Of the many topics we discussed in class, one that I was very interested in discussing is the needs of humans. This was one of our more lively in class discussions in the latter half of the year as everyone seemed to have slightly definitions of what “needs” entailed. During class, the topic specifically focused on whether companionship is a need. My opinion is that the average person needs human interaction in order to live. This concept is exemplified in the movie Cast Away when Tom Hanks’ character befriended a blood stained volleyball soon after becoming stranded on an island. This shows how desperately humans need companionship, so much so that without it they will begin to fabricate their own companions as we see young children do with …show more content…
As someone who has attempted to go through the process of becoming legalized for the treatment of a medical condition with marijuana, it is a topic I feel strongly about. Before I started my current chemotherapeutic treatment of Crohn’s Disease, I attempted to get legalized but my doctor was not allowed to due to the policies of the health system. Therefore, rather than being treated by a drug that likely has minimal long term side effects according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, I am currently being treated with a medication that we know with certainty is causing damage to my liver and kidneys. I believe that the question of using marijuana medically should not be whether or not it has severe negative side effects, but rather are the side effects of medical marijuana worse than the current alternatives, which I believe more often than not the answer is …show more content…
Given that our world revolves around the needs and desires of humans, we must have, at the very least, a general understanding of human behavior and learn to be aware of others. Personally, as a civil engineering major, anything I am part of designing or building will directly impact humans. For example, my major-related STEM classes teach me about the textbook requirements of designing a building, however it is my social awareness that will help me dictate the details of the design so that it will best fit the needs anyone who may use it. This is why you won’t find a school built next to a prison, or a free clinic built in Palo Alto. It is crucial for any STEM major to have some knowledge of social issues, so that they can be as successful as possible in their

...Castaway The films castaway was directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film is about an Express Systems Analyst who lives and dies by the clock’. He is very obsessed with his job and time even he has put his relationship in the second place but when the plane crushes in the Pacific Ocean, he finds himself strands on a small isolated island. He has all the time to figure out how to survive. In the film we can see the use of visual techniques in showing changes of the main character. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of character. A wide shot is used after the plane crushes, When chuck was struggling on the yellow life raft floating alone in the big ocean and at that time the weather was bad, heavily raining. This is shows us how small and how powerless he is. The director also uses a when shot when Chuck first arrive the island to show a empty place with no life, no ship and no technology so this means he has to finds water, food shelter and a way to prevent himself from being destroyed by loneliness. Another camera shot that the director uses is close up shots. The close up shots are focusing on his face and hand when he was making a fire to show us that it is huge progress from him because we can see he bites his lip, grills his teeth and there are some sweat on his face. He is concentrating very hard. There are other close up focused on his hand when he used his finger to draw eyes, nose and mouth and gives it a name ‘Wilson’ He shares his feelings with it...

How Does Zemechis Use Time In Cast Away

...Through the years, time has slowly taken over our lives. It eats away at our relationships and the work we do. Clocks, our way of measuring time, are why society has gone from leisurely to mechanical and rushed. They started as a way to count days and will soon be internalized. In ancient Babylon over 6 thousand years ago the sundial was used to track time. This was the first civilization to let time rule over them. From there Greece developed the first mechanical clock powered by water. Hamilton introduced the modern electric watch in 1957. As a major theme in Cast Away, time decides the decisions people make. Zemechis shows time in three different ways. Batina introduces timelessness. Technology and Chuck represent digital time. Biological time is shown through Kelly and the island. Batina represents the timeless world in Cast Away. When Zemechis introduces Batina she is a spark between two wings. This gives her a spiritual, angelic, or timeless character. There are also no clocks on the farm. This shows that Batina doesn’t let time rule over her. She enjoys her work and gets lost in the art she creates that will last forever. Batina only physically appears at the start and end of the film, but her symbol, the wings with three circles, is constantly there. When we see her four years later, she hasn’t changed. The world around her has gone...

