...setting? How does it influence the characters? The plot? The significance of the setting in the novel The Kitchen God’s Wife is to describe the different upbringings of the protagonists, as well as shape their different values and beliefs. It also sets the plot of the novel as it centers in on the distant relationship of Chinese mother, Winner, and Chinese-American daughter, Pearl. The setting of China displays great significance because it influences Winnie both traditionally and emotionally. Winnie is born and raised in China with a Chinese influence. She takes her religion and belief very seriously, that even after immigrating to America, she still celebrates Chinese traditions, as well as believe in Chinese superstitions. This is shown when Winnie...

...The novel ‘Dream of Red Mansions’ was written by Xueqing Cao, which is one of the four most Famous Classical Chinese Novels. The author of this book, who has a preliminary democratic ideology, demonstrates profound criticism through this book, including the darkness of bureaucracy, the corruption of the feudal aristocracy, even strict social hierarchy system of the real society in that period of time. On the contrary, the novel praises the real love between two main characters who against the feudal ethical code and have enough courage to find their own happiness. In the following, I will evaluate this fiction from the author, brilliant achievements, genre and classical characters of this book, especially demonstrate some difference from other books. The author of this book, Xueqing Cao, is a great writer and poet of the Chinese Qing Dynasty. He was born in an aristocratic family, so he had a happy childhood. But his father was dismissed and arrested when he was 10 years old, and all possessions were confiscated. Thus, Xueqing Cao felt deeply about inconstancy of human relationships and more clearly understood the darkness of the social system. Although he is living in poverty, he is good at writing and painting. According to his own real experience to be artistic, he was dedicated to engaging in the writing and editing of the novel " Dream of Red Mansions". However, due to the poverty he had no money to see a doctor, so he did not complete the novel at the time of his death...

...his brother he has still the great choice. He can choose his course and fight it through and win.” -Lee (chapter 24) Lee has a huge role in the novel East of Eden, as he plays the maternal role for the boys, the loyal philosophic friend for Adam, and a major character for the novel. In the Trask house Lee is portrayed as nothing more than a low class servant, but as we look further into the novel we see the impact Lee had on everyone. For example, he was responsible for keeping the Trask family together. His interpretation of timshel, thou mayest, is an evident theme throughout the novel. He believes that one has the right of choosing between the two paths of right and wrong. Throughout, we watch as some characters fall into the path of evil while others take the other route of good. The Trasks grow closer to Lee and it becomes without him the family would crumble apart as he took over the role of father figure. Lee is the most important character of the novel because he serves to embody and epitomize the concept of timshel, bringing it out from each of the other characters. Lee was portrayed as stereotypical Chinese servant, he wore a que, traditional clothing, and spoke with a heavy Chinese accent. He lived in Salinas in about the 1900s. During this time many of the residents were Caucasians so people were not use to Chinese Americans and so he faced endless amounts of racism as he grew up. Lee had an intimate relationship with Samuel Adams and felt he could really open...

...I have to admit, going shopping for books can definitely be entertaining, but I must also confess that when it comes to buying books, I am a little bias toward novels with pretty pictures on the cover. Maybe it is because in today’s society we are taught to judge everything by appearance, but maybe it is really because growing up my dad read me books with lots of colorful images before bedtime and usually the prettier the pictures in the story the better it was. In books for younger kids most books contain extravagant images accompanied by a few simple words. The artist’s job for children’s books is, in my opinion, is more important than the author’s. I relied on the artist to tell the story, like Mozart relied solely on music to get across his story. When I started to move on to chapter books such as the Cam Jansen series, I would flip through the book, letting the pages fly underneath my thumb, and be disappointed at the lack of color. Not a single picture appeared. I thought that it was the worst thing in the world because it meant from then on I would be forced to read dull pages. Contrary to my initial thoughts, when I cracked open that first book I was unable to put it down until I finished. I was amazed at how I had just seen into another person’s mind and lived with a different identity for that hour. I was no longer Sam Maxwell, I was Cam Jansen the crime solver. I had my own private movie showing in my head. I read lots of Cam Jansen books following the first one and...

...The lake is a central element in the novel and several major events occur here. What is the significance of the Lake in the novel? What do you think the lake symbolizes and how does it evolve as a symbol? Use specific evidence from the novel and cite page numbers. The lake shows a symbolism of comparing a tragedy and to a rebirth in the family. I think the lake was a bitter sweet symbol in the story. We have Lydia who seemed to be like a normal girl coming from a mixed racial family. The sad thing is that throughout the novel, Lydia’s family did not realize who Lydia actually was. I think if Lydia would have learned how to speak how she truly felt about her feelings, her suicide would have never occurred. Lydia was seen differently from others because of where she came from. James quoted, “if...

We will be covering a brief look into the Margaret Mahy’s background and how she made this short story a captivating read for readers of all ages. Then I will touch on the cultural significance of her work, and reflect whether her work is considered economically successful. Lastly, we will cover the cultural values enforced and challenged by this story. Margaret Mahy, is a well know New Zealand children’s and young adult author, she has written many books covering fictional characters with strong personalities and supernatural strengths. She has a collection of over 40 novels, 20 collections of short stories and 100 picture books. The Seven Chinese Brothers, was published in the late 90’s, has been considered a national classic and an all-time best seller. Her books stand out from the rest by elaborating and spicing it up with more ironic humor and action than ever. She give you’re a life lesson in each story she tells, although brothers they are all different and special in their own ways. They will learn how to work together to save each other lives, and to me that is the biggest test of love. How the pieces fit together most short story are not of life lessons, although they tell stories in their own way. Short stories usually have a fully developed theme and can be significantly shorter and less details than a novel some have real-life...

