...From the time of the women’s movement, women have proven to society that they are just as capable for the same roles that men perform. Within the short story “Victory” by Claudia Casper, one can see the similarities between male and female dominance and how society has created the image that women imitate male behaviour. The story takes place in 1967, where the Beatles was popular and the Vietnam war left a mark on people’s lives. It starts off with Claudia beating up Sharon Fink over a bracelet which she stole. After winning the fight, Claudia challenges a model named Cathy to a fight because she lied about being in a Sears catalogue. At this point, Claudia starts experiencing feelings about power and victory which relates to the main theme of dominant behaviour amongst females. Despite not agreeing with her actions, Claudia felt powerful when her classmates were chanting her name. Claudia as a woman, expresses her dominance in the same way as she expressed it over Cathy; she wore nice clothes to show her superiority over Cathy, which represents women in general and how they try to “peacock” to exert their dominance. This display is similar to how men exert their dominance in a different manner; while males generally fight using force, females tend to create a show to prove their control, and when that fails they can resort to violence. Claudia questions whether the media is correct in saying that women are adopting male characteristics and behaviour. One would believe that...

...Thesis: By examining Jack Overduin’s “Faith and Victory in Dachau”, Corrie Ten Boom’s “The Hiding Place”, and Eli Wiesel’s “Night”, it is clear that both documents present differing perspectives on the theme of providence. While both Jack and Corrie realize that both the good and bad times are in God’s hands, Eli doubts God’s existence in the bad times, and believes the desirable times arise from fate or chance. I. Introduction: (maybe use the Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 10 about providence) II. How Providence is viewed when things go well. (During the favourable times, Jack Overduin and Corrie Ten Boom thank God for His blessings and care over them while Eli believes he is just getting lucky.) A. “Faith and Victory in Dachau” 1. Pg. 193 “Again and again, we compared our lives with what they had been only a few weeks before. It was a miracle of His mercy!” 2. Pg. 154 “ In His eternal wisdom God gave each of us the grace that we needed, The one received the grace to continue to live in Dachau’s torment without succumbing spiritually and morally, and the other received the grace to die.” 3. Pg. 209 “The S.S guards ate with us. What a difference! They had a dry piece of army bread, while we had delicious sandwiches made with homemade bread form our parcels. Overordnet vil jeg tage et kig på filmens handling med særligt fokus på bandemiljøet som vil fremstå i min redegørelse, og så vil jeg analysere de filmteknikske virkemidler og komme ind på mit diskuterende underspørgsmål omkring hvad bande exit er, som jeg tidligere har nævnt. Sidst men ikke mindst vil jeg komme med en konklusion vedrørende opgaven i sin helhed. Redegørelse af filmen med fokus på bandemiljø. ...Corrie Ten Boom was the main character and the narrator. Corrie was a Dutch woman who went to a Nazi concentration camp for harboring illegal Jews. Corrie was my favorite character because I can see some of myself in her, like how when something is important to her she puts her whole heart into it and how family means everything to her. Betsie Ten Boom is Corrie’s older sister who was a very religious person and was always full of hope. Betsie was sent to prison for the same reason Corrie was. After a long time in prison Betsie dies of an unknown illness. Casper Ten Boom is the father of the Ten Boom family. Casper taught Corrie the art of watch repair, he was also a very religious and nice man. Casper also went to prison because he was harboring illegal Jews. Casper died shortly after going to prison. Mama was the mother of the Ten Boom family. Mama died pretty early in the book, she was terribly ill but then at Nollie’s wedding she made a miraculous recovery, then shortly after had a stroke and...

... J.Mullen Living in Wonderland Kaloyan Kolev The life of a college student has given me the great opportunity to observe student behavior. Usually I meet quite ordinary students. Some of them are interested in studying, others in fashion, music or computer games. However, I have also met students who are intriguingly different - to say the least. Recently I received the divine inspiration that there are four main types of abnormal students that are either of extraterrestrial origin or are the product of some kind of evil sorcery: The Zealot, The Casper, The Bear and The Challenger. The Zealot takes classes more seriously than he should. He believes that if he doesn’t get an “A” on every single test, he will be crucified, God himself will come down to earth to unleash the Holy Armageddon upon him and the gates of Heaven will forever stay closed for his soul. The Zealot always comes to class looking as if wild wolves have been chasing him to school. Looking like he has seen the headless horseman, he quickly makes his way to his desk and immediately opens his books and starts reading. For him every second counts when it comes to studying. During a class, the Zealot is always listening to what the professor is saying as if his life depended on it. He is on...

...Although proponents of logging claim strategic removal of trees will prevent depletion, loggers rarely implement such tactics. Avaricious harvesters raze entire forests with animosity, as if the ancient landmarks were uninvited weeds on a well-kept lawn. Unfortunately, Americans have been annihilating their natural resources for decades, specifically since the beginning of industrialization during the early twentieth century. According to Julie Casper PhD, in her book Forests, foresting had a profound effect upon the nation: “… the massive deforestation in America moved inland. In the early 1900’s, about 500 million board feet of redwoods were harvested each year. Then, from 1947 to 1958, this rate rose to a billion…” (81). During the huge economic boom of the mid-twentieth century, America began experiencing unprecedented increases in deforestation. Casper also reports “much of America’s old growth forests have been cut down”(81). Not only industrialization, but also urbanization caused a massive diminution of trees in America. Casper states because humans have rapidly expanded their domain for past few centuries, only “about 3% of the original temperate...

