Electronic Medical Records (EMR) “is records about patient care that are kept on a computer rather than on paper, the traditional medium for patient histories. These records can include extensive information about a patient's general health, current and past illnesses and medical conditions, diagnostic test results and treatments and medications prescribed. Often, electronic medical records also include an application for prescribing and ordering medication.” (E How Health, 1999-2012)
The history of EMR’S begin in the 1960’s when a doctor named Lawrence L Weed was the first to think of a theory to program and restructure patients medical records for the doctors use furthering to improve patient care. In 1967 Dr. Weed worked on a program called PROMIS (Problem Oriented Medical Information System) this was the basis to get the automated Electronic Medical Records started. This aspiration was to develop a system so that would administer timely and chronological patient information to the doctor to quickly collected information of the patient for medical purposes. During the 1970’s and 1980’s is when the Electronic Medical Records really begin to be used by hospitals by the 1990’s arrived with the progression of computers and diagnostic software Electronic Medical Records are used more increasingly. In today’s technology world time is precious we have to adjust our career with our personal life. Now a day’s people want the quickest way to communicate so they can continue on with whatever is going on in their lives. With people visiting doctor’s yearly Electronic Medical Records is the best communication for patients and doctors. Electronic Medical Records stores patient’s information ranging from medical history (which can include family), medications used, allergies, surgeries, lab work and doctors notes from each visit. This is stored onto the computer in the doctor’s office for quick access.
Patient-Clinician Communication
“EMRs facilitated communication with patients in a variety of ways. In general, immediate access to EMR data enabled them to focus on the patient rather than gathering information from a variety of paper sources during visits. As one physician explained, because we do not have to call down the hall for a lab or test result, we spend more quality time [with the patient] in a more context-rich way. “ Similarly, because staff can pose questions to the physicians via the EMR’s electronic instant messaging (IM) function, rather than opening the exam room door, doctor-patient communication during a visit can continue uninterrupted, at least physically. “

“Ease of access to information also enriched patient education during visits. For example, clinicians could pull up information from the patient’s record, such as the problem list, medication list and care plan, or educational information from the Internet to review on screen with patients and family members during the visit. Some respondents reported sharing copies of that information with the patient/family to reinforce their discussion. “(Electronic Medical Records and Communication with Patients and Other Clinicians: Are We Talking Less?, 2012)

There are many advantages and disadvantages of Electronic Medical Records. Some advantages of EMR’S are patient’s safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness and security. Some disadvantages of EMR’s include concerns about patient confidentiality and illegal access to records, the huge capital investment for computer hardware, and system maintenance. (Silverman)
Many researchers suggest that consumers have noticed the possible benefits of EMR’s and believe that this could create opportunities for health providers and health plans to the necessary steps toward achieving EMR’s,” said Lewis Redd. “This attention is new and we see the possible outcome for an environment where consumers will begin to give more influence over the rate at which these systems are recognized across the health care arena. (Redd, 1996-2012)

EMR’s technology’s financial impact on organizations whether it be long or short its showing that many Healthcare Organizations are willing to get help from legal or business counsel to have a better understanding of the Healthcare Laws involvement, they are also sending their employees to classes that include seminars and web casting to further understand the laws and its impact.
EMR’s improvements that could still be made in the future are in my opinion to make sure that patient medical history is kept secure. Make sure that all staff members are thoroughly taught about the HIPPA standards and if they need a refresher course that it are available to them. When a patient comes make sure that they verify their name, address, social security number and even their telephone number so that no information will be given out to the wrong patient.
