...Renaissance Reformation The Italian art produced during the Renaissance era did not show men as they really were, because their art made men look feminine as represented by their hair and their clothing. Renaissance ideas are expressed in the Italian are of the periods. The base there art of a humans features in their body and their characteristic. What that means is all there art was very vivid, because they love to draw the body of a human naked. To them it was true art, they did not put much detail into each paintings because they were not the Muslims, who drew every signal detail in an art. Men in art looked like females in the form of their face, they believe that men was so handsome that they should have the face of a female fix into the sculptor or painting. Therefore since the Italians were catholic, they to believe in God and his helpers. Francesco Mochi made a sculptor called Bust of a Youth. The Bust of the Youth was a sculptor of St. John. The sculptor was made out of marble on variegated black marble socle. The painting in people eyes looks like a young girl, but instead it was a male angle. St. John was the son of Zebedee, and the brother of St. James the Great, was called to be an Apostle by our Lord....

...a radical departure from the middle ages, instead of a radical departure, I believe it was simply a start of early modern period. The renaissance happened over centuries, many of the influential artist from the renaissance were separated by 100 years. Most of the changes were happening in the wealthy societies and not so much the poorer ones, which made up most of the population. The renaissance was a significant departure from the middle ages in history to us now, the major changes were more impactful collectively, however it was not as noticeable to people at the time it was happening. Parents were not telling their children, “okay kids hold onto your hats the rebirth is here!” The Renaissance was the start of the...

...inevitable progress of society, whether it be positive or negative, reflects clearly through many means. Towering Renaissance architecture and Victorian Palaces, different political systems and rulers, food and language and literature, each period consists its own uniqueness. Clothing is no exception. From the toga of the Romans to the gown of Elizabethans, clothing reflects on the taste and style of the people in that particular era. It is of relatively absolute truth to acknowledge that dress is more than an object of concealment. The physical body when dressed gave intimation about the personality of its wearer and the surrounding society as well. For example, Romans royals wore purple while its citizens garb in simple garments like tunic. In Renaissance era, men and women of noble births would wear satin, velvet decorative dresses, while the peasants would only drape in cheap clothes. The disparity in apparel between noble people and poor people is a quintessence of reflection on social orders. During these periods that segregate people according to their ranks, clothing is affected by the segregation as well. However, as we move into Colonial Period, the idea of ranks begin to dissolve. Instead, clothing is more synonymous with a person’s occupation and religious affiliation. Now in our contemporary society, a society of complete freedom and equality, clothing plays more a key role in expressing personality. From the roaring twenties with flapper’s pinafores and cloche...

...having a proto-renaissance style. This work of art is significant because it shows a sense of a belief. The belief of Peter and Andrew towards Jesus. The work of art has subtle details that tell a short story. When I look at this painting I look at the features of Jesus’s clothing, the rock Jesus stands upon, the boat that the men stand in, the fish net, and the gesture Jesus gives to Andrew and Peter. Firstly, to me, the boat symbolizes instability as it can sway from side to side giving an idea that the two men’s faith is not yet decided in a manner of speaking. The rock Jesus stand upon shows strength and stability within him; his faith. Jesus beckoning symbolizes a calling to him while saying that if they do then it will be fulfilling or rewarding due to the fishing net being full. Jesus’s clothing also symbolizes two different things. Firstly, the red coloring of his outfit symbolizes his passion in faith. The purple coloring of his outfit symbolizes his status in royalty. Buoninsegna also paints one of the men in a reddish color to possibly indicate his passion. There are also several small designs around the head of Jesus which could indicate a sort of halo. This halo would represent Jesus’s divinity. Also with Jesus being barefoot upon the rock would be an indication towards faith or the church. The subject of this work is about religion and communicates a new calling for Peter and Andrew towards Jesus. With the style being proto-renaissance, the artistic developments...

...The Renaissance, a period to which many changes in art, literature, and unexpected evolutions both took place. Those few changes helped to form the art we know today through influence and creativity. The Renaissance all started in Italy, making it the foremost change in the process. The term Renaissance means “rebirth,” and refers to a revival of art and learning through the 1300s to the 1600s. The cultural aspects of literature, art, and innovative ideas rolled along, infecting others with its hope and interesting contributions to the world. During the Renaissance, writers such as Petrarch and Boccaccio were the most influential and started the major changes in art. Many people call Francesco Petrarch the father of the Renaissance humanism. He wrote many poems and sonnets in which he portrayed a mysterious woman named Laura. Other Renaissance writers reflected their time, but they also used many of the techniques that we use today. Most writers wrote for two things: Self-expression or their own individuality as a person. This way, the writers began to begin trends in some ways that modern writers follow today. Many stories were written during this time period, Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio is best known for its series of realistic,...

