Television News Program Analysis
COM/310

July 15th, 2014

The following paper evaluates and analyzes a news story broadcast by three different networks on January 28, 2012, that became one of the first world disasters that made me start to rethink my view of the media and their biases and responsibilities to their community. How the story was covered, presented, and ultimately how the programs affected my personal values will be discussed. The three news networks chosen for this paper are BBC, CBS, and CNN. A Costa Concordia cruise ship capsized near Giglio, Italy on January 13, 2012. Today, January 28th, divers continue to seek out missing passengers, charges are being filed against the ship’s captain, and lawsuits on behalf of passengers and crew are mounting.
BBC News Network (January 28, 2012 – Giglio, Italy) According to a BBC (2012) reporter, the body of a woman has been found in the capsized ship, Costa Concordia, bringing the known death count to 12. The woman was wearing a life jacket and located on the fourth deck. Out of 4,200 people, including passengers and crew, twenty people have not been accounted for. Captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino (or Capt. Coward, as he has been dubbed by the media), is being investigated for manslaughter on the legal level and for abandoning ship on moral and ethical issues. The female body found today was located in an area near the rear of the ship designated as an evacuation meeting point. DNA will be used to identify the woman after a full week in the water. A rescue official stated they would not terminate the rescue mission until every area of the ship had been thoroughly searched. The Italian government worries there may be a fuel leak, but collection of the fuel cannot be activated until rescue workers have completed their search. An Italian naval ship is standing by in the event of an oil leak. On Friday, the BBC reported Costa Concordia is facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States. Two United States law firms and Italy’s consumer association (Codacons) confirmed today they would be filing suit against Costa Cruises on behalf of many passengers. They will be seeking a minimum of $160,000 (£105,000) per passenger.
CBS News Network (January 28, 2012 – Giglio, Italy) CBS associate, Allen Pizzey, reported divers at the Costa Concordia wreck have recovered what they believe to be the hard drive as well as two cameras from the ship’s bridge. Authorities are hopeful that these three items will divulge an accurate account of what happened on the night the luxury cruise ship ran aground and capsized. Rescuers are focusing their search on the fifth level where passengers would have been instructed to go for evacuation. However, Capt. Schettino did not follow proper procedure for informing passengers of what to do and where to go in the event of a disaster such as the one that occurred; consequently, many passengers did the best they could to save themselves. One hundred and twenty Americans are being represented in a class-action suit against Costa Cruises and their parent company, Carnival Cruise Lines. Damages for emotional distress and loss of property are said to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Lawsuits representing several nationalities will be launched in their respective countries. The removal of 500,000 gallons of fuel will be removed from the ship when the search for survivors and bodies terminates.
CNN News Network (January 28, 2012 – Giglio, Italy) Costa Concordia, a subsidiary of Carnival Cruises, reportedly offered the approximately 3,200 passengers 11,000 euros ($14,400), as compensation for property loss and emotional distress. Additionally, Costa would refund the full amount of charges for the cruise. Families of those who died as a result of the accident and injured passengers will be offered a separate agreement. A New York-based law firm’s senior partner, Marc Bern, told CNN’s Livia Borghese they will be filing suit on behalf of six passengers, and expect many more to join their clients. The lawsuit requests “economic and compensatory damages in excess of $10 million and a minimum of $450 million in punitive damages. The woman found Saturday on the fourth level was wearing a uniform, suggesting she was a crewmember. Fifteen of the bodies recovered have been identified, leaving two requiring DNA testing. Discovery of the 17th body has launch additional lawsuits, and many more are expected from the United States and other countries. On board the Costa Concordia were 129 Americans, 18 Argentines, 21 Australian, 74 Austrians, 47 Brazilians, 25 British, 12 Canadians, 10 Chileans, 38 Chinese, 10 Colombians, 127 Croatians, 11 Dominican, 34 Dutch, 462 French, 569 Germans, 11 Hungarians, 989 Italians, 12 Poles, 11 Portuguese, 10 Romanian, 108 Russian, 177 Spanish, 69 Swiss, 13 Taiwanese, 45 Ukrainian, and numbers less than ten from a dozen other countries. The number of fatalities and missing (-/-) by nationality to-date are American (-/2); French (4/2); German (3/7); Hungarian (1/-); Indian (-/1); Italian (3/4); Peruvian (1/-); Spanish (1/-); Unidentified (4/-), for a total of 17 fatalities and 16 missing. Italy’s civil protection agency announced their intention to remove 2,400 tons of fuel from the ship, at the earliest, on Tuesday due to inclement weather.
Point of View? We are supposed to believe what we see and hear on the news because news reporting should be objective; therefore, it must be true. News reports are supposed to be objective, but that does not always happen. Depending on the network, the public will be told what they want us to know. The points of view represented in these segments differ by network. BBC seems to focus on the latest recovery of the female crewmember, the idiocy of the captain, and the numerous lawsuits to come. CBS reports the black box and cameras recovered, but fails to mention the woman’s body recovered just this morning. CNN, on the other hand, leads with the lawsuits and barely mentions the woman found, although the CNN reporter did state the woman was wearing a uniform, and the other networks did not mention that. There are a number of inconsistencies in the accounts by the three news networks, but I do believe it is due to an error in reporting. Beginning with the total number of bodies recovered as of Saturday, January 28, 2012, the BBC claims 12, CBS does not mention the total fatalities, and CNN puts the total at 17, with the recovery of the woman on the fourth level Saturday morning. The number of gallons of fuel that needs to be removed from the ship are also contradictory: CBS states 500,000 gallons (15,745 tons of fuel @ 6.037 lbs. per gallon), and CNN quotes the total fuel as 2,400 tons (795,097 gallons); quite a difference between the two numbers. Again, I believe this is erroneous reporting as opposed to any effort to misinform the public.
Representation of Social Groups Social groups, individuals linked by a common denominator, mentioned in the three segments are: • BBC – passengers, law firms, and rescue workers • CBS – rescuers and Americans • CNN – passengers and crew by nationality, law firms, and Italy’s civil protection agency
Face-value or Sensationalism? I often feel the media is playing to a specific social or ethnic group when reporting, but after scrutinizing the three segments I did not find any evidence of that in these reports. However, I would like to from a peer-reviewed article by Christopher E. Beaudoin & Esther Thorson, The Social Capital of Blacks and Whites: Differing Effects of the Mass Media in the United States: “Previous research has demonstrated a consistent pattern of relationships between mass media use and social capital. News use is positively associated with social capital (Beaudoin & Thorson, 2004; Norris, 1996, 2000; Putnam, 2000; Shah, Kwak, & Holbert, 2001). Thus, people who have high levels of newspaper readership and TV news viewing have higher levels of social capital indicators, including association membership, neighborliness, civic engagement, and social trust. For example, Brehm and Rahn (1997) demonstrated that newspaper readership was a positive predictor of civic engagement. In contrast, entertainment TV viewing is negatively associated with social capital (Beaudoin & Thorson; Brehm & Rahn; Norris, 1996, 2000; Shah, Kwak, et al., 2001). For example, Putnam (2000) demonstrated a 10% reduction in civic participation as a result of each additional hour that people watch television per day. In explaining these findings, Putnam (1995b, 2000) contended that the more time people devote to television, the less time they have to interact socially and participate civically. Putnam (1995b) wrote, ‘‘TV watching comes at the expense of nearly every social activity outside the home, especially social gatherings and informal conversations’’ (pp. 678–679).”

