The play Cosi is a comic play written by Australian playwright, Louis Nowra and is set in the early seventies in the midst of the Vietnam War era. The play focuses on the amateur production of the Mozart’s Opera Cosi Van Tutte. The protagonist, Lewis is a young inexeperienced university student who is given the task of directing the play as a part of a therapy program for the partients at the local insane asylum. Dramatic techniques are used constantly throughout the play to create re-occurring motifs impacting significantly on the themes of enlightenment, love and fidelity and madness, which are shown strongly throughout.

In Act One, scene one responders are introduced to the “burnt out theatre” where two unlikely worlds merge. The theater metaphorically represents the world outside; it reflects all the drama-taking place outside the asylum. This burnt out theater merges these two unlikely worlds together. The first, the outside world which Is set in the Vietnam War era, and then the patients world inside the asylum indicating madness. The use of these dramatic techniques creates re-occurring motifs playing a major role in the meaning and message that Louis Nowra is trying to portray.

In Act One, scene three the play begins in the darkness as Lewis shows his journey to enlightenment. Responders are shown “Lewis’ lack of control over the patients and his inability to fit in” he questions the “madness” he finds himself in.
The re-occurring motif of darkness is shown in “pitch black inside” this quote indicates that the characters metaphorically begin in the dark with ignorance and little understanding. Responders are told how “they fumble in the darkness for a light switch”. The use of this stage direction shows responders that although the characters begin lost in the darkness, light will give them hope that the journey to enlightenment will occur This scene is Lewis’ turning point as he lies to save the play and merges two unlikely worlds together. Lewis’ lies about how and why the toilets in the “burnt out theatre” were on fire helps both words of the asylum and the outside world merge. The contrast of the two worlds merging together significantly impacts on the themes of enlightenment, love and fidelity and madness.

In Act two, scene two and three, responders are shown how the play within a play helps Lewis charcter development and helps to gain understanding of the value of love. Lewis’ character development. “I’m not going to let them down. It’s about more important things like love and fidelity . . . without love the world wouldn’t mean much”. This quote shows how Lucy and Nick are a contrast to Roy who helps Lewis to understand the importance of love and he is now on his journey to enlightenment. Love and fidelity also play a major role in this play; in this stage direction “Lewis feels portrayed” foreshadows Lewis later being betrayed by his girlfriend Lucy and best mate Nick. Lewis’ view of love and fidelity is also shown through “Love is not so important nowadays” this quote reflects Lewis’ negative thoughts on love and fidelity. Responders are then shown how Lucy and Nick betrayed Lewis by sleeping together, this set the value of love and fidelity. Responders are then shown how Lewis defends the patients by hitting Nick when he insults the patients. “What are you on about – too much time with the loonies Lewis. They’re coming to take ma away, ha ha ha to the funny farm” Is said by Nick to Lewis. Nick represents society’s stereotype of mental patients (madness) and is contrasted is Lewis’ view of them as he now has learnt that stereotypes are false, this portrays his growth. This shows that Lewis now excepts the patients as they are “extradinary people, who have done extraordinary things”. Punching nick metaphorically shows rejection of his old superficial values and acceptance of love. This use of stereotyping the patients helps responders to clearly see Lewis’ growth impacting on the themes of enlightenment, love and fidelity and madness.

In Act two, scene four responders are shown the “play within a play”. “Happy as a man who calmly takes life as he finds it . . . and despite the tempests of life he will find serenity and peace”, these final words from “Cossi Van Tutte” reflect what Lewis has learnt as he becomes enlightened. He understands that life has obstacles and challenges “vicissitudes of life”. He grows to realize that life is filled with different emotions “weep, laugh” and they must be experienced in order the find peace and harmony with yourself. Nowra then shows the fine line between madness and sanity, the asylum has madness but so does the outside world, no one can tell who is mad. The use of these emotions helps Nowra to create significant motifs and ideas shared throughout the duration of the play. Lewis’ understanding of emotions being necessary replace his old views of politics.

