the difference in the new law compared to hunter safety education that is required for all hunters born after January 1, 1973, and certain loopholes in the law that make it harder to be considered a real conceal carry law. According to the law, a person is to complete a firearms safety course conducted by a certified firearms instructor. However, the law does not specify what constitutes a safety course; someone could sit through an online training course, including courses not designed for concealed carry purposes. (Wisconsin's New Carrying Concealed Weapon Law Wuestions and Answers, 2011) These permitted people don’t even have to fire their weapon as a part of their training. This is unsatisfactory to many people; just the thought alone that people can get a permit to carry a firearm without even knowing how to use the weapon is mind-blowing. I would feel safer with my son, who is ten, but has fired and understands gun safety than I would with an adult who has never fired or received my belief in proper training. This law needs to be looked...

Concealed Carry on Campus: Yea or Nay? 3 In the war over guns, the first casualty was the truth (Kleck, 2009). Could the results of the tragedies at Columbine, Virginia Tech, and the private college in California been lessened if concealed weapons were permitted on campuses? Studies have been conducted, but there have been no definitive results. Each side of this question can quote statistics and studies that will prove their point of view. There is no absolute answer to this question, but many people believe that the outcome may have been much different if concealed weapons were present on campus. As with every issue of this magnitude, there are two sides to this question. The debate about whether to allow concealed weapons on campus raises questions of personal safety, legality and are gun-free zones really safer. ...I think the open carry law should be allowed because if you are carrying a handgun, somebody attacks you, and you shoot them then you are stopping crime at its peek. The open carry law of Texas states that you are allowed carry any handgun as long as you have a license, but the handgun must be carried in a shoulder or belt holster, and you must be 21 years of age or older to get a license. This means handguns will be in the hands of an adult, and not a kid which is one good thing. Another good thing about the open carry law of Texas is that if someone sees that a store is getting robbed then that person can stop the robber with his handgun from stealing from the store. That way the other people that was in the store is safe from the robber,...

...Concealed Carry Helps Protect the Nation Why would a person want to carry a gun around with them while going about their daily routines? A 2001 study done by Tom smith at the NORC found that 59% of people carry weapons with them while away from home, simply because it makes them feel safer and they achieve a sense of security. Though this is not a big surprise, since there is little other reason for concealed carry to even take place. Now people ask does it actually make you safer, and in fact yes it does. Concealed carry not only has dropped rates of domestic violence by the thousands, but has also managed to have a large effect on the frequencies of mass shootings and the overall safety of the person in charge of the hidden weapon. In addition to this, it also helps to deter crime as a whole....

...Being able to carry a gun openly means that a person is able to carry an unconcealed weapon. This open carry gun law is a new law being applied in several states. This handgun law varies state to state. Thirty one states allow open carry without any permit or license, but fifteen states require some form of permit or license. Open carry is a fresh topic that promotes a tremendous amount of controversy. Open carry should be allowed because it is a constitutional right, it provides protection, and allows others to be protected by those carrying. First of all, bearing arms is a constitutional right. The second amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees the right of every American citizen to keep and bear arms. This means that every registered citizen of the United States of America can keep guns in their house or on their person. With this constitutional right, it is a person’s choice whether they want to carry a gun or not. If a citizen of the United States wants to have a gun and carry it on their person, that person has the constitutional right to do so. On the other hand, if a person does not want a gun, they have the right to not carry or own a gun at all. The second amendment is a very arguable subject...

...Many are in agreement or disagreement on allowing student carrying guns on campus. Although Guns shouldn’t be allowed on campus because a campus is considered a safe zone. The state of Texas is considering about having concealed or open carry weapons on campus but many believe it’s a great thing but in reality it’s not due to the fact that It is very rare for a shooting to happen on campus, people with guns around campus can easily escalate, and student will feel unsecure. Over the years it has shown that a campus or university is very safe due to it being a gun free zone. Also it is rare for a shooting to happen on a campus. The reason why it’s rare is because students aren’t allowed to carry weapons around the campus zone. Although there might not be a lot of securities around but having many students in a facility it is hard for them to carry a weapon without going unnoticed. It’s also safe knowing that students that attends college are known to be good students due to the...

...My Case for Conceal and Carry In the United States and elsewhere, there are a variety of laws surrounding if a person can carry a firearm on their person in public. “Concealed carrying” is the most common form. Concealed carrying involves concealing a firearm from public view on the body, usually underneath a coat, at the lower back, hip, leg, or on one side of the rib cage. Carrying a concealed handgun in public is permitted for non-law enforcement officials in 49 states as of July 13, 2011, although regulations differ widely by state. Illinois and Washington, DC (my hometown, more in this later) do not allow concealed carry except by active and retired law enforcement officers. I believe that all citizens that have been trained have gone through background checks and properly trained in firearm use should be able to conceal and carry. Gun control advocates staunchly disagree with the idea of “conceal and carry.” They argue that increased gun ownership leads to more gun crime and unintended gun injuries. They contend that concealed firearms increase the chances of arguments becoming lethal, and that society would be safer with fewer guns on the street not more. Individuals against conceal and carry believe that concealed handguns are not an effective form of self-defense. A study by the American Journal of Public Health by Charles Branas, PhD., found that someone carrying a gun for self-defense was 4.5 times more likely to be shot during an assault than an assault...

...wrong hands, leading to a school massacre, provokes schools to restrict firearms on campus through school policy. Even though facilities of higher education have been deemed generally safe places, school shootings have periodically disrupted that ideology, triggering debate of how students and faculty should defend themselves in the event of a shooting. Restricting firearms on campuses, a notion praised by gun-control advocates, raises the argument of the constitutionality of that decision by gun advocates. In order for an individual to be able to properly exercise his/her right to self-defense, college firearm policy shouldn’t ban carry of handguns by CHL holders, because it infringes on the second amendment, infringes on the ability to defend oneself, and would deter the effects of violence and crime on college campuses. Colleges shouldn’t ban the carry of handguns by CHL holders as it allows individuals the right to defend themselves in event of a shooting. In the past few years, there have been many instances of violence on campus from killers who did not have a CHL license. Theses shooters appear randomly and the amount of damage they can do is unpredictable. Campus security and police are only so available, and are most likely too late to the scene in the instance of a campus shooting. The ability to have a concealed handgun means that when a perpetrator tries to shoot a classroom up, the owner of the handgun can prevent death or injury and classmates and self. A campus full...