...Communication Theories XXXXXXXXX COM/310 February 17, 14 XXXXXXX Communication Theories Anthony Robbins said, “The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives” (Robbins (2013)). By analyzing different communication theories of our past, we will be able to understand how the theories can be applied to the future communication process of our social and professional lives. Each theory can give us an insight to not only how we are portrayed, but also as how we might communicate to others without preconceived notions. There have been many theories discussed and introduced over the years, but only three will be discussed in this paper. Each theory, Violations Theory (EVT), Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT), and Organizational Culture Theory will be described, and how the theory applied to some facet of my life. Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT) The communication process includes spoken, written, and non-verbal actions. “The Expectancy Violations Theory (EVT) suggests that people hold expectations about the nonverbal behavior of others” (West & Turner, 2010, p. 130). The theory suggests that proxemic zones and personal space are part of the nonverbal behaviors involved. The personal space is often based on each person own expectations. Some people consider their personal space much larger than those of others. When I met the wife of my good friend, I did not know of her anxieties about personal space...

...accurate and reliable. This guide is to help assess reputable websites. Surfing the WEB There is a lot of information available on the World Wide Web today. Deciphering what is accurate and creditable requires a closer look. When accessing information, these steps should be followed. First, locate the authors name, look for any credentials, locate the contact information, and what authority does the author have on this topic. Second, take note on who published the site, what links are connected to it and at the bottom of the web page look for the date of publication. Examine the domain or URL. Dot gov means a US government site, .mil means a US military site, and .edu means an accredited post secondary educational institution. Dot com means a commercial for profit site, .org means a noncommercial, not for profit entity, .net means a computer network, and .int means an international organization. Lastly, determine the sites purpose. Is it trying to sell something, persuade you, or just providing you with information. Investigating the areas will aid in evaluating websites. The author may have a PhD or be a professor but that does not make him and expert on topics not related to the field of practice or study. Taking not on the publishers helps determine the motive and correlation to the author. Looking at the date of publication helps determine how recent the information is and when last updated. Individual Analyzing Internet Sources Week 2