Hayao Miyazaki's Two Treatments of Duality

...Hayao Miyazaki attained global acclaim for both Princess Mononoke, released in the United States in 1999, and Spirited Away, released throughout North America three years later. These films are clearly products of the same visionary; each film presents a protagonist of strong will and sound ethic and, in each case, he or she is forced to embark on an epic journey. Both films were very successful in Japan; however, although both were critically acclaimed in the United States, only Spirited Away saw continued box-office success. In order to explain the disparity between these films’ earnings, I will discuss the different approaches, which these films take, to the theme of duality. Naturally, the idea of a double nature is unsettling. However, whereas Spirited Away addresses this theme in a way that invigorates and provides closure, Princess Mononoke leaves the audience feeling uncertain. In order to understand the disparity between these films’ earnings, one must examine not only thematic differences between these films, but also patterns among high-grossing films in the United States. In other words, what are American audiences looking for, which Spirited Away offers and Princess Mononoke does not? When reviewing the history of box-office successes in the United States, one becomes aware of an unfortunate truth: that there is little correlation between what viewers recognize as ‘good cinema’ and what they will pay to see. So what is the formula for a box office success...

Guy Ritchie Bio

...Guy Ritchie hit upon a successful formula when directing his first two films, bringing his unique sense of style and panache to the crime thriller genre, but then blotted his copybook when he attempted new things in his following two movies. The husband of mega-popstar Madonna cast his famous wife in one his biggest commercial and critical flops, but has since tried to get his career back on track after divorcing her in late 2008. Guy Stuart Ritchie was born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, to successful marketing executive John Vivian Ritchie and Amber Parkinson. His parents divorced when he was five, and his mother would later marry Sir Michael Leighton, a baronet. Ritchie spent a fair amount of his childhood at the Leighton estate, although his mother and Sir Michael would divorce seven years later. Ritchie was born with severe dyslexia, and at 15 was expelled from Stanbridge Earls School, a specialist school for dyslexics. He worked as a labourer before getting into the film industry at age 25. He began as a film runner (an odd jobber on film and TV sets) before trying his hand at directing music videos, doing “20 videos back to back, really crappy ones with sort of German rave bands”. This gave him some valuable experience behind the camera, and he moved on to doing commercials. With the much-needed grounding, he went on to direct a 20 minute short, ‘The Hard Case’ (1995), which aired on Channel 4. As it did so, it caught the attention of Trudie Styler, the wife of...

...Plan------------------------------------------11 Financial Projections---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------16 Reference-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------22 Summary American Iron Inc. is a manufacturing company. Our company’s objective is to manufacture, using existing foundry practices, grey and ductile cast iron components for public works and highway use, based in the North East United States. The construction industry is finally looking at an upturn in its fortunes after the disastrous effects of the global financial crisis. Because of this upturn in the economy, the construction industry is bouncing back. The North East United States needs substantial infrastructure upgradation and improvements (C. Campbell, Campbell Foundries, personal communication 9-24-2014). Foundries in the United States slowly closed down during the financial crisis. There used to be plenty of foundries all over the United States that used to make cast iron manhole covers and grates. Now there are only 4 in all of the USA. None of these are in the north east selling to possibly the biggest growing market in the country. The New York, Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Baltimore area is the most populous area in the country and growing every year. This growth will need to be met. More houses, developments, road, bridges are all going to be built. This is where our company...

Producing Engineering Housings: Examination of the Manufacturing-Materials-Design Issues

...manufacturing-materials-design issues involved in producing engineering housings. A housing can be defined as an “envelope designed to retain and position a range of mechanical or electrical components”1. More specifically, the aim of this essay is to discuss what aspects need to be considered when determining which materials and processes are to be used in the manufacture of a car engine cylinder block (which is considered to be a housing). First of all, an identification of the developments, difficulties and constraints introduced by the design requirement to cast (or mould) a housing will be done. Secondly, a comparison of the material/process choices between ferrous alloys and light alloys for housing applications will be developed. Thirdly, the finishing, joining and assembly aspects will be identified and finally, this essay will be ended by a discussion about how the overall organisation of the manufacturing system might be expected to change with production from cast iron to aluminium alloy engine blocks and how the manufacturer has accommodated these changes within their overall manufacturing strategy. Connection and Web Evolution (Your Personal Sufficient Property for "Art")

