...Coca-Cola The History The history of Coca-Cola began in May of 1886, when a pharmacist by the name of Dr. John Pemberton from Atlanta, Georgia first created the formula in his backyard in a three legged brass kettle. After making the caramel colored liquid, Dr. Pemberton, took his creation to the local pharmacy and mixed it with carbonated water. Every customer who sampled the concoction instantly loved it. Recognizing the potential of this new beverage, Jacob’s pharmacy was the first to sell the drink for five cents a glass (Cocal-colacompany.com). The caramel colored drink was later named “Coca-Cola” by Dr. Pemberton’s accountant and partner Frank Robinson, who wrote out the name, Coca-Cola, in his unique script handwriting which ultimately became the trademarked logo still used today. During the first year of Coca‑Cola, they sold about nine servings a day. Today, Coca‑Cola estimated a daily serving of 1.9 billion globally (Cocal-colacompany.com). Asa Candler, another pharmacist and a natural salesman, bought the Coca-Cola formula from Dr. Pemberton in 1887 for two thousand three hundred dollars. Distributions of Coca-Cola expanded beyond the borders of Atlanta and the business flourished under his leadership. He found inventive and creative ways to introduce this exciting new refreshment. Candler gave away coupons for free first tastes of the soft drink, and furnished distributing pharmacists with pitchers, clocks, and calendars displaying the Coca‑Cola name. Coca‑Cola...

...Coca Cola It's not surprising that Coca-Cola, probably the world's most recognized product (and certainly its most popular soft drink) has got a wide variety of popular stories about its beginning, its effects, and the ingredients used in Coke's famous secret formula. The most frequently heard story, that Coca-Cola originally contained cocaine, is, technically speaking, true. Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 by John Pemberton, an Atlanta, Georgia, and pharmacist. Pemberton was actually trying to make headache relief medicine, but once he mixed his special syrup with carbonated water, and a few customers tasted the result, he realized that he had the makings of a popular soda fountain beverage. The name Coca-Cola was coined by Pemberton's bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, who also wrote out the new name in the expressive script that has become Coca Cola's logo. Though the Coca-Cola Company apparently would rather not talk about the beginning of its name in detail, it's clear that Robinson thought of "Coca-Cola" from two of the drink's ingredients: cola from the cola nut, and extract of coca leaf, also the source of cocaine. Cocaine was a common ingredient of nineteenth-century patent medicines, and by the standards of the day Coca-Cola contained a minuscule amount that probably had no effect on its consumers. Still, by the early 1890s there was a rising tide of anti-cocaine sentiment, and Atlanta businessman As a Candler, who acquired the Coca Cola Company in 1891, steadily...

...Coke Versus Pepsi : Differences in Cultural History Rather than Taste Posted by Nicole Smith, Jan 16, 2012 Food And Drink No Comments Print For many years, Coca Cola and Pepsi have enjoyed the position as the two most enjoyed soft drinks in the USA, as they have maintained their popularity over the past several decades. One can divide soft drink fans into two major camps: Coke-lovers and Pepsi-lovers. Each of the camps substantiates its favoritism not only on flavor, but also on ideas, facts, and preferences that justify its choice and allow it to stay true to its selection. The following analysis of the history of Pepsi and Coca Cola explores Pepsi and Coke with an emphasis on advertising and cultural significance of these efforts, discovering what makes these soft drinks so popular and what differentiates them from each other. What emerges is that there is little in the way of differences between Coke and Pepsi outside of different cultural histories. There are many similarities between Coca Cola and Pepsi and the history of Coca Cola is nothing like the history of Pepsi outside of the fact that both companies were advertising soda. Both were intended to serve as recreational drinks associated with parties, fun, sex, and entertainment. The two drinks have just about the same color, the same amount of carbon dioxide, and have a similar taste. While in the past they both used different natural extracts from the coca nut, nowadays they both rely on artificial flavors and man-made...

