I’d written approximately 18 songs by my senior year of highschool, enough to have an album. Along with it, I’d written a bunch of drafts, uncompleted pieces along with some chord progressions that in the future I would intertwine my lyrics with. However, I never had the capacity to display my work or talk about my struggles, especially that my problems seem to get out of hand. But man it felt so damn right to just let it all out in Keen or in the back of my notebooks in class when a word or phrase would come to mind. ‘Click!’ It was just like that or maybe the sound came first and whatever tone embodied the theme to my song. Since, I did not have a voice I seldom stood my own ground to whatever unfairness or circumstance that I felt I had no control over. Hence, my own autonomy crumbled within the silence that no one seemed to understand, not even my family members. I lived within the rules and games of the script until I broke free when I found the words. The innate desire to try everything, to risk it all went beyond the way I wanted to live, even if my insecurity and safety was in jeopardy. My writing wasn’t solely my release of all the emotions built up in me, it became part of my identity. A part of me was subtly quiet, keeping the commentaries to herself and presumably a pushover. In this song, I pick the first three strings with the capo on the twelfth fret to create a gentle, mellow harmony with the lyrics. The tone always captures the mood I’m in for that day, therefore I associate nostalgia and happiness with the mellow, chord progression. Inspired by dream pop tonalities and lyricism, the lyrics center on being spirit free, longing for the seemingly peaceful days and without the censure of the present. Memories should be, “Free of judgement, Free of distaste/ Free knowledge, Free distance/ Free of mind control”. My written work often deals with living in the past and fleeing from self-absorption, slightly transcendentalist. It incorporates indulging in living worry free amongst a systemic world where expectations and harsh criticisms are placed on individuals. Rather having to deal with a burden, it is up to the person to break away and live without the restraints of it.
