Child Adoption In The Gay Marriage Communities The main question is why child adoption in gay marriages is the one aspect of society that will experience the greatest amount of social change over the next ten years. The reason is because, the gay communities are becoming more relevant in today’s society. What was once a “kept in the closet” subject is now emerging into an everyday aspect in people’s lives. As we all know and as far back as many of us can remember, a child was to be raised within a household of a mother and a father. Many people think there are certain aspects a mother and a father can offer a child to grow up, develop, and become a versatile young man or woman that same sex men or women can not provide for a child. The question in society is; Can a child be raised correctly within a home with same sex parents or will the child’s growth or development be tainted as if they were raised with no parents at all? Most Americans in society would say “Yes” a child or children would be affected by being raised in a same sex house hold, but there is a small portion of Americans who would disagree. Many states across the US prohibit adoption in a same sex household. Not only the couples are not able to have a family of their own, but children in foster care are also prohibited from being awarded a loving home. Each state throughout America have different views on the same sex adoption process. Many states oppose the same sex adoption process, but there are several states which allow the adoptions such as; California, Colorado, Connecticut District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. On the other hand; our sunshine state of Florida opposes any type of gay adoptions, which includes gay marriages as well up until 9/22/2010. Past Governor Charlie Crist made the announcement of the decision after the 3rd District Court of Appeal upheld a 2008 ruling by a Miami-Dade judge who found "no rational basis" for the ban when she approved the adoption of two young brothers by Martin Gill and his male partner (Anderson1 and Kennedy1). Single gay women and men are able to adopt a child, but not as a couple in the state of Arkansas. The couple has to be within a legal binding marriage to adopt a child in Arkansas. Adoption within gay marriages are showing a 53% increase of Americans, which is a 8% growth since 2007, and is moving in a soaring direction of acceptance within the environments. In a recent article of gay marriages to adoptions, it shows “More than nine of 10 say people in their community have become more accepting in recent years“ (Kepple1, Page1, Gainer1). In October of 2010, the President was spoke to a group and stated that his views on the issues of same sex marriage was changing. He stated that his daughters had friends who had same sex parents and there were workers on his staff that were also in committed same sex partnerships and he also supported the Respect for Marriage Act the following year. The engines that are driving the evolution of child adoption within gay marriages are the people in society. Changes within society and how people views of same sex relationships are becoming more precedent than they were in history. A new era of views have evolved throughout society. In a recent article published in the USA Today, the data collected is showing a dramatic increase of people’s views towards same sex marriages and adoption. More people are becoming more openly about their same sex relationships. It shows optimism of people is soaring and one day same sex couples will not be divided from the rest of society. Adoption within gay marriages are topics that will experience the most social change over the next ten years due to the growth in the gay communities and the number of foster care children who needs loving homes. Nationally, there are approximately 463,000 foster care children waiting to be adopted, but there are as many men, women, or couples who haven’t revealed their sexuality to society that wants to have a family someday. California has the largest percentage of children within foster care over all the other states. I feel more states will legalize same sex marriage as many states have done so far which will give couples who thought they could never be parents a chance to provide their home to some needy children that had unfortunate circumstances occur to them throughout their life. Some foster children have a few choices; continue to live in foster care with no stable home, continue to wait for a husband/wife couple to adopt them, or be adopted by the booming same sex couples. The theory of social change which best describes child adoption in gay marriages is the social conflict theory. Social conflict theory examines very large groups of people (e.g., social classes, communities, cities, etc.) or even entire societies (Ch 2, pg 25). Gay marriages couple ignite conflict, power, and tension between competing groups (Ch2, pg 23). Gay marriage couples are human beings as anyone else in society are and should be treated just as equally. As the future rolls around, more and more people along with state’s government will eventually legalize the right for same sex couples to be joined as one. Child adoption among same sex couples will be as simple as it is for men and women couples. The most important factor is many foster children will have a place to call home, someone to love them whom they can open up to, and just to be able to feel safe an secure. My thoughts are no one will never live a perfect life, but we just have to live it to the fullest with what is offered to us. My everyday motto is; Learn From Yesterday; Live For Today; and Hope For Tomorrow. Love has no label; it can be shared by any color, sex, gender, or group.