...Connection and Web Evolution PHI 339 One piece of art that I really like is called Acceptance vs. Rejection (Username Squish-Squash). This piece was a semi-finalist in Wacom’s 2009 Bring Your Vision to Life deviantART contest. This 2D image depicts a little girl hugging a strange creature that upon closer inspection appears to have the sad face of a pretty girl but the large, monstrous, decaying body of rejected attempts at existence. It is acknowledged to have been inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s film, Spirited Away (2001). An open property, which I feel is appropriate and which this work incorporates, that will necessarily make every piece of art with its inclusion pleasing to me would be personal connection at a high degree. When I say that I connect/ relate to a piece of art at different degrees it is to acknowledge that I fundamentally relate to all art simply by coexisting with it and that there are also other levels of connection between that and true pleasure. The highest of these levels is elicited by a wild variety of connection “triggers” in my many different mental approaches to the artwork. For example but not exclusively, perhaps if the subject looks like me or an experience I’ve had or vividly imagined, if it’s a subject I’ve studied out of personal passion, if it tickles my brain, if it’s a brand new concept to me, if it’s a polar opposite, if it’s my current favorite color, etc. The triggers that will strike my mind are of such a range that they...

Spirited Away Gender Stereotypes

...‘Spirited Away’ is an anime film by Hayao Miyazaki. ‘Spirited Away’ tell us the story about a young girl who has developed from a weak/vulnerable girl to a much more independent and stronger girl. It is highly entertaining and insightful partly because of the education on Japanese culture, but what I believe makes it more entertaining and insightful is the life lessons within the film. Does culture and gender provide entertaining and insightful material for the audience? I don't believe that the culture and gender title is the only factor that makes the film entertaining. Many of other things within the film make it much more entertaining. In my eyes there isn't much of Japanese culture that gives me interest apart from the buildings and more. The gender stereotype is mostly shown in Chihiro not any other characters which doesn't make it a large factor in the film other although it's put in the main character. Many more different factors of ‘Spirited Away’ make it entertaining and insightful, such as life lessons within the film and how some characters are exaggerated also known as a caricature. Life lessons teach more about what we should know more in general rather than Japanese culture which isn't necessarily important for the majority of us in the future. Hayao Miyazaki has used many...

...The history and evolution of materials used to make automotive engine blocks The engine is an essential part of an automobile that provides tractive force to drive the entire vehicle. Most of the current engines are the integral section of a vehicle which is built in different arrangements and more complex as compared to the early engines. The common parts present in an engine include camshaft, rocker arms, pistons, crankshaft, flywheel, both oil and fuel pumps and other various components. The discovery of both light, as well as stronger engineering materials in manufacturing different parts of an engine, has had an impact on power to weight of the engine thus making the entire automobile very light. An engine block or else cylinder block is the base of an engine that accommodates about all the parts needed for an engine to perform properly. There exist mainly three configurations of an engine block, that is, horizontally-opposed, “V”- shaped as well as inline configurations. The number of cylinders within these block configurations varies from a minimum of two to a maximum of sixteen depending on the power needed. Since an engine block is the most significant part of an engine, it should satisfy quite many functional requirements. The functional requirements include; 1. Housing of the moving components and the fluids, 2. Enduring the varying thermal pressures generated during combustion process, 3. Making the automobile last longer, 4. Maintaining of the engine...

His vision was to provide Australian-made iron castings at a time when they were imported from Britain. The Business, based in South Wollongong in New South Wales (NSW), produced casting lamp posts and manhole covers for the sewerage system. Warehousing

...Warehouse function Historically warehouses were a dominant part of the urban landscape used from the start of the Industrial Revolution through the 19th century and into the twentieth century: the building remained when their original usage had changed. There are four identifiable types of warehouses. The cotton industry was co-terminus with the development of the warehouse, and all five types were represented in Manchester, United Kingdom. Warehouses in Manchester were often lavishly decorated juxtaposing with the modern view of warehouses which are assumed to be standard industrial buildings. Display of Goods for Sale These displayed goods for the home trade. This would be finished goods- such as the latest cotton blouses or fashion items. There street frontage was impressive, so they took the styles of Italianate Palazzos. Richard Cobden's construction in Mosley Street was the first palazzo warehouse. There were already seven warehouses on Portland Street when they commenced building the elaborate Watts Warehouse of 1855, but four more were opened before it was finished. It was this type of warehouse that inspired the Germans in Duesseldorf and Muenchen to name their prestigious departmental stores, 'Warenhausen'. Overseas Warehouses These catered for the overseas trade. They became the meeting places for overseas wholesale buyers where printed and plain could be discussed and ordered. Trade in cloth in Manchester was conducted by many nationalities.
