...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study In any educational system there are three primary aspects of the learning-teaching process which are geared towards its end goal- that of growth and progress in knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes of the students. First, educational goals are established either implicitly or explicitly. Secondly, learning experiences are designed to carry out the attainment of the goals. Finally, an evaluation is conducted to determine the extent to which the objectives have been established. This evaluation aspect has become the focus of study in the educational field. Evaluation involves the summing-up processes in which value judgments play a large part, as in grading and promoting students. Most educators considered that a school’s main business is promoting growth towards desirable and societal objectives; fewer agree on who should judge the desirability of these objectives. However, since all schools focus on student progress as the ultimate criterion, it is important to evaluate the status and gains of students expertly. If our evaluation procedures are poor, then the quality of the information on which we make judgments can not be adequate. Measurement and evaluation are indispensable to the growth of scientific education. They encompass judgments made by teachers and administrators. Since 1947, American history has portrayed Jackie Robinson as a hero, and he has been idolized as a role model to the African American baseball community. The topic of Robinson’s role in integration has long been a point of discussion amongst baseball historians. While attending undergraduate school, I was taught to not address diversity issues unless the student/child brings up the issue in order not to disrespect diverse backgrounds. The first step in breaking down cultural barriers is to allow students to ask questions about the issues which concern them. This lesson also alerted me that when having a conversation in the classroom dealing with diversity and cultural backgrounds, there needs to be structure and rules about the expectations during the discussion. Dilg (2003) explained that ignoring sensitive topics bring about misunderstandings and denies guidance in dealing with certain subjects. Conversations across the classroom allow students to interact with the many different backgrounds of their classmates and to understand the cultural differences, just by dialogue. The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941 resulted in President Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 0966 on February 19th 1942, which effected all Japanese ancestry, both citizens and aliens living in America or outside of the Pacific zone. The Executive Order's primary objective were to prevent any espionage and to protect the Japanese people from any harm against Americans who slowly began to become very strong anti-Japanese people who were growing their hate and racial discrimination to the Japanese due to the bombing. With the Executive Order in act, if affected “117,000 people of Japanese descent, two-thirds of whom were native-born citizens of the United States” (as stated through the National Archives.) Evacuation orders were posted in Japanese American communities giving them instructions on what they were to do. This included the Issei who were the first generation Japanese to immigrate to American and also the Nisei who were the second generation Japanese in America. The Japanese were allotted a few days to pack whatever they could and bring it with them. Many families had to sell off their homes, businesses and their belongings at a much lower price they had purchased it for. The 117,000 people of Japanese decent living in the U.S were later removed from their homes and moved to internment camps to prove their loyalty to the United States. During...
