...overweight or obese has more than tripled (University of Rochester Medical Center). This disease has been rapidly growing and affecting countless lives, many of them people right here in Rochester, NY. Obesity is a growing concern and has begun to be a big problem among youth and children in our area. The national obesity rate in adolescents and children is 17% (University of Rochester Medical Center). For Monroe County as a whole, they are just below the national average at a 15% childhood obesity rate. The rate of the city however is a lot higher and is almost at 22%. According to a study done by the University of Rochester Medical Center, nearly 40 percent of children and teens living in Rochester’s city are overweight or obese (City Child Obesity Rate Almost Twice as Large as Suburban). The number lowers when looking at the suburbs of Rochester, but 25% of children are still obese or overweight in these suburban areas. We believe that these numbers are higher in the city due to a few reasons. The first and obvious reason would be due poor eating habits. These children are eating unhealthy meals and not getting a balanced diet that is resulting in extra weight gain. As a team we also realize that it is not just about and poor eating habits but also a lack of exercise. These children have not been getting an appropriate amount of physical activity and as a result of this inactivity they are becoming heavier. As a part of our campaign we plan to address both of these issues...

...mother of 3 now, delivered her 3rd baby a little girl, one month ago. She works in a lemon packing factory, with an 8th grade education. Mrs. Hernandez reported that she speaks and understands English well. This paper will describe the teaching and learning that transpired between this author and Mrs. Hernandez. After the proper introductions were made, Mrs. Hernandez was handed a pamphlet regarding Car Seat Safety. Mrs. Hernandez was asked about whether she had just purchased a car seat that she is using now for her new born. Mrs. Hernandez reports that the car seat that she has right now was a used one from a relative because her second child is still using an infant car seat (J. Hernandez, personal communication December 13, 2014). When enquired if she has the directions to the installation of the manufacture she stated she didn’t (J, Hernandez, personal communication December 13, 2014). Upon assessing the car seat that is in use for the infant, this author noted the straps to appear worn out. This author then informed Mrs. Hernandez that according to SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A recommends sticking with car seats that are ideally less than five years old and definitely less than ten years old (BabyCenter 2014). While this author was presenting the pamphlet to Mrs. Hernandez, she was directed to read the Car Seat Safety in particular in order to be familiar with the current information on Car Seat Safety, including the appropriate size car seats of different ages. ...Phoenix Material Research Plan As part of your research plan, you must first draft a research question for your research paper that will guide the rest of your writing. A research question, which is more specific and focused than a general topic, is the question that your research paper will answer. For example, if your general area of interest is social security, a possible research question might ask, “How can low-income families save more money if the United States had a reformed social security plan that includes personal retirement accounts?” As you develop a research question, remember that you need to research sources to support your topic. Do not pick a one-sided question that will limit your research. Instead, develop a research question that lends itself to further exploration and debate—a question you genuinely want to know the answer to. Try to pick a research question that is neither too broad (covering too much) or too narrow (covering too little). It should be broad enough to be discussed in a short research paper. Part 1: Complete the Research Plan |What is your general topic or area of interest? |My general topic of interest is Drugs. ...Rett Syndrome Joseph Lee 4th Period Rett Syndrome is a disorder which affects the nervous system and is found almost exclusively in girls. One in 10,000-20,000 newborn babies are born with Rett Syndrome, making this disorder very rare. Rett Syndrome is often described as autism, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, and various anxiety disorders wrapped into one. In this paper, I will discuss what exactly Rett Syndrome is, who discovered it, how he discovered it, what its causes are, what the symptoms are, the disorder’s course, and possible treatments for the disorder. Said Dr. Rett at a conference regarding the disorder which bears his name: These three words summarize best our task: To live, to love, and to learn. We are aware of the fact that many mysteries of this syndrome still remain undisclosed, and therefore, for the time being, we have no option but to live with it. However, the children with their very special ways give us enough impulse to share their lives. It is a further mystery of this syndrome that the affected children render it easy for us to love them. A dominating factor in the care of such children is that they understand us and we understand them. Their appearance and the sparkle in their eyes make it easy to love them. Daily care for them and working with them gives us grownups strength, enabling us to learn the special treatment required, thus furthering our own development. To...

