...The Challenges Facing Labour Unions Today Good morning ladies and gentleman. Today I am going to talk about some of the challenges facing labor unions today and how we can rise to meet them. Government policies may vary from province to province but we are fortunate enough to have some of the strongest labor legislation out there. The economic recession has been hard on everyone and unions are no exception, with the lay-offs or closures of plants and businesses, the union faces the challenge of ensuring we stay strong and effective. In the workplace there are many challenges relating to diversity, changing human resource management and organizing one of the largest sectors of workers in Canada, the service and retail industry. (Very good introduction!) Economic and political change, globalization and restructuring have made people question the effectiveness or need for unions. With the changes in the workplace and workforce, such as shrinking public sector and primary industries and the growth of the private sector coupled with the changes in work arrangements, unions are faced with challenges relating to their survival and vitality. (McQuarrie, 2003) Traditionally unions were structured to represent employees in industries with a fairly stable workforce and hierarchical relationship with management. Today unions face the necessity of “having to adapt to new realities of work and proving their relevance to a new generation of workers in a variety of workplaces.” (McQuarrie...

...Georgina A. Martin LAW 110 Mar. 22, 2015 Assignment # 3 Assignment # 3 Week 3 Labor unions face challenges in 2015 Tom Stewart describes the reasoning behind the protest by employees geared towards Twin-Cities fast food outlets, Walmart and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport might giving an impression unions Minnesota are on the rise. Sharon Kosher states her experience with the union and finds it to be a waste of money because they aren’t helping or supporting those that pay dues. This caused the number of members to decline. He reveals that workers are not apprehensive when it comes to crossing picket lines anymore rendering pickets less powerful than in the past. He shows the wonder of the survival of unions when companies change hands. However, unions thrive to grow despite the bad mouthing about them that is going on. They are focusing on things like minimum wage. They want to focus on long term goals instead of gathering employees to strike. Stewart points out that 18 of the 34 private sector union elections were lost in Minnesota. Overall, unions let the people decide whether or not they want to be in a union. But the people feel that the union care more about its organization than those that fund it. 10 Years of Vision and Grit Together, Judy Wahlberg, Mike Lindholt, Mary Falk, Nickson Nyankabaria, and Eliot Seide explains how their union has survived the first 10years and the point of “we” over “me”. They believe together they can win battles...

...Workers are a strong union of workers that strive to improve the workplace. The union has accomplished many breakthroughs for employees in the workplace. The HRM face many obstacles in the auto industry besides compensation. General Motors can work with its employees to build a better workplace by utilizing the UAW resources and making their company known for employee satisfaction. The UAW is a powerful resource to all of those who chose to join and work together for better conditions for all. The UAW has improved many things in the workplace. They have gained cost of living allowances for the union; training and education as well as employer paid health insurance. It is so strong because it is made up of not only current workers but also those who have retired from their positions. This gives the UAW an advantage of not only having newer members but members who have already been in their position. (Who We Are, 2013) UAW has many accomplishments and because of this many workers will find this an attractive, incentive joining the union. The union can offer the employees a voice to be heard through and they band together for equal treatment. When everyone is fighting for the same rights they are able to accomplish more than one people speaking up themselves. Due to the amount of people that are at the retiring stage in their lives, unionization would help those just entering the workforce without prior knowledge about the industry. HRM will face many challenges in the auto industry...

...Labour Relations Challenges of Today Currently in Canada, there are approximately 4.7 million unionized workers. Although this accounts for 31.5% of workers, this membership count has been diminishing across our Country. Employer and government pressures to accept wage freezes and reduced benefits are taking its toll on all unions in general. Some universal challenges that unions face today are listed below. 1. Competition: Global markets have put considerable pressure on unions. Many products are being manufactured in other countries for a fraction of the cost; specifically when being compared to unionized factories in a developed country with much higher labour costs. Due to minimal union presence in under developed countries and extremely low fabrication costs, foreign competition has become quite the challenge. 2. Technology: Technology has changed the content of several existing jobs. “Touch Labour” is quickly diminishing due to today’s state of the art machinery, robotics and automation. As a result, workers are forced to expand their skill levels and adapt to new roles. For example, in the mining industry, which is known to have large union membership presence, positions have changed drastically. In the 1960s it took approximately 10 men an entire week to move one ton of ore to surface. It is estimated that today, 1 man & 1 scoop could complete this task in 2 hours. This “ONE” task has eliminated how many jobs? Has caused strong unions to lose how many members...

