...“Faster, faster… come on!” I urged under my breath, pedaling furiously. A thunderstorm had started, I was soaked to my skin, my stomach was growling and yet my bicycle refused to move faster. Getting back home was quite literally an uphill task as it was on top of a hill, sitting like a cream colored cherry on top of a green colored hill. The rain was not helping my quest to get back home in time for a nourishing dinner and a full night’s sleep, both of which had been recently denied to me due to the pressures of my new job. Avoiding the puddles formed in the potholes of the road, I made my way forward slowly but steadily. Thoughts of my father crept into my mind. His smile, his booming laughter, the fierce frown when someone, anyone, told him what to do were my most vivid memories. He had departed for his next life now; a tumor in his lungs made sure of that. Even though it had now been a year since his death, I still missed him. My mother had left me and my father when I was a mere 3-year old girl, impressionable and then, heart-broken. I have never trusted anyone completely ever since. I huffed and puffed up the hill and when I was close enough, I saw something which made my blood run cold. A streak of lightning. A fire. On the very top of the hill. I cycled like I had never cycled before. Memories of my father building the house swirled into my mind, too fast to separate. Panic seized my throat. I could not let it burn down. It was my only tangible...

If there are many of problems that need training then there will be more training available. But there is training available each month on what is needed to be worked on. * Delivery: * The best method for conducting this training would be to have in-services aka training classes. First upon hiring each employee must pass the pre test for qualification for the position. Then have complete training during orientation then. There will be a monthly in-service where all employees come and must be re trained on this information. They must pass the in-service if the employee doesn’t pass the in-service they can come re do the training class that is held on certain dates for non passing. * Evaluation: * I will evaluate the...

...Jamaican Cinema (focus – The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, Jamaica, 1971) ‘Representing Jamaican culture on the screen, how The Harder They Come triggered the development of Jamaican cinema.’ The Harder They Come was the first movie made in Jamaica, directed by a Jamaican and with a Jamaican theme. The film opened the country’s eyes to the creation of film and the industry that surrounds it. It also gave the world (particularly the West) its first filmic taste of the cultural, social and historical issues of 20th century Jamaica. It was not only successful in the eyes of its audience but also in the eyes of film critics worldwide. Geoff Parker writes “Indisputably the greatest Jamaican film ever made, The Harder They Come is also one of the finest films yet made about the third world.” (2001). At first glance Perry Henzell appears to be using a narrative to document Jamaican roots Reggae music (especially that of Jimmy Cliff); but although The Harder They Come went a long way towards creating a huge global Reggae following the film had many other underlying issues. Even though most critics (Cham, Parker, Yearwood and others) discuss the film as the one that popularised Reggae music in the West it is the task here to illustrate that The Harder They Come brought Jamaican society and its culture into cinematic visibility. Cinema in Jamaica had only a western and predominantly Hollywood face until the release of The Harder They Come, but the meta-filmic self awareness...

...minute or two, they finally reconciled and I was able to pass my answer sheet even before the time ran out. I made a pig of myself while eating our lunch; I was acting like I had never eaten for years but can you blame me? I was really exhausted after taking the test. Finally, the result came in no time and I almost jumped out of joy when the emcee called my name as one of the qualifiers for the next round. I never really expected it to happen but I should keep going because I know that now, the fun starts. I, together with my fellow qualified students then sat to our designated seats waited for our interview, the elimination round. When I was called to come on stage, I then entered a portal to my Miss Universe pageant. When a series of questions were thrown to me, I caught it all by answering it with confidence; it’s like a dream come true! Only that I...