During the 1830s to the 1850s indicated a period when people were beginning to get a sense of reformation regarding American idealism of a democratic and free society. The core goal to end slavery became the central focus to a group known as abolitionists. Formed by a limited amount of men and women both white and black, the abolitionists came most from the North with hardly any from the South. The beliefs of the abolitionists to end slavery in the mid eighteen hundreds, came from not only their understanding of freedom and citizenship which meant equal rights for all persons regardless of their skin color or racial background, but the fact African Americans had not received any rights, and had used slaves as a source of income. Abolitionists indicated “African Americans should be recognized as American citizens and incorporated into the nation” , since American society intended for everyone living in the United States to be citizens. Black and white abolitionists who tried to end slavery were William Lloyd Garrison, Theodore Weld, and Frederick Douglas. 2. The movement of the abolition of slavery started to intensify as both northern and southern individuals gathered to voice their hostility towards slavery by using the public sphere. Abolitionists focused mainly on changing the views of the public on slavery by publishing pamphlets, gathering signatures on petitions, speaking out against...

...English 215: Research and Writing Assignment 1: Research Topics With Explanation Professor Reagan January 16, 2013 There were many research topics that caught my attention, so choosing was a little difficult for me. The first topic I chose is “Should regulations be changed regarding genetically altering plants and/or animals”. This topic is a very serious matter to me, and I am taking it in the context that it is regarding genetically modified plants and animals that were intended to be used for food. I am a vegetarian and I do believe we all have the right to know what we are consuming. Genetically modified food can be dangerous, and by the time we find out how dangerous, it may be too late. The audience for this topic would be anyone who is health conscious, interested in animal rights, or just interested in knowing the truth about what they are really consuming. Two credible sources I would use to write my paper would be the Forbes article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/emilywillingham/2012/12/07/what-you-need-to-know-about-gm-foods-is-half-the-story/) and the Human Genome Project Information site (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/elsi/gmfood.shtml) My preliminary thesis statement would be: “With such a strong focus lately in obesity and calorie consumption, it seems as if many people are becoming more aware of their health and eating habits. While a salad may be a very good option for a healthy diet, does anyone really know what has happened to their...

...However, bilingualism has long-term affects on an individual that, if the second language is kept up, will affect the person through their life span. A group of researchers completed a very expansive research experiment titled “Does Bilingualism Influence Cognitive Aging?” This study is over sixty years long and with 853 participants and tis purpose is to understand the affects of bilingualism or multilingualism on an individual throughout their lifespan. They tested the monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual participants many times for memory, speed of information processing, reasoning abilities, vocabulary, reading, and verbal fluency. The experiment concluded that the more languages an individual knows the more ability that individual has in the categories listed above (Bak 962). The results of this analysis prove the long-lasting cognitive affects for those who are bilingual. The benefits as a result of bilingualism are immense from a...

...effectiveness and the long-term consequences of corporal punishment. The main reason for using corporal punishment is to exert better control in the classroom. Other pro-arguments for the use of corporal punishment would include the fact that it is inexpensive and swift. A reasonable person would believe that missing class is not a good thing for the student so corporal punishment could have the student back in the classroom within thirty minutes or less whereas suspension from school would have the student missing several days of in class instruction. Some proponents of corporal punishment even quote Bible scripture to sever as a reason for corporal punishment, such as the passage from Proverbs 22:15: “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of the child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him.” There is no clear evidence that such punishment leads to better control in classroom. The vast amount of evidence concludes that corporal punishment is an ineffective method of discipline. Further, this discipline has major harmful effects on those who have been disciplined in this manner. The American Academy of Pediatrics did a 10-year study ending in 2013, which was recorded in the Position Statement of the Society for Adolescent Medicine, which concluded that punished children become more rebellious and are more likely to demonstrate vindictive behavior, seeking retribution against school officials and others in society. (1) A student may cease acting out in class only to continue...