...Delta Air Lines is a world-class global enterprise has succeeded due to striving for perfection with execution, customer service and industry leading financial performance. The one challenge that continues to be a major obstacle to overcome is employee job satisfaction. Among the 80,000 employees are approximately 50,000 frontline, entry level workers. Many of these employees are temporary, seasonal or part-time status. Due to this relatively unstable frontline workforce Delta continues to face challenges with ensuring employees remain motivated and morale stays high. A happy employee results in a happy customer. Delta continues to be the only major U.S. airline that remains mostly non-union. This is a significant competitive advantage that Delta enjoys over its competitors that have union workforces. This union-free workforce is due to the focus that Delta places on the people first. With the threat of unions always near, it requires Delta leaders to focus on employee morale and job satisfaction. The baggage handler workforce at the Atlanta airport is one group of employees that Delta currently struggles to keep motivated and satisfied with their job. It is a team of 1,000 employees who have one main task – ensure that the 100,000 checked bags each day gets connected with the passenger. This job assignment often times is monotonous and boring, similar to an assembly line at a factory with the same task being done over and over again. Employees are discouraged from...

When I was researching only about the Emancipation Proclamation, it seemed like I couldn’t get enough information about the aftermath. It told me everything except the results. The historians have to work with limited and partial sources, which can make it difficult to study the past. They also have to be sure that the sources are very accurate. Historians have to compare and contrast the different sources. While historians face those challenges, mathematicians and scientists face other challenges. Scientists focus on proving their theories and testing their hypotheses. They also do things to try to predict the future, while historians do things to prevent historical events from repeating itself. Mathematicians' challenges are closer to scientists than historians. Mathematicians try to prove their theories by using letters and numbers, while historians have to interpret the past. Archives are not always easy to access for researchers because of time restrictions and you might need permission. Archives may have partial or incorrect information because people use their own perspectives. They may also have very old, unsecured objects that are damaged or deteriorated, which can limit the resources for the study. Researchers have to sort through and analyze the historical records in which they were created. Sometimes...

...Facilitating Change Amy Hanley ORG/581 August 11, 2014 Facilitating Change As an organization grows, it is important to assess its structure and design. This is especially important as a company expands internationally, as workplace culture varies from country to country and these nuances can determine the success of the organization. This is includes considering the current structure and allocation of resources, identifying any potential challenges transitioning into a new environment, and then determining solutions to meet the needs of the organization within the confines of its new culture. As Walmart expands its operations into China, it is critical that leadership identifies organizational changes needed before establishing operations in that country. Current Structure and Organizational Design Walmart’s current organizational structure has the business broken into three segments- U.S., international, and Sam’s Club- all under the Walmart Stores, Incorporated umbrella. Each division has its own leadership team whose President is accountable to the President of Walmart Stores. Each division runs as its own independent business, giving them more flexibility to make decisions to directly impact the business within their division. Additionally, each division maintains its own real estate, human resources, marketing, and procurement/distribution departments. Overarching leadership across the three divisions include the Chief Information Officer, Chief Financial Officer...

...dysfunctional conflict that occurred between the management and workers union within the organizational structure of the machinist company was as a result of a faulty communication method. First, for there to be communication there must be a credible medium and process between the sender and the receiver. For effective communication, there must be adequate consideration of the perception of the intended message that is the feedback from the receiver should be consistent with the original message. In the case of the manager and CEO of the machinist company, he failed to select the appropriate match between the content of the message and the media used in communicating. A two way face to face communication is the richest form of communication (Kreitner and Kinicki 2013). This method is used when confronted with complex situations and bad news like pay cuts and layoffs and encourages everyone affected to be present and hear the bad news directly from the CEO. Instead of the horizontal method applied by the CEO, delegating his crucial responsibility to the union, he should have used the vertical and face to face method in communicating with the workers. The reason is that the information would have come directly from him to the workers and prevented any ambiguities and misinformation. These uninformed communication method created a vacuum in the line of communication between the management and the workers and gave the union workers the opportunity to capitalize and exploit the situation...