Military Policy Against Homosexuals In The Military

...The policy prohibited military personnel from harassing and discriminating against closeted homosexual members and banned openly gays from military service. In Military Policy Toward Homosexuals, Davis discusses how: homosexuality is incompatible with military service…yet there are certainly homosexuals within the military. Current policy is to not let them in, if they somehow get in, they are to be put out. To facilitate this process, current policy allows separation based on homosexual tendencies alone, without proof of any homosexual acts. The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy negatively affected the gay community, although many believed its original intention was to reach a compromise between the military and the gay and lesbian community (Belkin). Members of the military may only have a problem with gay and lesbian soldiers because they are experiencing the effects of the “mob mentality.” What I mean by “mob mentality” is that when members of a group are together, they tend to behave in a manner that they might not have when alone, or in a more intimate...

Legalizing Gay Marriage

...thirty-five-hundred years ago” (Haggerty & Lewis). Same sex marriage has been a hot topic in the United States for a very long time. This issue is highly important because marriage is a human right and it a basic moral that all should know. Many people are against gay marriage because according to many right wing conservatives being gay is a choice and that it is against what we learn from the bible. Same sex marriage should be legalized in every state in the United States because it is a basic human right, it shows family values and anti- discrimination, will increase children adoption rates and same sex marriage will also bring financial benefits. Gay marriage should be legal in the United States because it is a basic human right. Although conservatives will continue to debate the issues of gay rights and same sex marriages for years to come, there has been many improvements. Many individuals that oppose gay marriage will “come to understand the fundamental injustice of subjecting gay and lesbian Americans to their own form of Jim Crow rather than sharing in equal rights for all” (Lampo). There is no different from what this nation did to African Americans during the Civil rights movement, to what we are doing to same-sex couples today, not allowing them to get marries. Recognized federal civil rights law in the United States is grounded in the U.S. Constitution as interpreted by the Supreme Court. By this standard, marriage has long been established as a civil right. The operative...

Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized

...Should Gay Marriage be legalized? “What you saw was the people of New York having a debate, talking through these issues. It was contentious; it was emotional; but ultimately they made a decision to recognize civil marriage. And I think that's exactly how things should work,” said President Obama in the news conference in June 2011. In the view of the legalization of gay marriage in New York State, this issue has been debated and remains controversial. Gay marriage has been a major social issue that even President Obama puts an eye on it, as well as the gay communities, who support this action; yet, there are different religious parties who oppose this idea too. Gay marriage should absolutely be granted because of the following reasons: it benefits the gay individuals economically and psychologically, it defends the fundamental human rights of them, and it benefits to the society as a whole. The legalization of gay marriage can benefit the gay communities economically and psychologically because of the relationship is safeguarded. Firstly, a married couple can support each other’s medical expenses, make important decisions and be responsible to them. According to the article writer Ramon Johnson, gay couples are not allowed to interfere his or her personal decisions. In his article, he mentioned “ …same gender loving people are left without protection for their loved ones, such as the authority to make medical decisions, handle insurance claims, supervise estate...

Informative Lgbtqia

...Lauren Weiss Litton English 4 cp Gay marriage(LGBTQIA) The constitution guarantees that we have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, when people say that same sex couples can not be together, or get married, it is discrimination and they are being deprived of their constitutional rights. Just because someone is gay, transgender, gender non conformant, more than one gender, or not sexually attracted to anyone, also known as LGBTQIA, does not make them any less of a human then everyone else on this planet. A “traditional marriage” used to be between a man and a woman, however as times have changed it is a looser term, which should now include same sex marriage. Marriage is a bond between two people who love each other, if those two people just so happen to be of the same sex why should we punish them by not allowing them to marry. As of right now many same sex couples are getting civil unions, or domestic partnerships, in order to recive recognition of their marriage gay marriage would have to be legalized. Partnerships are union’s marriages are recognized by the state, therefore all same sex couples would not receive any of the privileges of married couples. If gay marriage is legalized then all same sex couples receive protection, federal and or state acknowledgement, they have a right to their partner’s insurance as well as hospital visitations. However they are not able to file for joint tax returns nor are they eligible for the tax breaks...

Lgbtq Gay Rights

...The LGBTQ+ community has been fighting for their equal human rights for years now. The community has made a lot of headway, specifically in the homosexual community. Homosexuals were recently granted the right to marriage equality by the United States Supreme Court. This is a right that in some states, was already granted to the homosexual community. Now, the entire country has to honor, accept, and allow same sex marriage. Even though this is a right that should have been granted to this community a long time ago, there was still a long and tiring fight for it. Now, the same thing is happening but with homosexual parenting. As we all know, two people from the same sex can not create a child. So in homosexual communities, if artificial insemination...

