...Crane operating is one of the high up, overlooked, passed by, and amazing jobs in America. Just look where technology is now, it's pretty far, but can it replace a crane operator's human skills. Operating a crane requires good hand eye coordination, experience, safety precautions, and a knowledge of the crane limitations. The average age for this job is about 43, but most operators are older and are ready to retire. America is big, but its buildings are as well. They need maintenance that just could not be done without cranes. This is the ideal job for me because it's wage is high enough to provide for me, and the job comes with good financial benefits. Crane operators usually only operate one crane. There are mechanical, lattice boom cranes...

...Problem 1 (a) Why is the receiving staff in a typical warehouse much smaller than the staff of order-pickers? The receiving staff in a typical warehouse is much smaller than the staff of order pickers because restockers move larger quantities of SKUs, so a few receivers can keep many pickers supplied. A rule of thumb is that there should be one receiver for every five order pickers. Receivers usually handle products in larger units and order pickers handle products in smaller units. Order picking is significantly more labor intensive and resistant to automation. (b) Explain the difference between popularity and demand. Demand is considered the forecasted frequency of SKUs and popularity are the A items that have a high frequency and are picked and packaged often. For example, a Christmas related SKU will have a high demand during the holiday season but is certainly not popular other seasons. (c) What is “batch picking” ? Give a pro and a con of batch picking. Batch picking is when each worker retrieves many orders in one trip. An advantage of batch picking is that it is a way to increase the pick density. However, a disadvantage is that it requires that the items be sorted into orders while picking or somewhere else downstream. If they are sorted into orders during picking, pickers are slowed down because they must carry a container for each order and they must sort the items as they pick, which leads to time being wasted and can result in errors. If the...

...Warehouse Capacity Explained By Dave Piasecki © Copyright. Content on InventoryOps.com is copyright-protected and is not available for republication. Just about anyone who has responsible for the daily operations of a warehouse has either already experienced this situation (probably many times over) or likely will at some time in the future. You're struggling with a lack of warehouse space and your cries for help are pretty much ignored by those with the power to do something about it. And here's why. They (upper management, the owner(s), alien life forms, the usual "they" suspects) simply don't believe you. They've heard these complaints before and yet somehow you (or someone else in your shoes) managed to still get the job done. In addition, they may have occasionally walked down into the warehouse and observed empty space, maybe some partially empty shelves or completely empty pallet locations. "Plenty of space here, I don't know what the hell [INSERT YOUR NAME] is whining about". So either you are way too needy, or they don't understand warehouse capacity. While I won't completely dismiss the former, I think the latter is the more likely problem here. The problem is they are looking at "theoretical capacity" and you are dealing with "working capacity" (also called "effective capacity", "practical capacity", "rated capacity"). Theoretical Storage Capacity, Utilization, and Working Capacity. Theoretical capacity is easy to explain. It's the actual physical capacity...

...1. Introduction 2.1. Shipyard Shipyard is a facility for building, maintaining, and repairing ships and boats which can vary in size from personal sailing boats to large container ships designed to travel around the globe. Usually, a shipyard is located in an advantageous location along a large inland river, harbor, or shoreline, and some historic shipyards have operated in the same location for hundreds of years. Numerous people work in a shipyard, including naval architects, engineers, electricians, and an assortment of other skilled trades people who contribute to the construction of a ship. A shipyard also has a large amount of specialized equipment. At the most basic, a shipyard simply builds ships. However, most shipyards also maintain and repair ships that they have built, or ships caught in emergency situations which cannot return to their home shipyard 2.2. Competitiveness Competitiveness is defined by the productivity with which a nation utilizes its human, capital and natural resources. To understand competitiveness, the starting point must be a nation’s underlying sources of prosperity. A country’s standard of living is determined by the productivity of its economy, which is measured by the value of goods and services produced per unit of its resources. Productivity depends both on the value of a nation’s products and services – measured by the prices they can command in open markets – and by the efficiency with which they can be produced. Productivity...

...Lindsey Lebrick Bio 104 Dr. Stelzer Endangered Species in Wisconsin In previous years, the environment was looked at as an infinite resource. People did not realize their actions had negative effects on the environment and the species it inhabited. Such negative effects was pollution, which harmed animals and their living areas more than thought possible. It wasn’t until after events started happening, that people realized the harm they were inflicting. There were and still are many endangered species from this, however organizations and laws are now involved in the stabilization of these animals and prevention techniques. There are several endangered species in Wisconsin, however the first I am going to talk about is the Lycaeides Melissa samuelis, otherwise known as the Karner blue butterfly. These butterflies are federally endangered in the USA, at eleven sites at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin (Guiney, Androw and Wilder). The samuelis butterflies, both male and female have a wingspan of about one inch, but vary in appearance. The topside of the male is a silvery dark blue with black marks. The female is a grayish brown, especially on the outer portions of the wings. The females are wings are blue on the top and have irregular bands of orange crescents inside the narrow brown boarder. The underside of both sexes is gray with a continuous band of orange crescents along the edges of both wings and with scattered black spots circled with white. The Karner blue butterfly usually...

