...Critical reasoning – is both active and open to alternative points of view Passive reading/listening – writing down notes in lecture, you are passive in the sense that you don’t evaluate which statements to accept and which to reject and you don’t consider the speakers pattern of reasoning. Mere disagreement – is both critical and active but is not open to alternative views. You enter with your own established beliefs already in mind. Cooperative enterprise – two people have opposing views; one person sets his beliefs aside and help the other to strengthen his argument. Critical reasoning misconceptions – it’s too rigid or linear, it supposes that there is a right and wrong point of view. Argument – reasons for believing something or acting in a certain way If the author is attempting to state what has happened, or what is the case, or what something is like, he is engaged in descriptive writing, not argumentation If he is trying to prove something by giving reasons, he is engaged in argumentative writing. Diatribe is bitter and violent criticism or invective Examples of diatribe are often found in letters to the editor, in which people tend to give vent to their strong feelings instead of backing up their opinions with arguments. Consider the following (fictitious) letter: The politicians are at it again. An election coming up, and new spending just “happens” to be needed. Name your favourite issue, and you will find money for it—health care, education, social services...

...Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 1 Is NYC safe for the LGBT community? Jennifer M Wolfinger Critical Thinking Mrs. Dunston 2 Shady Corners, Is New York City dangerous for gays and lesbians, by Eliza Shapiro. This article is concerning the safety of the gay and lesbian community in New York City. The Stonewall INN, in 1969 gave birth to the gay-rights movement. There has been a disturbing rise in deadly anti-LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) hate crimes. Not only in New York City but all over the world. New York City was considered to be for a long time the safe haven for the gay community. The violence against the LGBT community has been on the rise for the past three years. These crimes have been becoming more and more violent. What are the issues and conclusions? The issue in this case is pretty obvious, the safety of the LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) communities. The article Shady Corners, just focuses on New York City. Throughout the United States there is a lot of hatred for the LGBT communities. With it being 2013, there still is too much discrimination for the LGBT. Not just in New York, but in all of the United States. When someone of the LGBT community get hurt or is killed by someone because of their choice of sexuality: is called a hate crime. In New York City there has been a “disturbing rise in deadly anti-LGBT hate crimes, both in New York City and nationally.” (Shady Corners, Eliza Shapiro) In 2011, the...

...Gender Specific Profanity Use INTRODUCTION In the course of linguistics there has always been an underlying notion that males have a broader range of profanities in their arsenal opposed to females that have a more narrow knowledge and also that as individuals their of swear words differ in the presence of the same and opposite sex. Rarely are men openly expressive terms such as ‘Slut’ or ‘Bitch’ within conversation with a woman and like-wise woman follow a similar conduct with men, but when they are in a same gendered group this friction is no longer present and the use of swear words in both genders increase. It is within this notion that this survey tries to capture the context that adolescent men and woman use profanities. This assignment uses a variety of acclaimed swear words that are used in modern society in different youthful groups within Melbourne, hopefully identifying a certain culture of ‘do’s and don’ts’ in assimilation to addressing the opposite and same sex. HYPOTHESIS That males with have a greater knowledge in identifying the various swear words presented whereas females will have a more narrow understanding of the words presented. Also, that males will generally use more swear word and in a more frequent manner then females. Also that both woman and men will swear more in a same gendered group then when they are in a mixed gendered group. BACKGROUND Sociolinguistic theory and empirical research gives great detail and insights into gender based usage...

Lake Athabasca experienced a 21.2 % decline in streamflow input between 1960 and 2010 that has led to a marked decline in its water levels in recent decades. A reassessment of trends in naturalized Lake Athabasca water levels shows insignificant changes from our previous findings reported in Rasouli et al. (2013), and hence our previous conclusions remain unchanged. The reply closes with...

