...of the most tragic and deadly days in US history. Columbine High School was in the forefront of this tragedy. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, opened fire on their fellow classmates and teacher. These two students cut the lives short of thirteen students and one teacher. They then turned their guns onto themselves leaving the nation with no answers as to why? They did leave videotape. This videotape contained Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold planning their attack on Columbine High School. This piece of evidence showed two students that were not part of the "in crowd". They were outsiders, losers, as some would consider them. They were taunted, humiliated, and disrespected by their classmates. But how can two intelligent students do something as deadly as they did. Was it because they had bad parents? Not at all, they even went out of their way to save their parents the blame by repeatedly saying that it was not their fault that they were about to do what they did. So what was the cause of all this tragedy and how can it be stopped so it can never happen again in our middle schools and high schools? Elliot Aronson a social psychologist wrote a book called Nobody Left to Hate, Teaching Compassion After Columbine. This book represents his ideas on how to use certain strategies to have a better school environment that teaches compassion, tolerance while putting education in a winning situation. Aronson discusses the Columbine High School in depth, talking about the short cut...

...Running head: SERIAL KILLER PAPER Serial Killer Paper: The Columbine Tragedy Carsyn Ehlinger DMACC Abstract The Columbine Massacre was a school shooting that took place on April 20th, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado. Shooters Eric Harris, and Dylan Klebold killed 13 in what was then the biggest school shooting. The Columbine massacre is a topic of interest because it was one of the first heavily reported mass shootings, and had been handled poorly by law enforcement. Today Columbine stands as an example for law enforcement, and is one of the most popular copy-cat murders. On April 20th, 1999, only seventeen days before senior graduation, students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold entered Columbine High School and killing twelve students, one teacher, and injuring many more before taking their own lives....

...Madison Brown Forty-nine minutes. That is all it took for students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, to forever change the lives of the people of Columbine High School. By using bombs, guns and other dangerous weapons, these two boys were able to kill and severely injure a total of thirty-three members of the school. It all started on the morning of April 20, 1999. Harris and Klebold planted bombs near the nearest fire station, that were set to go off at a certain time, hoping they would distract firefighters and other emergency personal. Then the two drove to park in the junior and senior parking lots, planting bombs in their cars. Right before the school’s first lunch began; Harris and Klebold hid bombs in two separate duffel bags, and placed them in the cafeteria, alongside many other bags assembled there. As the first lunch bell rang, the two walked out to their cars, awaiting the explosions of the bombs. While the boys awaited the explosions, they gathered their guns together, ready to shoot any people fleeing the school. When it became apparent to the shooters that the bomb was not going to explode, they armed...

...On October 23, 2013, two students were shot, and a math teacher killed, by a 12-year-old who later turned the gun on himself at Sparks Middle School in Nevada. On April 20, 1999, two students shot 21 students and killed 12, one being a teacher, at Columbine High School, which came to be known as the Columbine High School Massacre. What both these school shootings have in common is that the shooters were all believed to be victims of bullying. Many people believe that this issue may be with gun control. They ask questions like, “How are these students getting their hands on these weapons,” and “How can we ensure the protection of other students from these weapons?” However, the real issue here relies on bullying. Bullying is the root of the...

...Imagine deciphering Shakespeare or explaining how to construct thesis statements and someone interrupts the lesson by walking in the room. These interruptions occur on a daily basis, usually by an office aid delivering a student pass or a principal conducting observations. The interruptions have become so routine that they no longer classify as “interruptions.” In fact, students and teachers have become rather cavalier to people walking in and out of classrooms throughout the day; at no point does anyone seem to suspect anything out of the ordinary would occur. However, what if the person walking in just started shooting people? What means would the teacher and students have to defend themselves? Although Columbine was not the first, school...

...1) In the Columbine massacre, two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were responsible for the bombing and the shootout of 12 students and a teacher. Probably they wanted to create a similar or bigger mishap than the Oklahoma Bombing. This kind of morbid psychotic behaviour is a result of derailment or failure of male adolescent development since they were teenagers. 2) In developing his theory of psychosocial development, Erik Erikson emphasized the importance of taking into account the social context of the individual when thinking about the process of identity formation. He believed that human beings have an innate need to develop and that society is constructed to meet this need. That is, development occurs as a result of...

