Cracked Ceiling

October 2013 was a tumultuous time in our political system’s history, the House of Representatives and the Senate could not agree on raising the debt ceiling. So, effectively, the government came to a screeching halt. National parks were closed and government employees stopped getting paychecks. The Democrats controlled the Senate and wanted to fund the Affordable Care Act and the Republicans controlled the House of Representatives and wanted to defund the Affordable Care Act basically making the bill useless. While the government was in free fall, one group of Senators put aside partisan issues and worked together to build the framework of a debt bill. This group was a group of women, spearheaded by Susan Collins, a Republican Senator from …show more content…
Most citizens will remember the 2008 Presidential Campaign as being groundbreaking for the first time in history we had an African American running for president. Most citizens will also remember that this was the first time a Republican woman, Sarah Palin, ran for Vice President. In the book, “Notes from the Cracked Ceiling,” author Anne E. Kornblut, argues that the Alaskan Governor, appealed to both genders. With women, “she was...just an average ‘hockey mom’ who joined the PTA, eventually running for city council...then mayor, then governor” (page 1324). While with men, she was “ a superhuman mother goddess…(who could) ‘field dress a moose’” (page 1497). While candidates running for office need to appeal to many different demographics, it almost seems as women are under a finer microscope than men. This past Presidential election against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton showed the major difference between how the different genders are reflected in the media. One incident that stands out is the Access Hollywood scandal with Trump. While his numbers dropped, it did not hurt his overall campaign. While Clinton was still answering for the sins of her husband’s past while he was president in the 1990s. In the book, “He Runs, She Runs, Why Gender Stereotypes Do Not Harm Women Candidates,” the author Deborah Jordan Brooks, argues that while there are stereotypes, there are stereotypes for both men …show more content…
In 1992, five women were elected into the Senate, this was duped “The Year of the Woman.” Out of 100 Senate seats, in 1992, five were occupied by women, and this was seen as a big deal. According to the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) 22 women occupy seats in the Senate. While this number is getting better, it is still on 22 percent of the Senate. While the population of the United States it is roughly 50 percent female and 50 percent male, shouldn’t these numbers not reflect the seats in not only the Senate but also the House of Representatives. Currently, only 19.3 percent of the House of Representatives are women. In the book, “More Women Can Run: Gender and Pathways to the State Legislation,” the authors, Susan J. Carroll and Kira Sanbonmatsu, argue that the pathway to the state legislation for women are rockier than mens, it is still doable but women need to be willing to run. “The greater experience levels among women compared with men raise the question of whether women need so much experience to reach the legislature. It may be that women acquire more experience in order to bolster their confidence” (page 35). It might be the question on how to encourage more women to run. For generations, most men were taught as boys that they could be doctors, lawyers, or even president. While most women were taught as girls

Programming Solutions

...task to undertake, but it is a task that must be accomplished in order to get certain things done. Many companies face problems in the IT field that can be solved through programming, from simple to very complex, these problems usually require some sort of input and variables in order to create a solution. One problem that I face in the workplace of construction, is trying to figure out the number of ceiling tiles we will need to fit the ceilings in most offices we build. The ceiling tiles are a certain size and cover large areas which can be a tedious task trying to count how many tiles it will take to fill in the ceiling. A programming solution could be very beneficial in an instance such as this because by creating inputs such as the size of the tiles and the area they need to cover, an output could be the number of tiles that will be needed and thus saving a large amount of time on counting every space they need to fill. This problem of having to determine the number of ceiling tiles it will take to cover the celling area is normally done by counting the spaces in the ceiling that need to be filled and then determining how many tiles will need to be purchased. By coming up with a program to solve this problem would no doubt save a lot of time and even money by not buying an excess amount and either throwing them away or storing them. I believe a simple program would be to have multiple inputs of the size of the tile and the area needing to be covered. By having these two...

Nepotism Is Bad

...Spain. However in countries where meritocracy is practiced, nepotism is generally considered a negative issue leading to corruption. Therefore Nepotism should be considered a negative issue/event in the business field; ethically, legally and discriminatively for those non-family member employees. Although Nepotism can assure a relative’s spot in the company or business, Nepotism suggests a form of inequality, presents legal issues and initiates family deterioration within the workplace. When nepotism occurs in the workplace, it affects the non-family member employees by suggesting a sense of inequality and minority towards employees. Jesse Jackson once said “We've removed the ceiling above our dreams. There are no more impossible dreams” he was referring to the “Glass Ceiling” for minorities, glass ceiling being an invisible barrier that makes it hard for minorities to overcome in this case to achieve higher goals and get promoted. Moreover in most cases nepotism creates immunity for family members; this obviously presents an unprotected working-environment for those non-family employees giving them more pressure and stress at work. Pressure may lead to an improvement of the output quality but efficiency will decrease. Finally due to nepotism, family workers have more privileges at the work place than non-family members workers, this situation motivates family members...