The closing scene of the play uses forth wall; Lewis breaks the “forth wall” and joins the audience in describing what happens to the patients after the play. It also shows how their lives take on different obstacles to overcome, for some they are a lot tougher than others. We are then shown the stage direction “time to turn out the lights”, this has a circular structure from the opening scene where the charcters “fumble” for the lightswitch. Lewis is enlightened by this experience but ironically the patients return to the dark world of the asylum. Their “chink of daylight” I gone with Lewis’ exit.

Louis Nowra’s “play within a play” Cossi Van Tutte uses dramatic techniques of enlightenment, love and fidelity and madness to help responders to empathise and grow with the charcters. Although they are two very imcpmpatiable worlds they merge together significantly impacting on all themes and concerns used throughout the play

Cosi Novel

...Cosi “The Australian drama Cosi, and its themes, is a reflection of the characters’ immediate world, as well as the world at large. Explain this statement with reference to the text.” The Play Cosi, written by playwright Louis Nowra, is about members from a mental institution, who with the help of the protagonist Lewis are presenting an opera called ‘Cosi Fan Tutte.’ The opera tells the story of two officers, who pretend to leave for war to test the fidelity of their lovers. The themes of madness, attitude towards the mentally ill, transformations and growth and fidelity and love are portrayed through the conventions and techniques of symbolism, play within a play, setting and characters. Readers are positioned to respond to the immediate world and the world at large with complete madness, as it seems the world at large is a world apart from society. The play explores the theme of madness through the convention of setting. The idea of an inside world and outside world is shown through the symbolism and paranoia of society. The dark, derelict burnt out theatre is a metaphor for the world at large, and the drama that is enacted on its charred surface is a reflection of the larger dramas taking place outside. The outside world is noticed to have fear about the spread of communism, the mass casualties and the war crimes, for example the massacre of civilians, the torture of people and the rape. Readers respond to the absolute madness at times with confusion, as it’s hard...

World Commedia Dell Arte Day Analysis

...World Commedia dell' Arte Day (25/02/15) could not have been a more appropriate time to see The Royal Blood Bath. An Opera Regia performance from Commedia con Corinna, this time in collaboration with Werdna Theatre Productions. Corinna Di Niro or, more accurately, Dr. Corinna Di Niro, is the first person to gain a Ph.D. in Commedia dell’ Arte. Working alongside fellow actors Andrew Crupi, Mariana Dias & Jonny Lambert, they have formed a multi-cultural and talented foursome. My fellow drama students and ever so dramatic teacher watched the play at Concordia College in their ‘high class’ drama studio/stage. Dr. Di Niro stated the intention of preforming The Royal Blood Bath in Adelaide was to educate students and audience members on Opera Regia its self and also Commedia dell’ Arte as a whole. Her vast knowledge on the topic allows audience members to ask about anything and get a detailed answer. Another intention was to ‘promote’ Commedia dell’ Arte to keep it alive, vibrant and most importantly, relevant. The play is set in the Kingdome of Adelaide and is based around a royal family who were all on a murderous rampage. The play has everything from romance to tragic deaths, a true Opera Regia I must say. The play starts off on the funnier, more musical side of things with a hilarious ballade performed by the ever so talented Mr. Lambert. Incorporating modern themes but still keeping the classic Opera Regia style is what worked for me, not only could I relate to the modern aspects...

Annie Proulx Essay

...Academic essay on Annie Proulx's "Job Story" Choices are something we all make. Not necessarily important choices, but there will always be a time to make them. It's not always good choices, but they have to be made. There will always be consequences, whether it's bad or good. Throughout the story, Leeland Lee has to make a lot of choices. Where to live, where to work and when to work. All the different choices he made, put him in the position he is now. Leeland Lee is an awkward-looking young boy. His face is heavily boned, which he has gotten from his mom, his neck is quite thick and he has red-gold hair. His eyes are as pouchy as a middle-aged alcoholic. His nose is broad and lays close to his face. Lori Bovee is Leeland Lee's wife. She has an undistinguished oval face, and hair of medium length. Leeland Lee is the protagonist of the story, because he is the main character. I would say Leeland is a flat and static character as he is an endless optimist. He doesn't give up when it comes to finding a new job, and despite his wife dying he still gets a job at Unique Eats. The reason he is a static character is because he doesn't change at all. After getting several different jobs he doesn't change anything, after his mom and wife dies he doesn't change one single thing except the fact he isn't listening to the radio anymore, but since that have been an important factor of the story all along, it can also show a lot about how he has changed. The story starts November...