...Lies “Lies” is a short story written by Ethan Cain in 1988. The story is about Jack, an almost 18 – year old boy. He is kicked out of his parent`s house, but that was actually one of his own wishes. He works in a small theatre called Able`s where he sells tickets half of the time and works as a projectionist the other half of the time. Able`s is also the place where he meets his girlfriend, Katy. He does not love Katy at the very beginning, but after a couple of dates, he actually begins to fall in love with her. As the time goes by, Katy invites him to her sister`s wedding, and Jack gets the opportunity to meet Katy`s parents. After that, they plan to get married in November. But Jack has a second wish, which is to go up to Fountain Lake with Katy. One day Jack sees Katy in a red Cadillac, and together they go up to the Fountain Lake, and his dream becomes true. Jack is two months away to be 18 years old. He is not a boy no more, but a man who is about to get married. “Some guys my age are kids, but I`m eighteen and getting married that`s a big difference” (P 8, L 4-5). Jack sees himself as a grown man, who can take care of his own life. He feels that he is different than anybody else. I do not think that he had any role models he could look up to, so he decided to take care of his own. “Nobody ever told me they loved me before, except my mother, which is obvious” (P 2, L 1-2). It seems like Jack did not get any support from his family, especially not from his father. His...

...The Alchemist Paulo Coelho Translated by Alan R. Clarke. Published 1992. ISBN 0-7225-3293-8. PART ONE The boy's name was Santiago. Dusk was falling as the boy arrived with his herd at an abandoned church. The roof had fallen in long ago, and an enormous sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy had once stood. He decided to spend the night there. He saw to it that all the sheep entered through the ruined gate, and then laid some planks across it to prevent the flock from wandering away during the night. There were no wolves in the region, but once an animal had strayed during the night, and the boy had had to spend the entire next day searching for it. He swept the floor with his jacket and lay down, using the book he had just finished reading as a pillow. He told himself that he would have to start reading thicker books: they lasted longer, and made more comfortable pillows. It was still dark when he awoke, and, looking up, he could see the stars through the halfdestroyed roof. I wanted to sleep a little longer, he thought. He had had the same dream that night as a week ago, and once again he had awakened before it ended. He arose and, taking up his crook, began to awaken the sheep that still slept. He had noticed that, as soon as he awoke, most of his animals also began to stir. It was as if some mysterious energy bound his life to that of the sheep, with whom he had spent the past two years, leading them through the countryside in search of food and water. "They...

Another reason I came back to college is very personal. A few years back when I was in cosmetology school, I found out I was pregnant with my first child. After my daughter was born, it was pretty difficult juggling school and raising a child. But soon enough I overcame my obstacles and got my cosmetology license. Soon enough, I wanted to further my education, so I choose Strayer to achieve that. Someday I plan to show my daughter my accomplishments and hopefully influence her in continuing her education no matter what obstacle gets in her path. The last reason I chose to come back to school is an emotional one. I have a tough time reading,...

...Assisted Learning Imagine you had a computer with 10,000+ times the computing power than was necessary to put man on the moon, now imagine that computer easily fitting into your pants pocket. That is the current state of our technology. Yet even with our tremendous advancements people believe that having such easy access is detrimental to our society. I believe that the opposite is true, the Internet as a learning tool is of tremendous benefit. The Internet has an endless source of information but getting past all the headlines and top 10 lists can be a nuisance but well worth the perseverance. In 2012 author Nicholas Carr published the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” in which he argues that the structure of the Internet is resulting in shallower and scattered thought. Carr argues that the amount of information available on the web is causing him to “zip along the surface like a guy on a jet ski” (Carr 2). Carr believes that because information is so vast and quick to access it is rewiring his brain for decreased contemplation. While it may be true that skimming information is the easiest option, I believe that delving into a subject is just as simple. Recently I was interested in learning a programming language and was introduced to the website codeacademy.com where users can take a free guided online class to learn the basics of a language. I finished the class and had a much better understanding of coding than I had prior. But I realized that what I learned was just...

