...a teenager I noticed that one of my mom’s biggest wishes was to have the opportunity for her child to go away to a University. Unfortunately she was never going to fulfill that dream though me because I had no intention of going to college. I hated school. My attitude was “college isn’t for everyone” and I let that be known to everyone who even uttered the word “college”. Every Sunday morning my mom would get me up and cook breakfast, we’d sit down at the table as she looked at all the sales ads. I always noticed that she enjoyed ads from Target and Wal-Mart those most. She would spend a lot of time looking the “Back to School” (particularly college) sales. She would just love looking at everything they had to decorate a dorm and etc. I would feel bad that I wasn’t the one to go away to college but the weight was lifted off of me when she started having more kids when I was 13 years old. When I was thirteen she had my little brother, and then when I was sixteen she had my little sister. My brother wasn’t exactly the studious type either. However my sister made decent grades and she is an excellent athlete. She was the best in basketball and track. My mother and myself know absolutely nothing about sports so for a long time we had no idea what kind of potential my sister had. It wasn’t until I attended one of my sister’s first track meets that I realized that she was good enough to get a scholarship. I knew that my mother would not be able to afford tuition at a university...

...Employment: Resumes and Letters Introduction Communication skills are the greatest assets in finding that job. Many important skills are needed to get a good job: investigating a targeted company, preparing a resume and letter of application, and writing a thank-you letter to follow up an interview. Researching Possible Employers Regardless of whether the job search is through the college, faculty or on our own, it is imperative to write many documents to secure the job, including a letter of application, a resume, and a thank-you letter after the interview. For all these documents, information of the targeted employer is essential so that the documents can be tailor made to the potential employer's needs. After we decide to apply for a job at a particular company or organization, we need to find as much information as possible about both the organization as a whole and the particular job applying to. While applying for a specific job opening there will be general information about the position in the job announcement. If we read the announcement carefully we can learn as much as possible about the position's requirements and the qualifications the employer is looking for. This information will guide us in preparing the resume and application letter. We can research the organization’ s website for general information about the organization and also search the Internet for articles and news items in the financial media. Preparing a Resume Preparing a resume is the most...

...“What Would You Do?” – Situation 1 Even though my relationship with my old roommate is important to me, I would not be able to put in a good word or get his resume into the “right hands.” I would be lying at my job (a place that I worked hard to even get into) and that could get me into a lot of trouble if the company realized that he does not actually have the knowledge he says he does. Here’s exactly what happened. My old college roommate got let go from his job and has asked me to help him become an employee at the company I work for. I told him that I have no problem putting in a good word and getting his resume in the “right hands” but then I saw his resume. The problem is that he greatly exaggerated pretty much everything single thing on his resume and expects me to not tell my boss that he actually does not have the knowledge he says he does so that he could get the job. There are a lot of people who can be put into harms way if I were to lie for my old college roommate. Those who are directly affected by this problem include me, my old roommate from college, the entire company I work for, my coworkers, and my boss. This problem would cause a lot of issues at my workplace if he were to get the job and mess up because he actually does not know how to do all the things he said he knew how to do on his resume. If I were to keep my mouth shut about him...

...BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION RESUME Part 1 of this series talking about how goal setting is the most important step for running an efficient job hunt. We have to have clearly written career goals. Forgetting to set our goals is not a good thing. In Part 1, I also provided some recommended resources so we can set our goals and get that part of our job search settled. Here is a quote worth repeating from that earlier article, Step 2 - Writing Our Business Card Resume Before our actually write our business card resume let's talk about how we are going to use it. Question: Who is the audience for the business card resume? We can play some Final Jeopardy music here if we like. Think about who gets our business card resume. Who will receive it and what will they do with it? Let me give we a few scenarios: We are at a networking event and we meet someone We are at Starbucks having coffee with someone and a third person comes up to say hello to our guest. We get introduced We meet someone who needs something and we want to offer help We need a job. We want to make sure everyone hearing our message knows that and our goals is to enlist our every contact to help we secure our next job. My recommendation is to keep our message simple. The obvious stuff for our business card resume is our name, phone number (mobile only)preferred email and all other possible ways to reach you. Then deliver a clear message (the one's on those sites are move involved) using the front or possibly...

...In a time when many companies are cutting costs across their operations, a growing number of HR departments are changing the ways they recruit. Their goal: to boost recruiting efficiency (reducing recruiting costs per hire). Their means: innovative recruiting approaches that bring imagination and aggressiveness to a company's overall recruiting function. Innovations are occuring in several elements of the recruiting process. Here is a look at innovations in several areas. Recruitment Advertising An increasing number of companies are supplementing and even replacing the traditional classified ad with creative, clever, eye-catching ads. These ads are essentially a company's resume and cover letter, designed to send a unique and memorable message about the company to sought-after prospective applicants. Recently, Personnel Journal reviewed several hundred ads submitted by subscribers and reported some trends in this type of advertising. They include: 1. Use of Employees in Ads Instead of the traditional testimonials, more company ads are spotlighting employees, talking about their skills, jobs, and accomplishments. For example, General Dynamics has run a series of ads that, by comparisons with great inventors, compliments profiled employees and their colleagues. For example, one ad hadline in the series proclaims, "We're looking for another Newton ...And another Newman: (Howard Newman, one of General Dynamic's senior project engineers). The ad's text showcases Mr. Newman's...

...How to Find a Job after Graduation After spending years studying and working towards the goal of graduating college, once that day comes it can be a little overwhelming. Thinking of finding a job and using the skills and knowledge you learned and worked so hard for; can be downright scary. First, you need to determine what kind of job you would like to have; then you must create a resume catering to the specifics of the job you will be applying for. Creating a resume that focuses on the skills and specifics that an employer in the field you wish to work, would look at and be impressed. Finally, the most critical portion is actually submitting your finished resume of qualifications to potential employers. Probable employers that would possibly appeal to you can easily be found in many ways; online job postings, job fairs, and the traditional way of making a list of companies you are interested in and simply going in asking for an application and dropping off your resume. Once you have submitted your application for employment and resume, hopefully you should hear from the company for an invitation for an interview. Going into a job interview can be nerve-racking, but this is the moment you have to believe in yourself and your qualifications for the position. You will have to push all emotions to the side and focus on what’s at stake; your future job. You have to prove yourself, in a face to face interview with a prospective employer. It is imperative that you dress professionally...

Academic Assessment Goal The Student Portfolio serves as an ongoing academic assessment tool that documents your learning and academic accomplishments. As you progress through a curriculum, the portfolio depicts the progress you are making in acquiring the skills and competencies necessary to be successful in lifelong career pursuits. Career Readiness Goal The Student Portfolio serves as an important means of communicating your résumé and credentials to potential employers, as you search for both internship and full-time job opportunities. The portfolio is an effective career tool that offers value far beyond the standard résumé. Potential employers can readily examine multiple aspects of your accomplishments and skill sets in order...

...familiar with other online university programs, and what they offer, because Bethel was my first choice. However, in the small amount of time I've been "attending" Bethel, I can't imagine how other online universities can compare. When you think about an "online university", you think about all of those commercials you see on television, for colleges you've never even heard of, that have no real campus. You imagine the students sitting at home alone, turning in assignments to their "teachers", whom they will probably never meet. That doesn't seem like college to me. With Bethel, so far I have met not only numerous members of the faculty and staff, but also my classmates! My actual classmates, that I'll be embarking on this journey with. Bethel is also a "real college" to me. I have friends that live on the main campus in McKenzie, TN, and attend class almost every day! It's not just some "online university" that no one has ever seen/heard of....