...The author of this novel, John Sandford, has a certain genius when it comes to writing that enables the writer to clearly picture the goings on of the story. This novel can only be described as gritty in a highly scientific, suspenseful way, all the while involving a sharp sense humor. It is not overt; there are no long-winded metaphors that end with a succinct punch line, in the style of Douglas Adams in A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Instead, there are subtle political references, such as naming the ship after the president who launched the space age, purely for ironic purposes, or at subtle jabs at the evolution of society. In one scene, small seismic devices colloquially referred to as Post-its are being used: “They were called Post-its....

...life threatening situations. The main theme that is found throughout the novel is the conflict between friendship and the instinct of self-preservation. This leads to many of the situations that affect the group of teenagers. The instinct of self-preservation leads to many scenarios found within both the novel and the movie. For example, at the beginning of the movie, after Ellie is spotted at the showground, Kevin runs off without thinking about anybody else but himself. Another example of this instinct of self-preservation is shown after the snake escapes from the sleeping bag in Hell. Ellie’s instincts tell her to …panic; I panicked. It told me to run; I ran. It told me not to give a stuff about anyone else; I didn’t give a stuff. It was quite a few moments before I looked around to see if they were OK… (Marsden, 1993, Page 36) This is an example of the self-preservation that is found in each of the characters. However, towards the end of the novel, friendship appears to have more effect on the characters than self-preservation. Kevin is willing to take Corrie to the hospital even though he knows that his life will be at risk upon his arrival. This is an example of one of the situations when the conflict between friendship and the instinct of self-preservation results in friendship ultimately winning out between the two. The friendship between the characters develops throughout the entire novel. For example, at the beginning of the movie, Homer, who has assumed a...

...Introduction A.Literature Review 1. Research Abroad Carson McCullers is one of the most brilliant writer in 20th century America. In 1939, she finished her first novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. It is this novel that launched a 22 years old girl to fame. As early as the 1940s, the western literary world began the criticism about Carson McCullers and her works. At that time, a large majority of the researches used the method of New Criticism. Through a close reading of the texts, they tried to analyze the internal structure and the poetic character of her works. Those new critics did not pay attention to the connection between the novel and the personal experience of the author. And they did not find the profound social significance behind...

...Strategies for Applying Creativity to Problems and Issues Stacy Fraunhoffer Critical and Creative Thinking Randall Vicks There are several strategies we can use for applying creativity to problems and issues concerning the topic. Our topic is from last week regarding a Chinese man who thinks he has the right to sue his wife because she failed to inform him of plastic surgery that she had done prior to them meeting. He says that he has been misled because he thought his children would have her beautiful genes. He is suing her because she had ugly children. I would begin by taking the novel approach to encourage the readers to research each side of the story so they had all the facts. Then I would also improve on what the writer originally had said. I would also devise or modify any new information that I may come across. Strategies for promoting curiosity in this story can be done several ways. I believe the best way would be the novel approach. Doing things by taking the novel approach seems to be very effective and that is because it is done in a new and different way. The other strategies which are devising or modifying a process or system, inventing a new product or service, finding new uses for existing things, improving things, and inventing or redefining a concept also work well. You need to have enough information to effectively deal with the problem and to see it from all aspects. These various methods can be used for producing ideas to eliminate the bias...

...The White Tiger’ is an epistolary novel consisting of a series of letters written by Balram Halwai, an entrepreneur who owns a taxi driving company, for the Chinese Premier, when he visits Bangalore. Balram Halwai is a man who has freed himself from the Darkness and now lives in the Light (The two India’s living side by side). The novel shows us the large gap between the rich and the poor, the struggle of the deprived-class and feudalism in the smaller villages. It also highlights the individual’s aspiration to get out of the Darkness of his life. As Balram is the only narrator in the novel, the question arises as to whether his thoughts are his own or is he representing the views of the author. In order to explore this issue further, the following research question is framed- “Is Balram Halwai is a rounded character or is he the mouthpiece of the author?” In an attempt to answer this question an in depth analysis of the novel was done. As the novel is a comparatively new novel, not much secondary data was available. With the limited references available I investigated the narrative technique used by the author and the evolution of the character of Balram as the novel progresses. Through Balram Halwai’s narration, Adiga takes us on a safari as it were, covering the gamut of the underbellies of the cities (Delhi and Bangalore) as much as of the spectrum of mofusil India. I concluded that the character of Balram Halwai grows in the novel....

...The Good Earth takes place during the early twentieth century in China. Wang Lung starts out as just another poor Chinese farmer trying to make a living from his small bit of land. He works hard, follows family traditions, worships the small earth gods that he believes control the land, and values his land over everything because his life is so dependent upon it. However, as his fortune changes, readers see more and more of his true character through his actions. By observing Lung, readers understand how easily someone’s beliefs and values can change with their situation. Although flawed, Wang Lung continues to be the character with whom readers identify and sympathize. Throughout the novel, Wang Lung demonstrates both his virtues and his faults. One of his faults is avoiding confrontation. This fault is not as clear to readers until after he has children. Several times throughout the novel Wang Lung’s sons take advantage of this trait. When Wang Lung decides to send his older son to school, the younger one begs and whines until his father gives in and allows him to go as well. His sons are not the only ones who use this...
