Ethical leadership problems that resulted in columbia/hca's misconduct

There were organizational ethical leadership problems that resulted in Columbia/HCA’s misconduct. They were focused more on profits. Leadership allowed or asked billing to swindle Medicare and other federal programs. They paid doctor’s to sign off on records that a patient had a detailed procedure even though they did not. They used a patient dumping system or released patients to other hospitals even still they were not in stable form.

They hired Alan Yuspeh as the senior executive to oversee ethical compliance. Employees had training meetings and programs, certification tests for the employees for billing codes, made sure that new employees would be take ethical training, obligatory retribution and had a 24 hour number to call to report any crime. This has made them very successful.

The hospital’s financial health was not good; it suffered from rising costs, static revenue, and declining quality of care. Bruce Reid found his assignment far more challenging than he anticipated while taking over the responsibility. Currently the challenges in front of him are to improve the quality of healthcare services and the financial health of the hospital. Reid has less than a week to finalize his $70 million budget for approval by the hospital’s board. One major issue he needs to address is the future of six off-site clinics, which are incurring losses. He needs to arrive at the conclusion to close them or continue operating them as he is stuck between Blake’s responsibility to serve the uninsured on one hand and to remain viable and self-sustaining on other hand. To arrive at the conclusion he has been advised by few industry experts. Reid to Demonstrate Strategic Leadership Qualities ...

Scheduling at Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company

...Running head: RWBFC Scheduling at Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company Shelia Iceson Operations Management Dr. Kyle Peacock December 12, 2011 Develop a staffing plan for RWBFC in accordance with the constraints stated in the case. This staffing plan recognizes the significant commitment of human resources necessary to accomplish the job and its requirements. It also recognizes that the Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company (RWBFC) must continue to provide a high level of service and maintain the same level of productivity while this project is underway. The Red, White and Blue Fireworks Company’s staffing strategy is to minimize labor costs by staffing only what is needed for current production due to its inability to expand at the current facility. Staffing levels are rebuilt or contracted as determined by production schedules and as reflected by staffing requirements and constraints. To minimize the potential for over or under staffing, hiring should be based on a review of RWBFC’s production schedule and a review of at least 2 to 3 months forecasting. In order to develop the staffing plan for RWBFC the basis of estimate analysis needs to be used, considering the following constraints: * RWBFC needs to operate ten hours a day * RWBFC needs to operate seven days a week * Employees must have three consecutive days off * The manufacturing process requires a minimum of 20 employees The following table represents a simple schedule...

Om Toys City

...Operations Management Department Toys City, Inc.* (Abridged) Goodman & Goodman, a CPA firm, has audited Toys City, Inc., for the last three years. Toys City, Inc., is a regional retailer of children's toys and games. Each of the three previous audits resulted in unqualified opinions. Toys City's year end is December 31, and Goodman & Goodman has agreed to provide the audit report on March 1, 1998, ten days before the annual board of directors meeting. Bert, the manager from Goodman & Goodman in charge of the Toys City engagement, recalls that last year there was a 25 percent budget overrun. He attributes one-third of the overrun to unforeseen circumstances and the remaining two-thirds to poor planning. He estimates that poor planning resulted in approximately 130 hours and $3,400 in audit fees that were not billed to Toys City. In an effort to avoid another costly overrun, Bert wisely decided to devote more time to audit planning. By talking to various people, Bert learns that a project management technique known as Critical Path Method (CPM) could assist an auditor in sequencing all audit detail work (including work requested from client personnel), efficiently allocating personnel resources, highlighting potential audit bottlenecks, estimating completion time, determining the probability of meeting a completion deadline, and providing a framework for relevant feedback and control as the audit progresses. Thus, he decides to spend an additional 17 hours planning...

How to Find Median Value

...numbers you are given in value order and find the middle number. Example: find the Median of {12, 3 and 5} Put them in order: 3, 5, 12 The middle number is 5, so the median is 5. Example 2 Look at these numbers: 3, 13, 7, 5, 21, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29 If we put those numbers in order we have: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56 There are fifteen numbers. Our middle number will be the eighth number: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56 The median value of this set of numbers is 23. (Note that it didn't matter if we had some numbers the same in the list) Two Numbers in the Middle BUT, if there are an even amount of numbers things are slightly different. In that case we need to find the middle pair of numbers, and then find the value that would be half way between them. This is easily done by adding them together and dividing by two. An example will help: 3, 13, 7, 5, 21, 23, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29 If we put those numbers in order we have: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 56 There are now fourteen numbers and so we don't have just one middle number, we have a pair of middle numbers: 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 56 In this example the middle numbers are 21 and 23. To find the value half-way between them, add them together and divide by 2: 21 + 23 = 44 44 ÷ 2 = 22 And, so, the Median in this example is 22. (Note that 22 was not in the...