Objectives of the Team To meet M3 To Meet P6 Team Performance | Team Activity | Effective | * performance indicators, | My team’s task was to create 4 brand extensions for a selected programme, strictly come dancing. We also had to plan an event to promote the new brand extensions but we were given a strict budget for the venue, the food and entertainment for the guest. Finally once we had done all of that we had to put all the work we had done a PowerPoint presentation, which had to present to some judges and an audience. | The team was very effective due to the fact that we also listen to each other and accepted the ideas of individuals within our groups in order to make they didn’t feel left. The ideas began to follow through, so when it comes to creating our brand extensions for strictly come dancing we had no difficulties at all. The team was also effective because some people in our team have not achieved and met p6, so by come completing the task we meet M3 which the reason we when to the BBC and the people I our groups who never meet and achieved p6 met by the end of the task. | Target setting, | My team only set one target and that was to complete all tasks within the set time, so that we could have time to go over our presentation and perfect any defaults. | The team was ineffective in this...

...Erica Gakstatter Professor Peterson English 112 21 September, 2011 My Dream “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe” Anatole France. Growing up I’ve always wanted to live on a beach. Always watching movies and seeing pictures made me want that dream even more. To make this dream come true, I know I have a great deal of work ahead of me. Create a goal to get through school and get a good job, saving up all the money I can, to pay for this place that I want to call my dream home. While making my way through high school I would always tell my parents how I wanted a beautiful home on a beach. They always told me to go get good grades and go to school to get a good job. Through high school I really struggled to get the grades that I knew would get me somewhere. When I realized that I could push myself to do better in school I took advantage of that opportunity. I went out and found tutors and got the help that I needed to raise my grades. As time went on I kept succeeding and I was getting A’s and B’s instead of C’s and D’s. Even if my dream of living on a beach didn’t come true I would still want to look back and know that I did well in school. After getting accepted into college, I’ve never felt so accomplished. Cause I knew that I was actually going somewhere in life. Deciding what I wanted to study was a big obstacle. Following a bunch of different research I decided what I was going to study. I decided to study...

...Winning the Lottery Winning or earning a substantial amount of money shouldn't only be used in luxury or having a high lifestyle. In the downfall of our long lasting recession that has lasted quite a while, really ought to be thought about considerably. I would choose to share it, as much as possible. So, for the lottery to even exist could be life changing to many people if anyone ever won. ever won. So, should we play the lottery? Should you be able to make a difference? Also, is the lottery really a dream come true? This is my take on what I could do and what should be done if I or someone should win the lottery. First of all, should we play the lottery? Money literally does grow on trees, but not exactly the way we wish it to. My mother used to obsess about the lottery spending tons of money on tickets. So, when I was real little I used to tell my mother all the time that when I grow up, I'm going to win the lottery and I'm going to buy a ton of homes like Jennifer Anniston. If she could do it, then so could I. As I grew older and watched my mother spend so much money on the lottery it somewhat changed what I thought about the lottery. I felt so terrible all the time because she would go into depression from spending all her money and couldn't figure out how to pay the bills. I've asked her “what are you going to buy if you ever win?” When asked, she could never think of one thing, but of course pay off her bills. I always told her; “if you didn't spend as much money...

...Ellason Boyle ENG 3U Mr. Zago January 9 2012 Self-Discovery in ‘She’s Come Undone’ Self-discovery, by definition, is the act or process of achieving understanding or knowledge of oneself or, in other words, identifying your own individuality. To understand who you are is extremely important if one wants to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment. In reality, people struggle every day to uncover who they really are and for Ms. Price, this was no exception. Her life was not always stable which made her journey to discover herself extremely strenuous. Dolores Price, the main character in ‘She’s Come Undone’ by Wally Lamb, had many traumatic events that occurred during her life that persuaded her to discover who her inner self was as well as therapy and significant symbols that meant a lot to her through her journey. To begin with, Dolores Price had to overcome many traumatic and negative memorable events that life supplied her with. The thing that started it all was the miscarriage of her little brother Anthony and the separation of her mother and father. She, like a normal child caught in the middle of their parent’s separation, feels like the separation was her fault and that she could have prevented it. Another scarring event that she was forced to endure was being raped by her neighbour, Jack Speight, in eighth grade. After being raped Rita, Jack’s wife, has a miscarriage and Dolores, again, thinks that this is her fault. These lead to the other major problems...
