... GE:102 7/07/12 Transition from high school to college When you went to college did you ponder on the thought on how much college was different from high school? The differences are substantial and can be a lot to handle at once. When I first got here I didn’t know what to expect coming straight out of high school. Till this day I still don’t know what to expect but as time goes on you learn to go with it and adapt to you surroundings. When I arrived at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) I noticed a few differences between my high school and my current university right away. The transition from high school to college was difficult to comprehend, because of the change in friends, not working, eating habits, environment, and my independence. My friends have changed a lot due to the transition from high school to college. I noticed that I have a rather difficile time keeping in contact with my friends back home. The distance between us makes it hard for us to spend time with one another. Also I have friends that attend other universities and the school schedule on top of my own makes it impossible for us to spend and adequate amount of time with each other. The thing I miss the most though would have to be working with my friends, they made it galvanize and worthwhile. I noticed since I have no one to share that same excitement with at any work place, I find myself not striving for employment. I haven’t had a job since I left high school, because I don’t feel like it’s...

...School is going to change forever, governors are talking about changing from 4 years of high school to 5 years. Many schools are changing to this new idea and “more than 230 schools in 28 states” have changed to this 5 year high school plan (Chew). When students hear an extra year of high school they would say, “an extra year of high school, that would suck,”but the point of high school is to get scholars ready for the hardships they will face in college. High school is a place where students will learn new skills, make new friends and improve as a person. The reasons why I think a 5 year high school will not sound that bad is that, it will give students a chance to earn college credits while still in high school, and also an extra year can offer scholars a chance to prepare academically while still in high school....

...graduating high school? It is that time of year where students are graduating from high school and planning to further their education. If you were like me last year, you are more than likely wondering what is expected at college. When I first started college I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect or what was expected of me. Now, I feel college life is so much more enjoyable then high school. I have so much more control over my education and more freedom. This paper will address the main differences from high school to college such as college scene, academic level, and rewarding experience. A college scene has a different scene then high school. Social activities are one of the biggest differences transitioning from high school to college. I think the social scene is so much more different than high school because you have more freedom such as choice of college and residence. You have the ability to choose where to reside at whether it is on campus or outside of campus. Most students attending college live on campus and experience the unsupervised and independent lifestyle. At college you will be experiencing your own rules and living on your own. Therefore, you will be subjected to different social activities. This means they are subjected to pressure and temptations. It is important to choose activities that you are comfortable with and not letting someone else pressure you into something you don’t believe in. At college people attend from different backgrounds...

...graduates from high school go to college. She Followed 34 first-year students from diverse backgrounds, male and female students, and even first generation students to children that had parents that went to college. With all the diverse students chosen, she wanted to find out why students went to college, consequences of going to college when you aren’t really sure you want to go, and the “college for all” effect on society. The students she chose for her research had varying reasons for going to college. Some of the reasons for going include; because it was the next logical step in their lives, a degree is necessity to have a secure middle-class lifestyle, to have the college “experience” for personal growth, to figure out who they were, their parents put pressure on them, and/or just going through the motions, and one actually wanted to go to learn more. All the diverse backgrounds came as many different reasons why they went to college in the first place, but for the most part, she discovered that the main reasons that these college freshmen went was because they felt like they had to because it was what is expected of them of societies social norms. The article introduces its readers to the students and the different answers as to why they enrolled into college. Most commonly the reasons they gave is that they went to college so they can have a greater chance for a higher paying job after graduation. It’s been so engrained into their minds that college is the...

...The gap in the rules and regulations of high school and college basketball is doing aspiring athletes a disservice. These athletes deserve standard regulations throughout their years of play. The three major differences are: game length, three point line, and the existence of the shot clock in college. In a high school basketball game there is four eight minute quarters adding to a thirty-two minute game. Each team receives five timeouts, three sixty second timeouts and two thirty-second timeouts. In a college game there is two twenty minute halves for a total of forty minutes. Each team has four seventy-five second timeouts and two thirty second timeouts. In college, there are also media timeouts which give coaches extra time to coach their teams without using one of their own timeouts. There is no such thing as a media timeout in high school basketball. The gap in the game length of high school and college is not adequately preparing prep players for the next level of play. The players are not used to such long of games when they reach the college level, therefore they are not in the best shape they could be. A high school season last about twenty-five games while a college season lasts about forty games. This aspect also is doing players a disservice because it is not preparing them adequately...

...Academic Summary In the article, “The Problem of the Transition from High School to University Science” by Abour H. Cherif and Marvin F. Wideen, the authors discuss their findings in a study focused on transitional problems students face between High school and College. The two base the study on four main questions: “1) Does a problem exist? 2) If so, what is the fundamental character of this problem? 3) To what extent do the stakeholders (professors, university freshman, high school students, and high school teachers) agree or disagree with causes of the problem identified from the literature? 4) What do they recommend to change it?” (Cherif and Wideen 10). Studies with regard to university freshman have displayed that the first year of college is used to make the ever difficult adjustment from high school to college. Students tend to be ill prepared and the college system doesn’t offer much aid in fixing the issue. Many previous studies have examined this problem from various viewpoints, however, none have addressed the problem directly. Only making reference to its correlation with other topics. This article uses High School students, Teachers, university freshman and professors as its subject groups in surveys and then further interviews from each party. The previous texts that have observed this issue were analyzed to identify causes of the problem from various points of view. Some authors based their arguments on theories or data, while in other papers, the causes had...

