The brain is the central part of central nervous system in all animals. It is composed a many different subunits that work together to help the animal function properly. An important part is the cerebrum, which is “responsible for the integration of complex sensory and neural functions and the initiation and coordination of voluntary activity in the body.” This is composed of the four lobes, the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal lobes.
The frontal lobes are involved in moving and thinking and are the location of the higher mental function. In the lobes, molecules work together to perform higher mental functions, such as planning, deciding, perceiving. Also, personality and temperament are both involved with the frontal lobe. The motor cortex is a narrow, vertical strip in front of the central fissure, which controls voluntary movement and is found at the back of the lobe. They are the main site of the “higher” cognitive functions. The lobes contain many important substructures, such as the prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, motor and premotor cortices, and Broca's area. These are involved in …show more content…
They are also involved in touch sensations and perceiving spatial relationships. The somatosensory cortex, found right behind the central fissure, processes touch, temperature, pain, and pressure. In addition, it creates a mental map of body to locate source of sensations. Other maps in the parietal lobes keep track of the position of body parts, so they prevent you from biting your tongue or stepping on your own toes. There also is a difference in functions between the two hemispheres. The right parietal lobe allows us to locate in 3D space positions of external objects detected by own senses. The left parietal lobe specializes in locating source of speech sounds and works with temporal lobe to extract meaning from speech and