Gay Rights

...more informed on Gay Rights such as marriage, adoption and the military discussion of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) maybe we can fight to give same-sex couples the opportunities that the rest of the population have. The first and topic to establish a more equal world is same-sex marriage, collectively known as Gay Marriage. Marriage throughout time has been instituted as opposite sex only unions. As of March 18, 2011 a Washington Post-ABC poll stated that fifty-three percent of Americans are pro gay and lesbian marriage, which is up from thirty-six percent in 2006 (HRC,2011). Comparing homosexual marriages to heterosexual marriages stand to be very equal in all aspects. Both are considered loyal, devoted partners who are active and committed to their community. The advantages given to these unions are very beneficial to all involved. Not just for income sake, but health issues too. It is proven that when in a marriage, humans tend to live longer and healthier lives. So it is shown that marriage in any form is better for the world in general. Looking at the laws as they stand, in 2011 there are six participating states in America that allow the union of gay couples. On May 17, 2004 Massachusetts was the first state to legally accept same-sex marriage. Following suit on November 12, 2008 was Connecticut. Not soon after in 2009, Iowa authorized on April 3, Vermont on September 1 and December 19 in Washington DC. The last state to date that allows gay marriage to be legal was New...

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), sexual orientation is an enduring, emotional, romantic, sexual or affectional attraction to another person. Basically, Sexual orientation is about who attracts us. This attraction may lead to love hence marriage. The issue of same-sex marriage is an argument that we have heard of and have strong opinions on. We believe that homosexual couples should have the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. Same-Sex Couples Deserve Equality

...lives according to religious beliefs that may or may not be factual and were written approximately 2,500 years ago, an uprising would surely come about. If nine million people here in our very own country were told that they were not worthy of being wed today because of the verbiage within a document that was written by wealthy white men in the late 18th Century, what would we do? In the United States alone, it is estimated that nearly nine million people consider themselves gay or lesbian--equivalent to the populations in the above mentioned scenarios (Gates, 2011). So why is it that nearly fifty years after the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, the gay and lesbian community is bearing the brunt of such inequality? In the 1930’s, approximately the same number of Jews in Europe were targeted as an inferior class and we are all well-aware of the atrocities that resulted shortly thereafter (Jewish Virtual Library, 1997). While comparing the Holocaust to the rights of the gay and lesbian community in America is undoubtedly a stretch, it should at least open one’s eyes to the wide-spread nature of the injustice that is occurring in our very own country as we speak. All of us here in the United States have grown up believing that we live in a “free” country--one where democracy reigns and justice prevails. We have been taught this since our earliest days in the classroom. But what if we step outside the box for a moment? The founders of our fledgling nation had these thoughts...

Gay in America

...English 205 September 2, 2013 Gay in America In today’s society Gay men and women have to fight for everything, including the right to marry and have a baby. Gays face many challenges which include a job, a loved one, a family; the right to life, liberty and justice, all these rights are given to all but Gay people. I ask you; is this fair; are Gays not people to? Sometimes even before a gay person comes out they get teased, ridiculed, punished, assaulted and you wonder why some people try to hide it. For a Gay person it can be a constant struggle, just to live and be happy. Everything in a gay person life is a challenge, they must fight for everything. A person that is born has no choice on who they are or what sex they find attractive. Being gay is no different then being attracted to the opposite sex. ABC News reports, “Northwestern University psychology professor Michael Bailey has spent years studying human sexuality. He says sexual orientation is something people are born with, and this orientation makes some gay men more feminine” (1). Yet we blame and punish the families of these gay people. We even try to limit Gay people’s rights. Society believes that being gay is wrong and disgusting. Dr. Berggren claims that “It has long been asserted, primarily by various religious and politically conservative groups, that homosexuality is detrimental to the well-being of any society in which it occurs” (1). Being gay cannot affect the well-being of...

Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage: Advocacy or Objectivity Jenay McNair ENG/147 7/19/2015 University of Phoenix Gay Marriage: Advocacy or Objectivity Do you Adam take Steve to be your lawfully wedded husband? I now announce you, man and husband. Marriage: A word that has three meanings, a representation of true love, and a cause of a national constitutional debate. Merriam Webster dictionary reads that Marriage is the relationship that exists between a husband and wife, and similar relationship between of the same sex (“Marriage”, n.d.). So why the big discussion about to same-sex couples marrying one another. Homosexual rights movement in the U.S states travels back to the 1960s where the Stonewall riots. The New Family