Trapped in Darkness, Lost in Thought

...It was the strangest thing I had ever seen, with tubes and wires hanging from the ceiling. The room was rather small, like the size of a normal classroom. The walls were pale gray and rusted out. It was dark, but there was a dim light from under the doorway across the room. I had been trapped in this room for hours, and I was chained to a chair. I couldn’t speak, for there was tape over my mouth. It was cold in the room, and every small breeze from under the door made me shiver. I was able to breath from my nose, and each breath made a small, foggy cloud from my nose, which looked like smoke in the darkness. I focused my eyes on the ceiling and discovered that the tubes were wrapped and connected by wires. The wires weren’t like “hanger” wires though. They were more like the wires you find inside your TV when it’s broken. The only sound I could hear was the ticking of a clock. I hadn’t noticed it when I had woken up in this odd place. It was once silent, but now the ticking was louder than before, as if it was in my head. “Tick-tock, tick-tock”, I repeated in my head. I shut my eyes, thinking that I was only in a dream. I sat there for minutes at a time, and when I opened my eyes the place was still the same. I started to worry, but I did not panic. I thought and thought and thought. “What should I do?” I whispered softly to myself. Suddenly, I heard foot steps from outside the door. They were slow, steady foot steps that made a slightly loud thud with every step taken....

Aston Blair Case

...Post negotiation Analysis of Les Florets Case This case particularly resonates with me because it highlights the problems that arise when two individuals have reference points which do not overlap. An impasse was reached between myself (VP of operations for Les Florets) and the Restaurant owner and this was primarily due to the fact that we both had reference points with a ceiling which we felt we could not exceed. Going into this negotiation as the VP of operations my goal was to primarily succeed in buying the restaurant. Prior to starting the negotiation, i identified several certain non monetary concessions that could be made to sweeten the deal such as paying a percentage of travel expenses, and also allowing the restaurant owner to remain as a manager provided he takes a shorter leave of absence (6 months), or retaining him as a paid consultant . I also identified my reservation price as being 160,000 Euros which was the maximum amount given to me by my bosses to offer to the restaurant owner. I established that it was important to discover why the owner wanted to sell as this would enable me to know what negotiation tactic to apply . At the beginning of the negotiations, I initially controlled negotiations, I said that Les Florets was more interested in keeping him as manager even when they bought the restaurant and immediately proposed if he would be interested in remaining as manager after he sold the place while pleasantly asking why he wanted to sell the restaurant...

...as well as attic bypasses. When dryer vents, bathroom fans or furnace exhaust ducts vent directly into an attic space, the problem is intensified. |[pic] | |Photos courtesy of Wiss, Janey, Elstner | |Associations Inc., Minneapolis. | |Photo 1: Brown stains on the underside of a | |ceiling in one townhouse | Although building codes recommend and require adequate attic ventilation above roof insulation to remove heated air and water vapor that has entered an attic from the surrounding air or a structure's occupied portion, the codes are not strictly adhered to during the design or construction phases. In addition, attic bypasses and openings in dryer vents and furnace ducts must be sealed to minimize moisture infiltration into an attic. This would prevent troublesome condensation within the attic space and on the roof deck's underside. Unfortunately, joints in vents and furnace ducts sometimes are not installed in an airtight manner. The primary signs of severe condensation in an attic space (as viewed from the living spaces) are water stains on ceilings, windows and walls. Such stains generally are the result of melting frost and/or icicles on a roof deck's underside. When staining because of melting frost and/or icicles occurs to a building's interior and damages interior finishes, prompt action is required to limit water damage. Water also can saturate insulation, reducing its...