...Individual Analyzing Internet Sources Week 2 What did you learn? I learned more than I expected from the Pearson student lab activities. In the first activity I knew most of the information presented, but in the second activity I learned quite a bit about researching a topic. I did not know that the URL .org is no longer limited to a non-profit or research organization; which makes it harder to use that as a reliable resource but it can still be useful. I learned it is important to look for non-bias opinions, information with publish dates are resourceful, research based, and the best domains to find good information on are .org, .gov, .mil, and .edu. Although just because the site has one of these domains it does not mean the resource is accurate or correct necessarily. What did you not learn? Well as I said in the previous paragraph in the first activity most of the information that was present I acquired before. The comparison between the library and the internet are basic knowledge to most people. The Library is based for research purposes, with trained staff to help you, but closes at certain times. The internet has multiple reasons for use, with no trained assistance, but it never closes. They each have great traits that can be used for study. I also knew it is not safe to purchase items online you must be careful when doing this. You need to do research and make sure the site is reliable. Some people think because a paper has a title and author that it is true but...

...if I should sit Alfred Zingale and Matthias Arndt next to each other. It wasn’t that I was worried about conflicting views, actually it was quiet the contrary, and I didn’t want them to be able to double team the other guests. Finally I decided that just because they have essentially the same opinions, I wouldn’t separate them. In my mind they come as a unit because they had co-authored a book. The place cards had been set and I made up my mind that I would do no more rearranging. I bent over the table in my grey sleeveless dress and lit the deep red candles that were extending upward out of the floral arrangement. The guests would be arriving soon and I began to think over the whole situation. Each person has written a book about the dot com industry, how they can be successful as well as how to invest wisely in one. I was hoping to learn a lot of information so I could make a good decision on whether my company would benefit from being online. These thoughts drifted through my head until the doorbell rang. I opened the door to a short plump woman with reddish brown hair in her late 40’s was standing on my stoop. She wore a pale green dress suit, but looked quite attractive. She extended her arm, shook my hand and introduced herself as Anita Rosen. As the only woman who was attending the dinner party that night, it was a given who she was, but all the same she was quite pleasant. John Cassidy was next to arrive. He looked like the typical “guy next door” type. I bet he...

History of the Internet: Dot Com Bubble

...The dot-com bubble that occured in the 1990's through the early 2000's was said to have left some major negative impressions on the world of the internet and our economy, but that is not necessarily true. Because of the dot-com bubble, there have been many great outcomes that often goes unnoticed before looking past all of the businesses and internet companies that went under when this bubble finally burst in the early 2000's. In fact, many say that the dot-com bubble and burst was actually a needed cause and effect that has shaped the internet into what it now is today. Many people believe that a lot of the websites that existed during the dot-com bubble would have had some sort of success if it wasn't for the network infrastructure at the time. The thing is, not many people didn't have access to broadband and the websites weren't getting the exposure and full potential that it could have received. This is especially true for some websites, such as Broadcast.com (Altucher Confidential, 2011). This very same thought occurred during the dot-com bubble and computer scientists and engineers realized that there was a very much needed improvement to the infrastructure of the internet. In order to correct this, many businesses in the tech industry began using tax money to lay high-speed fiber optic cables so that the internet would be more accessible in certain cities and states. This is probably one of the most beneficial things that came about from the dot-com bubble because...

Cisco Case Study

...In the past ten to fifteen years, Cisco has changed its marketing channel strategy majorly. While in the past Cisco was only focused on the volume of their business, they reconfigured their strategy to focus in on the value of business. Previously business was transferred through Cisco’s partners and retailers, who worked with customers to make deals and fill orders. Under their newer value-based strategy, their VARs, or value-added channel resellers, work directly with customers to ensure they are receiving the best value products and latest technologies. These VARs were able to work with large accounts as well as small to mid size accounts by offering specializations and value in niche markets or specific regions. Using this method makes it impossible to structure the strategy based on volume, because it is unfeasible to rate resellers effectively based on volume of sales when the focus is so highly placed on quality and value of the sale. Resellers and channel members were rated based on the value that they brought to the table rather than the volume of sales, making it easier for lower-tiered members to gain high status based on the value that they brought to the table. For example, a member that previously did not generate nearly enough sales to be considered a top-tiered reseller would now be able to achieve a higher status if the value of their service and specializations were up to par. This creates a stronger relationship between the customer and the VAR, thus increasing...

History of Internet A pioneer of the creation the internet was Tim Berners-Lee. Though the internet didn’t become wide spread until the early 1990s the making of the World Wide Web can be traced back into the 1980s. Berners-Lee tried to sell his creation to the company that he was working for in Switzerland, but they were slow to acknowledge his efforts.(Griffin, 2000) With that Berners-Lee turned to the internet community in 1991 making his World Wide Web browser and web server software available.
