Communication and Collaboration Communication and Collaboration among individuals of different learning styles and personalities is important not only in a professional environment but also in society. Learning styles differ from person to person. Different learning styles are often the result among individuals with different types of each.
Different personality styles thrown together can either clash or compliment. Personality is the first thing one person notices about another when communicating with them and learning the different strengths about each personality type can help to improve communication and collaboration. There are three different learning and personality styles that I will talk about.
Verbal/Linguistic
“Verbal Linguistic is the ability to communicate through language, listening, reading, writing, and speaking” (Keys to College Studying Chapt. 2). In order to communicate and collaborate effectively each team member must use their strengths to make up for another’s weakness. Those with Verbal Linguistic strengths can effectively communicate in writing and can also use persuasion. Teachers can also help their students by having them keep journals, play word games, and use discussion in the class room.
Interpersonal
“Interpersonal is the ability to relate to others, noticing their moods, motivations, feelings, social activity, cooperative learning, and teamwork” (Keys to College Studying Chapt.2). People with
Interpersonal strengths are great at keeping the group running smoothly and they can communicate verbally. Teachers can help these students encourage the growth of Interpersonal intelligence by designing lessons that include group work and by planning cooperative learning activities.
Bodily/Kinesthetic
“Bodily/Kinesthetic is the ability to use physical body skillfully and to take in knowledge through bodily sensation, hands on, and coordination” (Keys to College Studying Chapt. 2). People with this strength love to move around, touch the people they are talking to, and to act things out. They enjoy all types of sports and physical activities. Teachers can encourage their students by using touching, feeling, movements, improvisation, facial expressions, and more hands on learning activities.
Thinker
A thinker personality has the ability to think outside the box providing original solutions that other personality types may not think of. They do best in brainstorming ideas and carrying out logical tasks. They like to work independently find new approaches to issues, use charts. They also contribute in problem solving, realism, and precision and they offer mathematical, technical, scientific and analytic thinking. They are the brains of the operation.
Giver
A giver personality is very sociable and contributes honesty, passion, adaptability, negotiating, and intermediary skills, caring, giving, and can assist in creating a more harmonious environment. They do best in academic challenges when studying and developing relationships with others or when allowed to teach others. They help find ways in to express thoughts and feelings clearly and honestly and they put energy into most important relationships. They are the helpers of the team by helping everyone succeed and teaching material when needed.
Organizer
An organizer personality contributes discipline, planning, practicality, predictability, organization, structure, dependability, and administrative skills. They do best in structured settings with clear expectations and excels when in charge of planning and giving instructions to other students. They organize material; keep a schedule of due dates and assignments. They are the organizer of the team by planning and keeping things in order.
Conclusion
If every member of a team used the same learning styles and have the same personalities, the team would suffer. A more diverse group of individuals will make the team better as a whole. Each learning style brings different strengths in order to cancel out weaknesses. Personality styles do the same. Having a diverse team of different learning styles and personalities can sometimes cause conflict, but by knowing the characteristics of those on a team is easier to understand teammates and create a communication and collaboration strategy that works for everyone.