...The Renaissance: Artists and Concepts The Italian Renaissance occurred from 1330 to 1550 on the heels of the Middle Ages in Italy and is described as one of the most influential times in art history. It brought about new ideas about art, science, and government. Feudalism which had been fiercely popular during the Middle Ages was beginning to trickle out of popularity while concepts such as humanism and Neo-Platonism started taking hold. The Renaissance is divided into the Early Renaissance which lasted from 1330 to 1450 and the High Renaissance which continued from 1450 to 1550. Many legendary artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Botticelli acquired their claim to fame during this time period. The Early Renaissance which began in 1330 introduced the concepts of Neo-Platonism and humanism. Neo-Platonism sought to reconcile humanism with Christianity, to blend the teachings of Plato and other ancient philosophers with the teachings of the Church. Humanism strove to portray lifelike human forms with correct proportions and realistic clothing and expressions. Artists developed new techniques to give paintings a more three-dimensional, life-like quality, and commonly studied human and animal anatomy in efforts to better understand their subjects. Sandro Botticelli is probably the best known and most influential painter from the Early Renaissance, although his works remained relatively unknown until several centuries later. The concept of Neo-Platonism and humanism can both...

...cleanses them. The technical characteristics of the painting would categorize it as Early Italian Renaissance, but has traces of Byzantine art as seen by the gold shine on Christ's robe. Above Christ’s head is a clear definition of a golden halo and represents his holiness as the son of God. The people painted in the image have shape and proportion underneath the draped clothing giving it a sense of scale and proportion. This is a characteristic that the Southern Italian artists uses due to their interest in the human anatomy. The perspective of the image is flipped up which is an attempt to giving dimension to the figures, but instead the illusion is indicated by stacked figures. Although, the doorway that Christ busted down shows the inner curves which gives the impression of the door’s dimension. By opening the cave, it allows for more space in the painting. The Moneylender and his Wife by Massys depicts a scene of a man occupied on weighing pearls, jewels, and coins on the table in front of him and this action is distracting his wife from reading a book. The two figures are symmetrically framed in the painting focusing the attention to them. Massys discretely paints the religious icon of Madonna and Child in the book that the wife is reading. This represents a sense of religious devotion to what the subjects, and artist, beliefs. The man and wife are wealthy according to their clothing, literal display of money, and the obscure detail of the fruit on the shelf. The clothes they...

...crime during the time period and was socially unacceptable. The character of Viola in Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night serves as an ideological tool to question the cultural discourse and contempt for women that cross-dressed in the Renaissance time period. As is the norm with most of Shakespeare’s heroines, Viola is a nearly faultless character that is very likable throughout the entire play. While the audience may be confused or turned off by her decision to dress as a man, it is easy to write-off because it is the basis for the entire plot of the play. After being shipwrecked and separated from her twin brother, Viola decides that she wants to serve the Countess Olivia, but finds it impossible. Instead, she decides to serve the Duke Orsino, and she must disguise herself as a boy in order to do this. Thus begins Viola’s second life as a young servant named Cesario. However, it should not be so easy to write-off this decision to cross-dress, and if the reader looks deeper into the implications behind this then they might be able to understand the cultural discourse of the times a little better. In his article “Cross-dressing, the Theater and Gender Struggle in Early Modern England”, Jean Howard comments at one point that Renaissance plays that included cross-dressing “do not in any direct way constitute "comments" on the cross dressing debates. The plays are not topical in that way, and in employing cross-dressing motifs they are using a staple of comic...

