Comparing Piaget's Fourth And Final Stages

Piaget’s fourth and final stages is formal operations. This is generally occurs between High school and College. Formal operations are mental tasks involving abstract thinking and coordination of a number of variables. During this stage, the focus of thinking shifts from what is to what might be. “The formal operational thinker can consider a hypothetical situation and reason deductively. Formal operations also include inductive reasoning or use specific observations to identify general principles.” (Woolfolk pg. 38) During this stage adolescents develop the assumption that everyone else shares ones thoughts, feelings, and concerns.

Lev Semenovich Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist whose work began when he was studying learning and development as a means of improving his own teaching effectiveness, was a major spokesperson for the sociocultural theory of development. “Vygotsky believed that human activities take place in cultural settings and cannot be understood apart from these settings.” (Woolfolk Pg.42) In Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory he emphasizes the importance of cooperative dialogues between children and more knowledgeable members of society. According to Vygotsky, social interaction is the basic building block and foundation of all learning. “Vygotsky assumed that every function in a child’s cu cultural development appears twice: first, on the social level and later on the individual level: first between people then inside the child. Higher mental processes such as directing your own attention and thinking through problems, first are co-constructed during shared activities between the child and another person. Kohlberg’s (1984) cognitive– developmental approach to morality, find it wanting, and introduce a more pragmatic approach. They review research designed to evaluate Kohlberg’s model, describe how they revised the model to accommodate discrepant findings, and explain why they concluded that it is poorly equipped to account for the ways in which people make moral decisions in their everyday lives. To do so, I model how criticism continues to help me become a better writer. Earlier this year, for example, I shared a draft of one of my education feature articles, which included detailed feedback from an editor at a prominent media company. I asked my classes for advice on how to address several edits, dealing with sources, transitions, terminology, and structure. A few days later, I directed my budding writers to the much-improved final draft. This easy but worthwhile activity helped more of my students feel comfortable receiving criticism, and not view it as an affront. As a result, they improved their writing by taking the time and care to consider and respond to reader insight. I want my students to feel secure in the knowledge that nobody is beyond criticism (even their teacher), and that the bigger challenge is developing the good sense to acknowledge and successfully respond to feedback.