...Wood bats are safer for high school and college; however metal bats have better performance. With the ball speed off of the bat as the big safety issue for high school and college, wood bats have a slower speed than metal bats do. With every solution there is a problem to the solution; wood bats do not produce like metal bats do. The game play is different with each bat. The changes that the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NCAA make for bats for play will have an effect for upcoming students. In High school and college the players get to use metal bats instead of wood. The performance of metal bats is a lot higher than wood. That is why college and high school use metal instead of wood bats. Metal bats have a higher ball speed off the bat, which is the safety issue that the NCAA and the NFHS have right now. There is a new standard for baseball bats which took effect in 2011 which is the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) bats. They have almost the same ball speed off of the bat as a wood bat does, but the metal bat has a bigger sweet spot. A sweet spot is the part of the bat that will give the biggest trampoline effect to the baseball. Metal bats have made scoring runs in high school and college a lot easier than wood bats. The BBCOR bats have had a slight decline in runs and hits unlike the Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) bats. The change from BESR bats to BBCOR happened in 2011. BESR bats had to high of a ball exit speed off of...

...Pieces The transition from high school to college is an exciting and challenging time. It is a great milestone in one’s life. There are many differences between the life of a high school student and a college student. Some people will be able to jump right in and adjust to this change effortlessly. Others will take years to adapt or may never grab hold of the whole college experience. High School and College are both educational grounds for a student to grow and improve their lives with knowledge. High school and college are like puzzle pieces on one side they fit together, but on the other side they are something completely different. High School is a continuation of elementary and middle school where students learn what is expected as the standard of education set by the government. Up until the age of eighteen students have no choice but to attend because of the law. During school hours there are rules and regulations which one cannot break, because there will be punishments for ones actions. There is a strict schedule that students have laid out for them and that they must follow. Along with the basic classes there is social learning that takes place during them. Students still need to understand how to react to situations, such as it is rude to talk over someone else who started talking first. The high school presents a wide variety of activities and field trips. With for years of experience and routine they get used to being high school students. For some it...

...Incorporating Changes to the Current Standardized Testing Program Rowan University February 9, 2016 Standardized testing has become a subject of debate in the U.S education system. The New Jersey Department of Education replaced its previous common core testing, NJASK and HSPA, in 2014, with a single new standardized test, PARCC, for all grades from 3-12 as the single statewide assessments tool (“PARCC Assessment,” 2016). Many, if not, all states have their own version of standardized testing programs at their grade and high school level, but the question arises as to how accurately standardized tests measure current students and future potential toward college. Some will agree with J. Pollard (2002) that ‘we need standardized tests, if only because we have no alternative method of measuring student achievement, and making sure that all kids are getting a decent education’. Others will argue that it is a distractor and negatively impacts a students’ long term motivation and that it causes unnecessary stress (“High stakes testing,” 2016). If we decided to abandon such testing as PARCC, what will replace it? This paper will look into the issue of standardized testing, offer some alternatives methods that reflect changes in assessments and looking into a means to address the issue at the National level. The end result would be an assessment system that can continue to evaluate our children in the holistic view for future advances into higher...

...children, the majority of whom attend public schools. It is no surprise then that if a school system is failing so too are the neighborhoods around it. Revitalizing anything may take a generation, but it all starts with an adequate education. The questions that need to be answered are: “What is adequate education? For whom must the education be adequate? Is there anything already in existence that addresses these problems with education?” The answers for these questions can be used to make necessary changes in the education system of Washington, D.C. Mayor Gray, like many others, believes education has to do with higher test scores and preparing students for college. His mission statement outlines offering quality education, holding educators accountable for students’ success, and informing parents on what is being done (Gray, 2013). However it doesn’t address the need to prepare students for the workforce right out of high school and not creating an education system geared towards college enrollment only. Many students come from broken families and bad neighborhoods causing higher education to be a luxury they can’t afford. High School Reform and Work: Facing Labor Market Realities (Barton, 2006) discusses that same major concern, modern high school education concentrating on college, but not workforce preparation. The schools’ major concentration is to get more students enrolled in college. At the same time students who do not go for a college education are left with no preparation...

If you are high schooler that is getting ready to graduate and go on to college; there are usually the same questions that all students have. What will it be like? How different is it from High School? It is important for all students to be prepared for the road ahead. Some ways to be prepared is to research and talk to anyone that might have gone through it already. Homework College and High School both have a lot of homework but there are many differences when it comes to the homework you are given. In high school you are given homework from textbooks rather than home work from the internet. Homework in high school always seems more cut and dry; there is usually a right and wrong. College there is a lot of “What is your opinion on this topic?” College requires more written assignments then high school. Also most individuals that are in College have more than just school and homework to worry about completing. It’s funny that when you are in high school all you can think about is getting out and growing up but when you are in college with all the other responsibilities that you obtain, all you want to do is go back to a simpler time. Schedule It is very important for everyone to learn to time manage. Schedules for High Schools are pretty simple; they mostly just have to worry about...

...Recently parents have decided to take the issue of military services recruiting in high school to the school board. Some parents are concerned and feel that military services should not be allowed in high schools because they lie and because they are aggressive with their recruiting tactics. Military services should be allowed to recruit in high schools in order to help all students be successful upon graduation by providing an opportunity for at risk students to leave their current situation. Also it provides students who will not attend college an alternate route of gaining valuable skills, and to provide an opportunity for low income students. Parents concerns for military recruiting in the school is that military recruiters lie to students about benefits and are aggressive in their recruiting tactics. “One of the most common lies told by recruiters is that it is easy to get out of the military if you change your mind.”(Ayers 2006) All though some military recruiters will lie and deceive others in order to get them to enlist not all military recruiters lie. Also with today’s technology any student can do their own research to verify the information a recruiter is distributing. Also parents believe the military service have gotten to aggressive with recruiting. The argument is teens are attracted to the free gifts and make a quick decision. Yes the military uses materials that they have branded with their logo to attract students attention. ( Atten-hut! ) However a student...
