Symbols are an essential in any type of writing, they are what makes the story come alive giving a double meaning to literature. The Dark Romantics Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne share a uniquely new type of writing style for the 1800s. They explored the dark side of humanity and wrote peculiar short stories full of Meaningful symbols. Edgar Allan Poe wrote “The Masque of the Red Death”, the short stories symbols help portray the theme that one cannot escape ones death. Correspondingly with Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story “The Minister's Black Veil”, also embodied symbols to help create the theme that everyone has a secret sin.
