Communication Channel Scenarios
The content of this paper will provide details involving communication channel scenarios, which channel is appropriate for the scene, and why the channel was chosen to convey the message. First, communication is a two-way process of reaching an understanding by which information is exchanged either informally or formally by means of a common system of signs, symbols, and behavior.
Scenario 1
In scene one the vice president of operations has assigned the marketing manager the task of developing a marketing strategy introducing a new beverage that has done well in the United States for the global market. The marketing managers’ team has one week to develop a strategy.
The most effective channel of communication for this scenario would be a downward channel of communication because the marketing manager will be communicating an assigned goal, instructions, a deadline, and details to the team members. The most effective medium that would be most engaging would be the use of electronic communication via video conference because the task has to be completed in one week, is a short notice meeting, and the team members may not be available at such short notice. A face-to-face, upward channel of communication would be appropriate when the marketing manager performs the marketing strategy presentation for the vice president of operations, as this channel will provide an outlet for questions and an interactive meeting. According to Hoch, Kunreuther, and Guenther (2001), the upward communication channel is appropriate because the communication is conveyed to a higher level within the organization to provide feedback, and keep the higher level executive informed of the progress that has been made.