...M & M’s Project Erica Warren Strayer University Abstract Over a short time frame of approximately 11 weeks, data was collected and recorded, on the number of candies of each color, within several bags of 1.69 ounces of plain M & M’s. The purpose of this experiment was to examine the packaging process for these plain M & M candies. A random sample on several bags of 1.69 ounces of M & M’s was collected and the population data was produced. The main focus of this project is the color proportions and the number of candies per bag. Calculations were done for the sample proportions, mean, and sample mean of the number of candies per bag. An excel spreadsheet was created to show a histogram for the number of candies as well as a descriptive statistics which summarized other information. Confidence intervals, for the proportion of each color as well as the mean number of candies, were constructed at 95%. Several hypotheses test, along with conclusions was calculated for the color proportions to test Master foods USA statements. The final step was to compare the red and brown candies and test the hypotheses to see if they were equal. This paper will introduce you to the methods that were used and the result for each part of the project. ...evidence did the authors find through their investigation?) 1.Children from recently divorced families believed it wasn't important to be married before having children whereas children in intact family felt the opposite. 2. Children from divorced families living with a single parent were more permissive about premarital intercourse. Conclusions: (What did the author(s) conclude? How was the research question/argument answered?) 1.Children of divorce showed a tendency to have more permissive attitudes and behaviors regarding premarital intercourse, than their counterparts in intact families. 2. These results are consistent with the predictions of the Hypothesis. What is the relevance of the conclusions to your research topic and/or to the other article that you’ve read for this review? (Answer the “so what?” question) The conclusion is relevant to my research because it examines the results of children's behaviours after parental divorce and how they differ from children in intact families. ...The aim of this case assignment is to analyze whether Brookes Brothers was the right base for entering the United States and if M&S paid reasonable price for Brookes Brothers? When Lord Rayner assumed the chairmanship of Marks&Spenser (M&S) in July 1984 one of the priorities that he outlined was: “the expansion of international business, including securing a foothold in two large international markets – The United States and the Far East.” By 1987 he didn’t reach this goal and in March 1987 sent a team of executives to the United States to study the clothing and food markets in order to determine whether M&S should move into United States or not and if so how. After receiving results of a broad study of American retailing it was determined that M&S had opportunities to move into US market but the firm lacked the merchandise and store style to compete successfully in the United Stated and it was decided to find a clothing and a food chains in order to develop a M&S-type store in the long run. After 7 months of study M&S came to conclusion that it should purchase Brooks Brothers, an upscale specialty clothing chain with a small joint venture in Japan. According to the case study it is difficult to assume whether the Brooks Brothers was the right base for entering the United States. On the one hand a company had a long-standing reputation of high-quality menswear, was oriented on upper-middle class businessmen and professionals and counted several presidents among its...

We also measure for the thickness of two umbrellas, choosing the green and maroon colour of umbrella by getting the average of each colour. Then compute for the average attenuation coefficient of UVA and UVB of green and also for the maroon. Conclusion In this activity, we conclude that UVB has a greater intensity rather than UVA. Also the hue of the fabric of umbrellas has greater effect, the lighter the shade of the fabric the lower it protect against UV radiation. Activity 2: Experimental e/m ratio = 1.64 × 1011c/kg Accepted value of e/m ratio = 1.76 × 1011 c/kg % error = 6.18 % Table 2: Charge to mass (e/m) ratio Accelerating Potential (v) | 188 | Radius of the Helmhoitz coil (a) | 0.15m | No. of turns on each Helmhoitz coil (N) | 130 | Permeability constant (µO) | 4 π ×10-7 | Current through the Helmhoitz coils (I) | 1.66 | Radius of the electron beam path (r) | 0.037 | In this activity, we determine the charge to mass (e/m) ratio of an electron using the e/m apparatus. ...thoughtful people. (Grant, 1988, p. 36) The importance of critical thinking is directly linked to the ability to make sound, informed decisions. The results of those decisions could have a major impact not just in regards to Homeland Security, but also in a person’s daily life. There are two major methodologies of critical thinking, both being unique and similar within their own right. From Dr. Richard Paul and Dr. Linda Elder there are the “Elements of Thought” which are eight. While from M. Neil Browne and Stuart M Keeley comes the “Right Questions” which are ten in number. In the “Elements of Thought” from Dr. Richard Paul and Dr. Linda Paul we find eight seemingly simple questions that should be asked in order to either make the best decision possible and/or to process the available information effectively. What is the author’s purpose? What is the author’s point of view? What assumptions are made? What are the implications? What evidence is provided? What are inferences or conclusions? What are the basic concepts? What are the key questions? (Elder & Paul, 2007) From these questions a reader, listener, or an analyst is given a template with which the critical thinking process should take place allowing the reader or listener to reach a higher level of comprehension and perhaps detecting any underlying or subliminal meanings, which may or not be present in the text or speech. Paul & Elder’s “elements” are quite simple to follow giving the analyst an unambiguous...