...Art and Renaissance Art By John Gramlick Trident University International The Baroque is a period and a particular style that was used to express motion with a clear interaction to detail that identified drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, literature, dance, and music. Baroque started on or about the 1600s in Rome, Italy and spread rapidly throughout Europe. Baroque’s style was a success with the Roman Catholic Church because it would be an art that would show life. There was a Roman Counsel in Trent that decided that this art would be displayed in every Roman Catholic Church. In addition the Protestant Reformation took Baroque art and decided that they would use this style in communicating religious themes that identified emotions. Baroque art also expressed triumphant power and control. Many of Baroques palaces were built around courts, grand staircases and reception rooms. Renaissance art was paintings and sculptures of a certain period in European history. This distinct style was started around the 1400’s which identified philosophy, literature, music and even science. This art was a rebirth of ancient traditions. The Europeans developed art with a scientific outlook. As the Renaissance art spread throughout Europe it impacted artist and patrons with the development of new techniques and artistic sensibilities. ...T. McDonald HUMA205 –Art Appreciation October 23, 2011 Comparison of Renaissance Art Website selection - Judtih (Giorgio da Castelfranco) circa 1504 The painting, ‘Judith’ by Giorgio da Castelfranco done around 1504, is one of many portraits depicting the scene of Judith and Holofernes from the Biblical Book of Judith. The legend states that the widow Judith endears herself to an enemy general, Holofernes, and subsequently beheads him as he lies drunk in his bed (Artlex, 2010). The death of their leader overwhelms the Assyrians and they disband leading many to the conclusion that the widow’s actions save Israel (Artlex, 2010). This representational piece is a two dimensional oil on canvas painting that exhibits soft tones in most of the image. The deeper or more vibrant shades of red near the bottom of the dress worn by the heroin stand out against the earthy browns and greens of the landscape of the scene. The pale pink of the skin of her bare foot which she has propped atop decapitated head of the general emphasizes the grayed and dying body part. The minimum contrast, or gray of the general’s head devalues it and makes it a part of the background while the viewer’s eye is drawn more to Judith and the light to dark shading of red or chiaroscuro of her dress. The landscape behind the courtyard is soft and almost appears monochromatic; it nearly blends into the horizon. There are natural shapes that are prominent in the painting but the sword at Judith’s side...

...The middle ages is a period that most certainly cannot be addressed as a period that no events occurred and all was so called "dark". Many Tragic events did happen, but during this period many events happened that weren't so dark. Such things as the rise of new Universities, the division of Christianity and the Renaissance. Let's begin to think of the middle ages as the birth of Western Civilization, instead of the images we have in our heads due to movies and high school history. During the High Middle Ages(1000CE-1300), ideas were changing, society became more interested in art, sports, education, and literature. Occupations and preoccupations differed from the feudal nobility and labouring peasants(McKay,Hill, Buckler,Crowston,Wiesner-Hanks, & Perry, 2012, p.298). Cities were now crowed and polluted and caused improvement in legal status. The sumptuary laws were laws that social groups needed to wear certain items clothing to distinguish from one another. The high social group wore velvet , silk, pearls while peasants wore dark clothing made of linen and wood blending(McKay,2012., p.300). So the interaction between the wealthy and peasants was common. Games and sports were a popular form of entertainment that united society. With that, Primary schooling was most of the time in monasteries, convents and cathedrals. By the 12th century the demand for trained officials increased, trade and feudalism were the cause of this development(History of Western Civilization...

Figures The whole painting consists of four primary figures that are noticeable from the first glance of the art piece. ...future ones. In this essay I will compare and contrast art from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance periods. A1. Earlier Historical Art Period The Middle-Ages is a period of time between the 5th and 15th century. Most art during the Middle-Ages was commissioned by the Catholic Church. Therefore the art tends to be mostly religious in nature and focused on creating symbols of Christian concepts and values. Artwork from this period served a purpose such as teaching spiritual truths and lessons, as a meditation aid, or even used to try and convert non-believers. Since the purpose of art during the Middle-Ages was to give glory to God, it was not common practice to seek personal recognition thus many pieces from this period went unsigned. Artists from the Middle-Ages didn’t focus on realism and most artwork from this period looked shallow, flat and lacked perspective. There was little to no use of lighting and shadow during this period. A2. Later Historical Art Period The Renaissance was a period of time between the 14th and 17th century. Art during the Renaissance period was used to show the beauty in nature which included human beings. Renaissance art often depicted everyday life and was very focused on realism and tried to portray things as they looked. There was more emphasis on the individual person and artists made heavy use light, shadow, and perspective. Artwork during the renaissance period was commissioned by people and groups not affiliated with the church and artists...