...Paper # 2 Jordan Neeley 14069915 Denise Powell Tuesday 12:00pm March 15, 2009 Parents are crying out for information on whether or not it is appropriate to spank their children when they misbehave. This paper will provide a research-based review of the current literature relating to this phenomenon. Information will be provided on how spanking is typically defined by researchers, how frequently parents spank their children, and the effects—positive and negative—that spanking has on children’s development between the ages of six and ten. Based upon this review a position will be taken that spanking is never an appropriate disciplinary strategy under any circumstances. First spanking will be defined followed by frequency of spanking, negative and positive effects of spanking and spanking in other cultures. How Spanking is Defined A critical factor that underlines this issue is the definition of spanking. The varied definitions of spanking can dictate the conclusions investigators and reviewers reach. A commonly adopted definition by the American Medical Association specifies spanking as hitting a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intent to discipline without leaving a bruise or causing physical harm (Kazdin & Benjet, 2003). This definition helps separate occasional spanking from more severe corporal punishment. Just as there is variety in the definition of spanking, there is also variation in how frequently parents spank their children...

...Introduction How did I get here? Good question. My own personal journey into child care has been straight forward. I have only worked in two centers in all my 24+ years in the field, in an in-home family center and in a non-profit NAEYC accredited center. Even though, I don’t have a personal philosophy regarding ECE I am hopeful that by receiving my BA in Child Development, I will have a better understanding of what I want my philosophy to be, how to use what I will learn to help issues surrounding ECE and to become a better teacher overall. How I “got into” ECE I had received my first introduction into ECE was when I was in High School, I believe I was around 15 years old. I had gone to an in-home child care center growing...

...and Case Study Creswell (2002) defines the interview as a method of qualitative research that seeks to describe central themes and meanings of various human phenomena and experience. A web dictionary defines the word “generative” as having the ability to originate, produce, or procreate. This implies that a generative family is a family which is able to multiply by producing new offspring. A family is a system or unit which is defined as a group of individuals who are bound by strong emotional ties, a sense of belonging, and a passion for being involved in one another’s lives (Wright, Watson & Bell, 1996). The family visited was a nuclear family. The term nuclear family was developed in the western world to distinguish the family group consisting of a father and mother, and their children, from what is known as an extended family (Wright & Leahey, 2005). Nuclear families can be any size, as long as the family can support itself and there are only the parents and children. The purpose of the interview presented in this paper was to discover and describe the experience of pregnancy by a married woman who is in her late twenties. The paper presents the findings observed in the interview and ends with a series of conclusions and personal reflections on the interview method. The confidentiality of the pregnant lady’s name and that of any member of her family will be respected throughout the paper. ...This paper will show childhood obesity as a growing problem in our Nation. According to Hagelin, 2012, 1 in 3 children is, “obese or overweight”, often resulting in medical problems adding up to “nearly $150 billion” each year (Hagelin, 2012 p.8). This is beginning to be a major problem in the United States. I, like many others, have seen how it still remains a huge problem in America. Raising awareness is the first step to dealing with a health related issue, like obesity. Before making any positive changes we must first understand how these problems occur. It has grown so much that we even have our First Lady of the United States gearing up to fight against Childhood Obesity. She has a website catered to this specific issue. It is the responsibility of the adults to help spearhead this pandemic, and try to fight against it. We as citizens continue to remain oblivious to the need for immediate changes, it goes to show how unprepared or unwilling our people are at facing the challenges ahead in order to create a healthier and leaner Nation. Childhood obesity is considered a major health problem today because it can lead to many potentially dangerous diseases. Some of which include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, and social discrimination (CDC, 2012, p14). These problems can progress and/or worsen into adulthood causing major issues and a lot of unnecessary medical treatments and expenses. In fact, the psychosocial risks alone can give a child self-esteem...

...History 131 Janet Covert Alexander Hamilton Research Paper Rachelle Sorensen-Cox November 26, 2012 Alexander Hamilton was one of the men who built this country. What began simply as the published views and beliefs of Alexander Hamilton, became the doctrinal basis for one of the national, political parties Americans have subscribed to for over 200 years.