...shocking scene for me happens at the end of the film when Sayra and Willy (Casper) reach a river that represents the border between Mexico and the United States. As they get there, a coyote or people smuggler agrees to take them across one by one. Casper pays the man with his stolen digital camera containing the prized pictures of his murdered girlfriend and lets Sayra go first. Just as she is half way through, the gang finds Casper. After a desperate chase, Smiley encounters him on the riverbank. Thereupon, Smiley, with tears in his eyes, shoots Casper three times, the last bullet piercing his head. This allows time for the other maras to catch up. They then all proceed to empty their magazines and clips into Casper in an execution style killing, while Sayra struggles to hold on to the raft and screams horrified. From my point of view, it’s ironic that Smiley is the one who kills Casper. Smiley, a young 12-year-old kid, recruited and initiated by Casper himself was the one in charge of ending his life, no one else. Casper was the one who brought him up in the gang and taught him about the tasks, responsibilities, and sense of comradeship of MS-13. I think part of the movie’s a message with this scene is that “who that lives by the sword, dies by the sword”. This means that if you use violence, or other harsh means, against other people, you can expect to have those same means used against you. Casper lived from being a gang member, stealing, harassing, and murdering people...

...Human Resource Development (HRD) “refers to the integrated use of training and development, organizational development, and career development to improve individual, group, and organizational effectiveness” (Noe, 2010, pg. 41). Trainers are responsible for the training and development of employees and managers in a corporate organization. Training is an important part of any organizations human resources department and is essential to the growth and development an organization (Kraiger, McLinden, & Casper, 2004, pg. 339). Corporate organizations usually have their own HRD departments within their company. HRD provides in-house consultants, mangers, trainers, and employee experts to help assess, guide and develop employees within the organization. Trainers work with employees and managers on what is needed to improve and increase their effectiveness within the organization (Noe, 2010, pg. 40). Outsourcing training is an alternative option for corporate organization to bring in trainers to train employees or have employees go outside of the organization and receive training. Some examples of organizations providing out outsourced training are trade and professional organizations, and consulting firms (Noe, 2010, pg. 40-41). New trainers gain knowledge and experience through on the job experience and academic courses. There are five concepts that are important for new trainers to learn in order increase their effectiveness in a corporate organization. One concept that is important...

...Have you ever noticed how heat and electricity bills grow? You could think it was from leaving lights on in a room that you aren’t in; or falling asleep with the T.V. on (which I do quite often). It could be this, but it could also be the fact that the world’s source of fossil fuel is running out. We may need to switch to other sources of energy in the near future, like wind power or solar power. These changes would also help reduce the amounts of greenhouse (A gas in the atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range) gasses being emitted into the air, which would help slow down the effects of global warming. Wind is air in motion (Casper), and wind power is a large percent of current energy produced. It can help reduced emitted greenhouse gasses and slow down the effects of global warming. The global wind energy potential is roughly five times current global electricity use (Flavin). Also the price of wind generated energy fell more steeply than any other energy source over the past 30 years (Burnett). The cost of wind power fell from approximately 25 cents per kilowatt per hour (kwh) in the early 1980s to between 5 cents and 7 cents per kwh (Burnett). Advocates argue that a new generation of turbines will bring down the cost to below 5 cents per kwh (Burnett). This would make it much easier for people to be able to afford it. Wind power could provide as much as 6 percent of the nation’s energy (Burnett). It is currently providing less than...

Write your brief answer in the space provided before proceeding to the next section. In this way, you can evaluate your understanding of the applicable techniques to balance profit, growth, and control. I. Founding In 1997, Dr. Charles Casper and John Frost founded ATH MicroTechnologies, Inc. to develop, manufacture, and sell a new medical imaging product. Dr. Casper (47), a radiologist, had trained at Johns Hopkins medical school and, after a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, joined a private practice in Florida. Casper specialized in the use of imaging systems for the medical practice. Over time, he had experimented with different procedures, such as ultrasounds and x-ray, until he became interested in a new technology based on sending electronic impulses through electrodes attached to the skin and observing how these impulses changed as they went through the body. Together with John Frost—an engineer who specialized in digital imaging for medical applications— Casper perfected the technology, reducing its cost and improving its resolution. Both founders anticipated a significant market potential for their product. Relatively low cost...

...Natives and their Role in the American Frontier As Americans, we do not usually question how we came to this land or why we are able to live here as we do. We believe that the American frontier is this grand historical past of our growth as a nation. However, the country we know today as the United States of America was originally inhabited by natives such as the Native Americans, or Indians as they are commonly known as, and Mexicans who were robbed of their homeland in order for the white man to take over control. As citizens of this country, it is important to know how the natives were treated and portrayed in literature in order to become educated about our country and the people that inhabited this land before us. Being ignorant about a particular culture leads to misguided feelings and judgments that are not normally acceptable. By looking at examples from John Smith’s The Chesapeake Indians, Mary Rowlandson’s A True History of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, and Frederick Jackson Turner’s The Significance of the Frontier in American History, we will see that natives were portrayed negatively in popular literature and why it is important to understand how they are represented is justified by the colonial expansion of the American frontier. In early literature written by English settlers, Native Americans were portrayed with very negative connotations. The writers often used words such as: brutal, dark, uncivilized, and savage to depict the native...