...Within a letter written to a friend Stephen Crane once wrote “ I always want to be unmistakeable”. (Greenfield 564) Crane wanted his short stories and poems to be read and understood by all men. Despite criticism Crane enjoyed writing, and later wrote to another friend “ my chiefest desire was to write plainly and unmistakeably so that all men (and some women) might read and understand” (Greenfield 562) Crane was a modern writer “He rejected both the theism and humanism of the nineteenth century”. (Canfield 391) Although Crane was not concerned with style or literary art, he became well known for his use of imagery. Crane became a notable success and was befriended and admired by some of the most important literary figures of his time, especially Hamlin Garland. Garland, a writer well known for his realistic stories served as a great influence and mentor in Crane's writings. It has been written that the key to Crane's success was that his imagery was more dreamlike than other writers, even more so than that of his mentor Hamlin Garland. It is because of this, that Crane has also been referred to as an impressionist. Impressionism is a literary term that focuses on subjective aspects of a scene as opposed to verifiable events. “The impressionist”- Stephen Crane was among the first to express in writing a new way of looking at the world”. (Canfield 387) Set in a small prairie town of Fort Romper Nebraska, “The Blue Hotel” is a great example of Crane's impressionistic views and...

...The stocking of lakes began in the late 1800s in the wilderness lakes of the western United States. Lake Trout was the most common fish stocked because of its popularity among sport fisherman. Until the 1960s, the environment and its ecosystems were not considered in the process of stocking a body of water. In the 60s, it became widely understood how fragile an ecosystem can be. Now, controversy surrounds the different methods of stocking fish as well as its jurisdiction under the law. In this investigation, fish stocking will be examined in its history, basics, ecological effects, and controversial areas. At the start of the 20th century sport fishing was gaining popularity. With the rise in fishing came the need for more fishing spots. To fulfill this demand, the process of stocking fish was used and became very prevalent. Will Colby,...

...The Knife That Killed Me The book starts off by Paul explaining how the knife can come close but that the math means that it can never reach him. He is sitting in the geography room listen to the teacher mumble on about fresh water lakes in America, and how his eyes are gazing so far away that you could think he is there. Then he feels something at the back of his hair, and he runs his fingers through his hair and finds that it is chewing gum. We get introduced to Miller, Roth and another person. Paul’s school was divided between two types of "gangs." One gang was run by the school's biggest bully, Roth. Roth found physical pain in fighting. Meanwhile, the other "gang" kept to themselves and were friends. Around the school they were known as the "freaks" since they were quiet and didn't start trouble, there leader Shane was one of my favourite characters. He cared about his group and wanted peace. Roth bullies Paul into making him send a package up to their rival school, and when Paul says that he will get hurt Roth says its fine and that he know he’s coming. He delivers the package and finds out that it is a dogs head. The people at that school declare war and demand a fight at 2 tomorrow. Roth accepts the fight and starts to make an attack plan. The 2 schools start fighting and Paul becomes overpower and pulls out his knife on a kid from the other school, he feels scared and turns and plunges the knife into the person behind him. It was Shane. Shane died in hospital. Paul...

...flowing from different directions come together to form the main river, which ultimately drains into a large water body such as a lake or a sea or an ocean. The area drained by a single river system is called a drainage basin. A closer observation on a map will indicate that any elevated area, such as a mountain or an upland, separates two drainage basins. Such an upland is known as a water divide (Figure 3.1). Apart from originating from the two major physiographic regions of India, the Himalayan and the Peninsular rivers are different from each other in many ways. Most of the Himalayan rivers are perennial. It means that they have water throughout the year. These rivers receive water from rain as well as from melted snow from the lofty mountains. The two major Himalayan rivers, the Indus and the Brahmaputra originate from the north of the mountain ranges. They have cut through the mountains making gorges. The Himalayan rivers have long courses from their source to the sea. They perform intensive erosional activity in their upper courses and carry huge loads of silt and sand. In the middle and the lower courses, these rivers form meanders, oxbow lakes, and many other depositional features in their Figure 3.1 : Water Divide The world’s largest drainage basin is of the Nile...

...Reid Haigler Professor Horton English 1213 2/4/13 The release of water from Canton Lake to replenish Oklahoma City’s drinking water has become a huge controversy in northwest Oklahoma. Oklahoma City officials claim that the city has waited as long as possible before pulling water from the lake; however, residents of Canton, Oklahoma don’t buy into this excuse. Is it really necessary to take 30,000 acre-feet of water from a lake that is already at a record low without much chance of recuperation? Besides the argument of whether or not Oklahoma City’s decision is warranted, the economy of the city of Canton as well as the lake’s land and wildlife habitat could experience detrimental losses. Oklahoma’s collective lakes have experienced an intense drought in the past two years. It is due to this drought that this issue has even come to light. Some claim Canton Lake was created as a reserve for Oklahoma City’s drinking water while others claim that it was created for flood control. As The Enid News and Eagle clarifies, “Kathy Carlson, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake manager, told the group the lake was built for flood control, water supply and irrigation. Later, secondary purposes were included that added wildlife habitat and recreation” (Barron). Regardless of why the lake was created, local residents believe the water release is unnecessary. Canton business owners, residents, and even surrounding towns argue that Oklahoma City residents and businesses have been...

...A glance at Cheney Lake Reservoir Ecosystem James Killion SCI/256 August 12, 2013 Mary Corrigan, Ph.D. As any lake Cheney Lake Reservoirs ecosystems begins with the sun, for without the sun there is no life. This is true because the sun is what provides the energy that is needed for the start of a food chain. At Cheney Lake Reservoir there is no difference than any other lake. Phytoplankton is the start food chain; it is mostly made of algae. Phytoplankton needs a sufficient amount of sunlight and temperature to grow, not only does it need sunlight it also requires phosphorous and nitrogen to flourish. In order to have an ecosystem that is productive and healthy there must a proper amount of phytoplankton at all times. If there is not enough phytoplankton there will not be enough to go around, if there is too much there not be enough light to support life. Phytoplankton is considered to be a producer. Zooplanktons are considered to be the animal in the free floating particles in the water. Their perpose is to eat algae, bacteria, and sometimes other zooplankton. Zooplanktons are considered to be a primary consumer in this food chain. Next to come is known as the secondary consumer....