Essay 1

...An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from an author's personal[->0] point of view[->1]. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism[->2], political manifestos[->3], learned arguments[->4], observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article[->5] and a short story[->6]. Almost all modern essays are written in prose[->7], but works in verse[->8] have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope[->9]'s An Essay on Criticism[->10] and An Essay on Man[->11]). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke[->12]'s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding[->13] and Thomas Malthus[->14]'s An Essay on the Principle of Population[->15] are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education[->16]. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays[->17] are often used by universities[->18] in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...We all know love. We have all loved in some kind of way. We love our parents, significant others and even our friends. But we can also love other things like animals or material things. But what is the difference between loving and liking? And is it better not to love and feel pain or to love and be hurt in the progress? Jonathan Franzen seeks to answer these questions in his essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts”. The essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is, as mentioned, written by Jonathan Franzen and published in The New York Times, May 28, 2011. Jonathan Franzen is born in 1959, and he is an acclaimed American novelist and essayist. The essay is based on the commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College in Ohio, USA. “Our technology has become extremely adept in creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly. (…)” As Franzen claims in his essay, many people can feel like they love their technological object. It gives them a satisfaction, which human interaction maybe wouldn’t. Franzen however thinks, that people in general don’t love material things: they like them. There is a major difference between loving and liking – even though it might appear small. “Liking, in general, is commercial culture’s substitute for loving.” Products are made to be likeable, but if that concept in transferred to a person, you would instantly see...

Reaction - Salvation

...Reaction – “Salvation” The nonfiction short essay “Salvation” written by Langston Hughes in 1940, presents a theme on the literal and often manipulated perception of children. Hughes narrates the essay as he recounts his disappointing attempt at salvation. Hughes aunt told him that when she was saved by Jesus she saw a light, and felt something happen within herself. As children will do, Hughes took her story literally and was heartbroken as he sat in front of the church and watched other children “saved” while he was not. He believed that Jesus must not want him because he did not see or feel anything. In the end, Hughes is forced to lie about accepting Jesus and in turn rejects the Christian faith all together. I related to Hughes story on many accounts. I am a mother of three young children who perceive everything in life literally, and as a young girl I was raised in a very religious environment. I could visualize and almost feel Hughes devastation as he sat at the front of the church crushed by the thoughts of God not wanting him. “Still I kept waiting to see Jesus” (Barnet, Cain, & Burto, 2011, pp. 351). One of the churches that my family attended for a short time during my childhood practiced speaking in tongs. I specifically remember feeling just like Hughes during a service when other children were speaking in unnatural languages perceived to be sent from God himself. I could not understand why I was not chosen to talk for God and intern was hurt and...

No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch

...Dog Food Fried, Flipped and Devoured Eating dog food may not be seen as the easiest thing to stomach because the smell, texture and by-products found within the mixture are thought of as awful and revolting. In Ann Hodgman’s “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch”, although the title may suggest otherwise, different types of dog food are discussed. In this essay, Hodgman aims to inform her readers about the inequality in different types of dog food, as well as to entertain and amuse. Hodgman is writing to a broad audience, one of dog lovers and owners, as well as those that may be curious as to what is really in dog food, or more generally the packaging and processing of mass-produced food of any kind. Language, description and humor are techniques Hodgman skillfully uses to create a strong, convincing essay. Within this essay, Hodgman continually uses diction and syntax that a diverse audience can understand and relate to. In the beginning, the reader feels repulsed by what is written. However, through a light tone of voice and sentence structure, the levity of the experiences and feelings occurring throughout the experiment is conveyed. The personal anecdotes and thoughts make the tone feel less formal and much more story-like. In this way, Hodgman produces a piece that connects the information and readers Shortly after capturing interest through stating questions, Hodgman begins using large amounts of description. Each type of dog food is explained and illustrated so well that...