...beauty of the garments. The surrounding windows are tinted, therefore you can see out but not in; this gives the shop an exclusive feeling, contributing to the individual style of the clothes and the high price tags. The building is the main feature of All Saints which sets it apart from other high street shops; it’s a converted bank, however it’s been renovated to look and feel like a church, this view is gained from entry as you step through the huge wooden doors. The ceilings are high, the arches, pillars and cornices are incredible, the tiled floor is amazing, and the centre of the store has a beautiful round ceiling mural with a balcony surrounding and a trio of gold, goblet type ornaments. The shop is very gothic in style and having every wall painted a dark grey colour contributes the styling of the clothes and the mood the shop puts you in; it’s like a fantasy world where the Victorian era meets modern Soho or downtown New York. Lighting in the store consists of spotlights on the ceiling pointing down at each fixture or display of clothing; this provides great contrast to the blandness of the colours and also highlights the garments beauty. The spotlights also contribute to the exclusive, almost celebrity feeling as they transform the store into a kind of set, depicting a story, as would be done in a movie. There is a hanging cruciform, created from very bright, stark naked bulbs. This creates a very artistic and creative view and a rock ‘n’ roll feel within...

Sory

..."Ugh!" Stephanie Dwyer slammed her apartment door and stomped her foot. "Creep!" A picture fell off the wall and shattered. Water logged, droplets dripped from her nose, her hair, and her eyelashes, pooling at her feet. She scowled. Her new high heels were utterly ruined. Courtney hid a chuckle behind her hand. Pointing the remote control at the television, she clicked off the sitcom she'd been watching. Her lips crooked into a half smirk. "This one turned into a jerk, too?" Stephanie dropped her purse onto the coffee table and flopped onto the couch. She kicked her shoes off, scaring the cat who ran into the other room. Staring at the ceiling, she said, "All men should crash and burn." "That good?" Courtney sat forward, flicking her long black hair behind her shoulders. "There's got to be a couple of good men out there. All we need is one good man each. Is that too much to ask?" Stephanie lifted pained eyes to her roommate and best friend. "I don't think there's two good guys in this whole universe. I give up. I've had it. I'm not kissing any more toads." Courtney looked thoughtful, tapping her chin with her forefinger. "Maybe we've been looking in the wrong universe." Her friend was losing it big time. "What are you talking about?" Handsome Patrick had seemed so perfect, so wonderful. Until she'd caught him with Alyssa tonight, telling her the moon and stars shone only for her, that they were soulmates - the same pathetic lines...

Ungrateful Slob: The Writings Of Brad Manning

...Brad Manning is an Ungrateful Slob I typically make every effort to avoid “heartwarming” stories about children recounting how magnificent their fathers were. This becomes increasingly difficult when you stroll into English class and your professor tells you to sit yourself down and read a couple of “look at my awesome dad” stories. Despite my initial disdain for the topic, I whipped out my book, determined not to approach the assignment with my usual jaded mindset. That being said, I still loathed the reading. Brad Manning exhibits a somewhat disturbing fetish for the hairy arms of a middle-aged man. Halfway through the essay I began to beg Manning to please not say the word “arm” again, lest I begin to pull out my hair in frustration. Rather than heed my pleas, Manning chose to use the word “arm” another SEVENTY THREE times, and I am fairly certain I now sport a bald spot behind my left ear. Manning seems to begrudge his father for expressing love physically. Manning talks about the time his father spent with him, playing games and arm wrestling, but writes off all this attention as a shortcoming on his father’s part. Manning is quick to dismiss his father’s lacrosse coaching but laments that his father never signed his birthday cards. I found Manning’s scornful attitude to be infuriating. There are kids who spend years yearning for five minutes of attention from their fathers, yet manning has such a surplus of father-son bonding time, he brushes it off as though it was...

Women Being Stuck

...Workplace: The Glass Ceiling If glass ceilings existed, they would allow people to see through to the world above them. Because glass is clear, those existing under such a ceiling might not, at first, even notice that a barrier was in place which separated them from higher levels. Yet if they tried to pass through, they would quickly learn that the ceiling prevented them from doing that. But lets face it. Women have known about glass ceilings in the executive suite and throughout all levels of the workforce long before the Wall Street Journal highlighted the problem in March 1986. It was coined in the media to describe what happens to women when they are denied opportunity to the upper levels of executive management. Thousands of qualified women and minority men are routinely denied top level jobs in corporate America. But instead of calling it racism, sexism, or xenophobia, we call it the "glass ceiling." For people confronting these barriers, it is discrimination - plain and simple. Glass ceiling" is a term that describes the artificial plateau, beyond which women and other minorities are denied the opportunity to advance to upper levels of executive management in corporate America (Castro, 1997). It has become a routine practice to deny thousands of qualified women the top level jobs, merited by their performance. The "glass ceiling" barriers toward women are nothing but an insidious form of sex discrimination, in violation of law(Feldman, 1997). Glass ceiling barriers exist...
