Compare and Contrast Two of the Great Educators

Compare and Contrast Two Great Educators In todays society we try to instill in others the importance of a good education and how it builds self-esteem. I am a firm believer that one’s development is often dictated by a sound education, combined with an environment that encourages and support educational growth. In this paper I will briefly compare two of the great educators, Paulo Freire and William Brickman. Discuss their contribution, similarities and differences and factors impacting their success.
Paulo Freire Contribution
Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Freire’s view of education came about when his family had to move from their current status of living to a status of poverty due to the market crash of 1929. Freire learned through education all things are possible; how you live, where you live and your societal status. By having the opportunity to grow up in poverty Freire got to see how those who were educated suppressed those who were not. He saw how education was used as a mechanism to control the weak minded, where as the oppressed lives with one understanding and one reality. In order for change to take place in the oppressed they must discover alternatives. It is only then they can begin to transform their own world and experiences (Flanagan, 2005). William Brickman Contribution
William Brickman found his calling in education as he traveled the United States and overseas. His world travels afforded him the opportunity to engage with and see other educators in work. He also noticed the transfer of knowledge was locked within the borders of each country. This is where the field of comparative and international education came about, breaking the barriers that stiffen the transfer on knowledge across boundaries to where knowledge is shared independently and available to all. Brickman’s pursuit for academic freedom saw the establishment and realization of real comparative education from both a historical and future point of view (Silova & Brehm, 2010).
Resistance Encountered
Brickman was afraid that the comparative and international education model would take a back seat to science and statistic. And that the comparative and international education model would lend itself to the softer side of education touring and exchange information.
Freire too, had challenges it was said, that all education system around the world was not the same. Meaning the oppressor and the oppressed may not be the same in all education systems and that his system would not be applicable in developing nations (Street, 1984).
Similarities
They both developed their work after being placed in a poverty stricken environment where they learned the importance of education through the lens of the less fortunate. They also realized that education should be available shared by all and taught with shared life experiences. They both are reveled for the work they have accomplished in the field of education.
Differences. Freire viewed education through the lens of poverty, the oppressor and the oppressed. Brickman viewed education through multiple lenses poverty, transfer of knowledge and ideas and different cultures.
What factors may have impacted their success. Paulo Freire and William Brickman early childhood could be viewed as an impact to their success if there hadn’t been a change in their lifestyle. By growing up and see the struggle of others through their life experiences justified the need for change in the education system.
Conclusion
Paulo Freire thought of his work in education as a collaborative effort between teacher and learner working together. Brickman presents his work in education through the transfer of knowledge and ideas across all boundaries.
