2080 sounds like a long time from now, but it's not. 257,000 workers doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is. Climate change and new coffee diseases could make up to 90% of the world’s suitable farmland, unsuitable by the year 2080 (Zamora). This could mean the loss of jobs for 187,000 farmers and 257,000 workers in the 24 countries that currently produce coffee (Zamora). The loss of this cash crop in many low income countries could mean collapse. A good chunk of the world’s countries import coffee and drink it, in mass, every day. Coffee is one of the biggest exports by many countries in Central and South America. Production over the last couple years has been declining due to poor agricultural practices and lack of workers. Historians believe that coffee made its first appearance in Arabica near the Red Sea in 675 A.D. The National Coffee Association states that Coffee was first brought to America around the mid 1600s; however, tea was still the drink of choice. Coffee became one of the fastest growing exports in the world. This caused a lot of controversy because prices rose quickly, and exports sometimes never even made it to its destination. In 1940, a global coffee quota was created to implement rules and restrictions on the import and export of coffee. Once the word spread of this drink, many new plantations grew and made many people rich. Coffee became one of the world’s cash crops. According to the Coffee Encyclopedia, there are 30 known species of coffee beans, but only three: Arabica, robusta, and liberica beans are used for drinking and consumption. Harvesting usually takes place in their summer or our winter between the months of September and January. There is a short window in which the beans can be picked before they go bad. Coffee is harvested in cooler elevations but can be severely damaged if the temperature gets too low. It takes five years before a tree reaches maturity and produces a full yield. The average life of a coffee tree is 15-20 years before it starts to decline in total yield (Coffee Encyclopedia). The versatility of these trees is quite amazing and the number of things that can be done with the beans makes this tree one of the most important in the world.
