ABSTRACT

The experiment presented by the student is all about the magic fruit called Mangosteen. Mangosteen is scientifically named as Garcinia mangostana. The ripe mangosteen is dark red and tastes best if harvested before turning purple or blue-black. It does not ripen post-harvest. Unlike many other tropical fruit, which have a somewhat musky flavour, the mangosteen appeals to almost all, without a learning period. About a third of the fruit is edible and this part consists of 4 to 8 white to pinkish juicy segments. The precise number is indicated by the remnant flower parts on the front of the shell.

The fruit is known to grow seasonal in the Philippines and the nearby countries. It costs a bit pricey because of the recent study that Mangosteen could be considered as a wonder fruit because of the health benefits it can give to people regarding their health.

W ith this experiment, Mangosteen will be shown as a jam to make it more available in homes with a longer storage time in homes and to make it more appealing to children who wants to eat anything with filling and usually sweet.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

a. Background of the Study

The student wish to work with Bignay during the start of the proposal of the study but due to the unavailability of the fruit the student and her family decided to work with a fruit who is not that known in the highlands like Cardillera. The Mangosteen is a fruit which is usually available in provinces located at the south of the Philippines like Davao. This fruit is usually a seasonal fruit. It is quite a pricey fruit because of its rare availability here in Luzon. Because of its latest introduction of this fruit in the Philippine market especially in food suppliments advertised in television, the student got curious and tried encouraging her parents to buy the fruit which was locally available in the market of Baguio City with a price of about nearing 500 a kilo and taste it themselves. This made them decide to use it in replacement for the first decided fruit for the project.
Most, if not all fruits and vegetables have a certain life dura tion, and then after that would already start to rot and eventually decrease its quality with the nutrients and taste. The student would be making this fruit into a jam, which will make the availability of the said fruit longer in their household and would be appealing to her and her sister.

b. Specific Problem

1. Can Mangosteen be made into preservatives like jams? 2. Will the prepared jam be delicious for children like her and her sister? 3. What form of preservation is used to make Mangosteen jam?

1. Most fruits that are pulpy can be made into jams. Mangosteen is a pulpy fruit so this could be made into jams. 2. Anything sweet is appealing to children. They would surely like it. 3. Sugar is the other main ingredient of the jam. This is the best way to preserve fruits.

d. Significance of the Study

The research is being made by the student in order to for her to learn new ways on how to eat and prepare fruits. Although she will still need the assistance of her parents to prepare this but still, she would be able to prepare simple snacks for her and her sister. Aside from making a jam out of the fruit, she would also learn more of the fruit she would be using. It will not just be a fruit she sees on the television but with her first hand experience of eating it, tasting it and enjoying the health benefits from it.

CHAPTER 2
Materials and Procedure

Ingredients * mangosteen pulp or mangosteen puree- 200 g. * Pectin – 4 g. if available * Sugar -70g. * Lime juice -15g. * Water- 50g.

Procedure 1. Heat the sugar with half a cup of water until dissolved and filter the syrup through a fine cloth. 2. Mix the mangosteen with 50g.of water. 3. Stir while heating until soft. 4. Add syrup that is mixed with pectin and lime juice. 5. Stir until thickened (until 50-60 brix) 6. Pour in the jam while still hot and close the lid tightly.

The table shows the feedback of the family members regarding the prepared Mangosteen jam of the student. They really liked the jam because it take them a new taste which is not the typical strawberry or pineapple jam bought in the market. In general, the family is happy and satisfied with the new concoction they made. It also gave them happiness in bonding together while doing this.

Conclusions and Recommendations

a. Conclusion
The student therefore concludes the following; 1. The Mangosteen jam can be made into a jam. 2. People would really try and enjoy the taste of the mangosteen jam. Aside from having the typical characteristics of a jam, it introduces a different taste which will be enjoyed by every family member. 3. Jams are generally using sugar as its preservative. If given the chance again, the student wish to make use of salt to preserve the said fruit to try another process of preserving which is making fruits and vegetables into pickles.

b. Recommendation/s

The student whish to highly recommend the different ways we can preserve the fruit Mangosteen. She firmly believes the magic being shared by the fruit to every individual who eats the fruit. The experiment she made is just an alternative to make the fruit available in their house for a longer time but still, she would highly recommend it the fruit to be taken in fresh from.

She wishes to share this research she found in the internet to encourage people to take in the fruit and feel the magic brought by it.

The biggest reason and the toughest for Kingsford to combat is the gas grill. The perception of gas grilling as easier, faster, and almost the same taste as charcoal grilling has hampered the charcoal category. With the emphasis on “green” living and environmental consciousness, charcoal and charcoal production and its negative effect on the environment, is another reason people are turning to gas grilling. Gas grill shipments grew 8 percent in 2000, while charcoal grill shipments dropped 3 percent over the same time period. Gas grill shipments have increased each year from 1997 through 2000.