...The New Family: The Different Family Look Daysha Jones SOC203: Social Problems Gina Rollings August 27, 2012 Abstract A lot of experts and others are angry at the fact that same-sex couples exist, now they are worried that if they adopt children that their minds will be corrupted into believing that this is “acceptable behavior.” Also possibly lead to them leading this lifestyle, which they feel could lead to others becoming homosexual. In my opinion, I feel this is a social problem because there has been huge debate over whether or not same sex couples are a part of societies norms. I feel that same-sex couples should not only be able to marry, but be able to complete their family by adopting because many do not have the option or financial stability to afford a surrogate. So it is up to them to either adopt as a single parent or find someone they trust to do it for them, and I feel they should not have to go all of that trouble for the sake of starting a family. There are polices and other legislature in place, but it is not enough The New Family: The Different Family Look Perhaps one of the hot buttons issues in our society today has to be same-sex couples wanting to get married, legally, and start a family by adopting. Same-sex relationships have maybe been around for who knows how long, probably even centuries no one knows; but up until years ago when same-sex couples were getting arrested for attempted to get married people begin to really take notice that...

Right to Be Happy

...The Right to Be Happy By Michelle Evans English 101, Section QC Nov 7, 2014 Although DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) has been overturned, there is however a lot more work to be done as far as equal rights for gay families all over the U.S. The Defense Marriage Act was originally passed in September 1996 and repealed in June 2013. This was wonderful news for the LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) community; however they are faced with a few more hurdles. Conservatives are now trying to make it impossible for same-sex couples to be able to adopt, essentially ruining any chances of having a family of their own. Two steps forward, 3 steps back… For decades, the laws against marriage equality have been tight and not in favor for same-sex couples. Conservatives felt and still feel that marriage should only be between a man and a woman and that being gay was not only a sin and an abomination, but also a lifestyle choice. It is also believed that gay unions should not have the same benefits as heterosexual ones. In the case of United States vs Windsor where two women whose marriage was legalized in New York, one of the parties passed away and the IRS denied federal estate tax marital deduction for the surviving spouse. The U.S. Supreme court found that DOMA violated the guarantee for equal protection and due process under the U.S. Constitution (Polikoff).Currently thirty-two out of fifty states now legalized same-sex unions. Unfortunately to this day...

Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage: What’s the Problem??? “Homosexuality is not normal and should not be established as an acceptable ‘alternative’ lifestyle,’” Blount wrote. “A day is fast approaching when North Carolina will have to deal with the issue of same sex marriage.” This phrase is written across dozens of newspapers, journals, and websites. All you have to do is simply go to yahoo, type in gay marriage in North Carolina and thousands of results come up. Now you may think at first that most of these websites or links may just be talking about the approaching topic, but you would be baffled by what you actually do find. In my case the first time I searched the topic of gay marriage in this state, I was at a loss for words when the first 500 results were all against gay marriage. Such titles as “support traditional marriage” and “nogaymarriage.com” where some of the first I saw. You would have to rummage around through thousands of results before finding one moderate website that could actually tell you what was going on without putting in their own input. Gay marriage, in my opinion should be allowed. There is no strong reason for why homosexuals cannot be married. People should drop all of the political jargon and realize how they would feel if someone told them they could not marry the person they loved just because they were heterosexual. It’s easier to understand once the shoe is one the other foot. One argument heard is that same sex marriages will take away from the founding...

Same-Sex Marriage and Its Affect on Society

...Same-Sex Marriage and Its Affect on Society April 9, 2011 Same-Sex Marriage and Its Affect on Society Gay marriage is a highly controversial topic that has caused violence, tears, confusion, debate, and unhappiness, and action towards the gay equality movement. The United States stresses how everyone is equal and everyone has the same rights, but if that were true, why are gays and lesbians not allowed to get married. In the recent years, the concept of same-sex marriage has become quite the controversial issue. Many lawsuits, law amendments, and debates of occurred because of this issue. It has not only caused pain to those who are affected by these laws, but it has caused hatred for both those who are affected and those who believe that same-sex marriage should not happen. There are many benefits to same-sex marriages. Same-sex marriage decreases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases amongst the gay community, increases adoptions, and is all about love; therefore same-sex marriages should be legalized. Gays and lesbians have been fighting hard for equality for many years now. Before the fight for same-sex marriage came about, discrimination against homosexuals was the current war that is still in process. In its earlier years, being gay was unacceptable. People had to hide who they truly were in order to avoid being beaten or bullied. During and after the wild 1960s, a lot of people were sleeping with multiple partners and even groups. This led to gays and lesbians...