...Ethics Case Study February 18, 2015 Coca-Cola began in 1886 when Atlanta pharmacist Dr. John Pemberton created a flavored syrup to be sold at soda fountains in Atlanta. After many years on the market Coca – Cola has become the world’s number one selling sparkling beverage. (Coca-Cola, 2015) To protect their brand their recipe has become a closely guarded secret. While competitors have attempted to duplicate their formula they have not come close which is why Joya Williams was aggressively prosecuting when she was caught attempting to sell trade secrets to their rival Pepsi Co. She was caught on camera taking top secret documents as well as samples of upcoming Coca-Cola products and placing them in her purse. It was also alleged that she wrote a letter to Pepsi Co. offering them the Coca-Cola trade secrets for a price of $1.5 million. The jury at trail initially was deadlocked however, under further review they found her guilty and she was sentenced to eight years in prison. The critical issues at hand are that the she violated the Uniform Trade Secrets Act as Coca-Cola keeps their secret recipe offsite in a bank vault. (Cheeseman, Pg. 396) She attempted to infringe upon their secrets for her own personal gain. She misappropriated the secret documents and samples as a result committing industrial and economic espionage. The stakeholders in this case are the employees of Coca-Cola, Pepsi Co. as well as the general public. If Pepsi Co. purchased the...

...exceptional marketing programs and well as aggressive business strategies have become recognized the world around. Many of these are part of our everyday life and if not then we see them every day in our comings and goings. Two of these world-wide brands that many of us know are also extremely similar in both product as well as marketing strategy. Those two brands are The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo, Inc. On May 8, 1886, a pharmacist named Dr. John Pemberton carried a jug of Coca-Cola syrup to Jacobs’ Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta, where it was mixed with carbonated water and sold for five cents a glass. (Our Heritage, 2012) Three years later in the summer of 1898 a young pharmacist named Caleb Bradham began experimenting with combinations of spices, juices and syrups, trying to create a refreshing new drink to serve to his customers. His success came in the form of the beverage now known around the world as Pepsi-Cola. (Pepsi Legacy, 2005) And from that day forward the rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi would become legendary. These two beverage companies are competing for the top spot in a massive global market. The cola and carbonated beverage industry reaches to nearly every corner of the planet, and the vast majority of the market share belongs to the two giants Coke and Pepsi. ...Coca-Cola: International Business Strategy For Globalization Dr. Michael Ba Banutu-Gomez, Professor, Management and Entrepreneurship, William G. Rohrer College of Business Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to analyze the efficiency of global strategies. This paper identified six key strategies necessary for firms to be successful when expanding globally. These strategies include differentiation, marketing, distribution, collaborative strategies, labor and management strategies, and diversification. Within this analysis, we chose to focus on the Coca-Cola Company because they have proven successful in their international operations and are one of the most recognized brands in the world. We performed an in-depth review of how effectively or ineffectively Coca-Cola has used each of the six strategies. The paper focused on Coca-Cola's operations in the United States, China, Belarus, Peru, and Morocco. The author used electronic journals from the various countries to determine how effective Coca-Cola was in these countries. The paper revealed that Coca-Cola was very successful in implementing strategies regardless of the country. However, the author learned that CocaCola did not effectively utilize all of the strategies in each country. Storytelling is the process of explaining real or fictional events through narrative (Storytelling, 2015). Complex ideas are depicted in an entertaining way or an emotional connection helps consumers remembering information (ibid.) by “building a picture of a company” (Bacon, 2013). It is said that people recall facts more easily when emotions are involved (Storytelling, 2015). Especially millennials, who have a shorter attention span and are exposed to an immense mass of information (2015), are more likely to remember an ad that is more interactive (Storytelling, 2015). Why Did I Select Coca-Cola? Coca-Cola is the soft drink giant par excellence – With a global market share of 25.9% in the soft drink market in 2011 (Statista website, 2015), the company has achieved what many companies dream of – Global brand recognition, meaning people can identify Coca-Cola without being directly exposed to the company’s name, but rather to its logo or colors (Brand Recognition, 2015). While both companies have had recent problems in emerging nations such as India by having their products be condemned for improper ingredients, a shakeup like this might be necessary to promote future growth for possibly undersold equities.