...manufacturing giant MMI, has a great team. Everyone works hard and gets along. Everyone, that is, except Max Dyer. Max is a talented programmer, but he's terrible in the interpersonal skills department. So terrible, in fact, that three years ago Lynne reworked his job after employees complained that he was unengaged and even belligerent. Since then, he's been a solid worker, putting in extra hours and meriting good performance evaluations. But recently, Max's coworkers have noticed a change for the worse in him. True, everyone at MMI is on edge after a round of layoffs, but Max's behavior seems like more than a case of the jitters. To make matters worse, reports of a workplace shooting in Seattle are all over the news. Paige overhears Max shouting at someone on the phone. George finds Max pinning up a certificate from a shooting range in his cubicle, and Nicole, who worries they will all end up as statistics of office violence, wants to know how Lynne plans to ensure their safety. When Lynne tries to talk to Max, it's clear he thinks his coworkers are out to get him. And the truth is, they believe he fits the profile of a man on the edge. But what can Lynne do about an employee who has never made so much as a veiled threat to anyone? ...Preventing and Intervention for School Violence Project Summary Research evidence indicates that school violence has increased over the past years. The Federal Government has made a committed to ensure school safety and reduce school violence. The “Let my Child Live Foundation” grant application report that I have created will seek to develop reality based intelligence and find out what works to promote safety and healthy environments in the school. We hope to collaborate with juvenile law enforcement personnel, psychiatrist, psychologists and the entire school system to achieve the needed grants and funding. There are many things that we hope to accomplish. If grants are given to this program we will strive to reach our number one goal which is to create a safe school environment, mandatory prevention strategies that every school is mandated to use. There will be student behavioral, emotional and social support given throughout the entire school year. We also hope to achieve substance abuse prevention, on campus mental health services and annual mental health screenings. The schools will also have social and emotional learning programs available to each child early on. School violence has penetrated our nation for quite some time now. School violence is on the rise, and society is wondering why. Violence has injured and killed our youth. The question we must ask is “why are our youth so angry”? The program will work toward providing school and communities in the Chicago...

...Teachers and Weapons in Schools Jessica Rhodes Composition II WI12 Instructor S. Cochran February 10, 2013 Abstract In this paper, I will explore the controversial question of whether teachers should be allowed or required to carry weapons on school campuses. The question of whether the topic should be entertained has come up time and again after tragedies occur, the timeline of which will be summarized herein. The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that devastated the nation on December 14, 2012, has wrenched this debate crudely back into the spotlight. I will investigate different types of protective instruments that could possibly be used, as well as what types are used in schools that have such regulations. I will delve into the reasoning behind states that have implemented laws that allow teachers to carry guns in school and/or at school events. Included within are excerpts from this writer’s first-person interview conducted with Maria Otero-Ball, a kindergarten teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a teacher of children the same age as those involved in the Newtown tragedy, Mrs. Otero-Ball offers a first-hand view on the changes that she and the school have made following the tragedy, as well as her views on the practicality of weapons in the school. My goals in preparing this paper are to expand my thoughts on the subject, peruse the thoughts of others, and explore the statistics to provide a better overall understanding of...

...School Shootings When I think of school shootings my mind immediately goes back to the Columbine High school shooting. This was the first school shooting that I was actually old enough to remember and understand. I still remember having a moment of silence for all of those involved. The New world encyclopedia states “Columbine High School shooting was one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The incident drew worldwide attention. It led to widespread discussion over gun control and the prevention of school violence.” (Funk & Wagnalls) According to Wikipedia from 2011 to 2015 there has been 99 school shootings including grade schools, high schools, and colleges. This is a problem that needs more national attention in my opinion in order for there to be some form of change. The killers in school shootings (mass shootings) are what we call mass murderers, they typically want to send a message. It was stated the two students in Columbine sought revenge on bullies; this shooting/bombing was meant to send the message to them. According to a few articles I read they define their personalities as, “pseudocommando” these individuals kill in public during the daytime, plan their offense well in advance, and come prepared with arsenal of weapons, very similar to that of the school shooting killers. (Knoll) According to Warnick, the children...

...Honesty is the Best Policy There once was a archer named Jordan. Jordan loved to compete in archery contests. He was a proficient shooter with a bow. Even though Jordan was a good shooter he was very poor. Jordan had lost all but on of his arrows on a hunt for food. One day Jordan was at a outdoor shooting range. Jordan practiced shooting at a orange painted hay bail that was in the trees. He was hitting the bulls eye with ease so he went on to a new target. Jordan’s next target was not as easy it was no longer a straight shot. He would have to figure a way to get a clear shot off threw all the trees. He got all set up he was ready to make his shot when a squirrel jumps on him and he fires his last arrow randomly into the trees. Jordan is upset that he has lost his last arrow and calls for help. A woman appears and says that she will help him look for his arrow. Jordan and the woman both set off in different directions in the trees to retrieve the arrow. Minutes later the woman returns to Jordan with a golden arrow and asks Jordan if it is his. Jordan replies honestly to the woman saying that it is not his lost arrow and it could be someone’s last arrow so he would feel bad for taking it. Jordan and the woman set off again to find the arrow. A short time later the woman returns again this time she is holding a silver arrow. The woman again asks Jordan if it is his arrow. Jordan replies honestly again saying that it is not his arrow. The two again set off...
