Ray* UCH of a dean’s job involves reaching out to various communities. We reach out to and build relationships with alumni and donors for needed financial support. We reach out to and build relationships with members of the bench and the bar to help expand employment opportunities for our students. We reach out to and build relationships with members of the University community to ensure cooperation and access to resources. We reach out to and build relationships with our students. This essay is about reaching out to and building relationships with our most important communities: those who work within the law school. In these difficult economic times, most law schools face the challenge of doing more with less. Budgets have been reduced, staffing levels have fallen, and there are limits on how much we want to raise tuition in light of the economic conditions our students face. To do well in this environment and to provide the most effective legal education and student services we can, we must make identifying and fostering the “people potential” of our institutions a high priority. However, there are some additional qualities that public interest and government employers are specifically looking for. You need to demonstrate your commitment to the mission and work of the organization and that you have the skills for the position. Your resume and cover letter must convey your interest, enthusiasm and knowledge of the specific employer you are applying to. It is imperative that you customize your materials to show that your education, experience, and volunteer work have provided you with the skills that relate to the duties of the position. ...For as long as I can remember, I've never been complacent with the knowledge I possess. Constantly setting new goals that will stretch my mind into something that it was not the day before and allowing every experience to shape me, while never loosing a handle on my own personal convictions and what I have learned along the way, has always been a way of life for me. For me, pursuing a legal education is not a terminal accomplishment, nor will obtaining a legal degree quench this ongoing thirst for knowledge that I have always had; I don't want it to. I constantly need to be in pursuit of challenging goals that that require considerable mind expansion and personal reflection. The experiences and knowledge that I will acquire in attending law school will stretch my mind to think in ways that I never have, allowing me to face future intellectual, professional, and academic goals with confidence and enthusiasm. Mid way through my senior year, the University of Arizona choose me to be their undergraduate representative at the "Arizona First" town hall meeting, a three day, bipartisan conference focus on shaping legislation that will bring economic growth and prosperity to AZ. Throughout his four years at CAL STATE LA, he maintained a 3.2 Grade Point Average, which was not sufficient in, and of itself to have, him accepted at any of the ABA accredited law schools. After receiving rejection letters from every law school that he applied to, a friend of his advised him of State Accredited law schools, a law school system founded by former California Court of Appeal Chief Justice Bernard Jefferson targeting minorities who have low GPA’s and an inability to attend law school on a full time basis. The requirements of admission being very few, Mr. Hagopian was able to enroll at the University Of Los Angeles School Of Law. In fact, at the time of his attendance, the dean of the school was Justice Bernard Jefferson himself. Due to the rigid prerequisites required by ABA law school, Mr. Hagopian was almost unable to practice law, which in turn would have been a sad loss for people who need an advocate for their rights and freedom. ...An attorney is an individual who is a member of the profession. An attorney is qualified and licensed to represent a client in court. Basically an attorney may act on the client’s behalf and plead or defend a case in a legal proceeding. The most important part of a lawyer’s duties is to know the law. ...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Monday, March 12, 2012 My Cousin Vinny: a story about legal education The Abnormal Use blog is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the release of the movie My Cousin Vinny by publishing a series of comments and interviews and also by sponsoring a multi-blog discussion on the movie. Go here to get more information. When my students ask me to recommend movies, I give them a list I have prepared over the years in which I have organized the titles under certain main “themes.” No one is surprised to see My Cousin Vinny on the list, but some are surprised I have listed it under the theme of “legal education.” So, I thought I’d use my contribution to the Abnormal Use blog’s celebration to explain why. One reason I place My Cousin Vinny under the theme of legal education is that it provides so much material you can use in the classroom. For example, you can use the movie to discuss criminal procedure, courtroom decorum, professional responsibility, unethical behavior, the role of the judge in a trial, efficient cross-examination, the role of expert witnesses and effective trial advocacy. Go here, here and here for more on this. But the reference to legal education goes deeper. I think you can use the movie to discuss the most common topic of debate within legal education itself. Interestingly, however, in My Cousin Vinny, the issue is turned on its head. After Vinny’s girlfriend Mona Lisa bails him out for a second time after having been...
